2014 Olympics Mens Free Skate

Agreed. This event could have been an epic showdown, instead it was just kind of sad. Nobody skates their best.
I wonder if the team event turned out to be a drawback this year, especially with only 5 days or so for the men to recover.

I doubt the team competition had an bearing on the way Hanyu and Patrick skated. They are athletes, one additional performance shouldn't have such an adverse effect on how they skate five days later.

In a way, I wish there wasn't this obsession over quads. I know that there is that feeling that the technical content needs to keep being pushed, but as long as the men feel they have to have quads and loaded technical content, it's going to be more and more difficult to have clean programs. And yes, as with all jumps, since the base value of a quad is higher, attempting a quad will get you more points even if you fall, as long as you get the revolutions in, which is totally confusing to the general public. I'm wondering also if there needs to be a shift in the scoring to penalize falls more.

Ah well - I've always had a secret wish that there would be jump-less programs for singles skaters, to just evaluate them on their skating skills. But that ain't gonna happen :-)

Yeah... Hanyu and Chan were so tentative.

Funny enough Abbott was the only skater to go clean tonight (looks like he intended to turn that 4T into a 3T).

Well, the media will be trashing everyone else for subpar performances while talking about how Abbott went off on a positive note (that is if he is indeed hanging his skates after this competition) so a nice change of pace for him!

Do you have to be so rude? He at least skated with conviction despite his mistakes and a poor Lp choreographed by Lori, and the jumps were wonderful when he nailed them. His jumps were fast, huge, great height, edge and flow, textbook perfect, he threw himself completely into them and his expressions says it all.

I want to ask a question: What were people expecting from Hanyu and Chan? Pristine clean programs? This WAS their M.O. for the past couple years. It's not like they did ANYTHING different than what they normally did during big competitions?

The only difference today was the fact that Ten looks like a gamer, and Frank Carroll KNOWS HOW TO TRAIN A SKATER TO PEAK AT THE RIGHT TIMES.

So, am I right in thinking if Fernandez had actually just thrown his second 4S and landed it on his butt, he probably would have ended up with the bronze? If so, why FS's CoP is even more ******-up than gymnastics's CoP...

I'm sure Hanyu's happy with the gold medal, but not the way he won it. I think he will be out to prove himself at World's in front of his home crowd...

:agree:
He's a perfectionist, he'll try his best at the WC. Hopefully the 4S will be perfect.

I'm sure Hanyu's happy with the gold medal, but not the way he won it. I think he will be out to prove himself at World's in front of his home crowd... and Chan will be thirsty for revenge... and maybe Fernandez, Reynolds, Ten, Takahashi, Machida, Kovtun et al will deliver. I'm thinking that's going to be a better competition than this...

Takahashi had a 4T<< and a 3A<. Yet again, 13th best TES score (he had the 12th best TES in the SP and came 4th), and he ended up 6th.

I have a question about the figure skating competitions. When the skater finishes their routine and takes a seat to be shown their scores, they usually sit with the coach. I've noticed some people sitting with two people, both are coaches? Like Michal Brezina of the Czech Republic for instance, he was sitting with Victor Petrenko but there also this woman sitting next to him. Who is she and what does she do if she isn't a coach?

Often times the choreographer gets to sit with the athlete as well.

And welcome to goldenskate, polymath :)

Well, that was a dog's breakfast!

I agree with Joannie 100%. He didn't win the silver, he lost the gold. My FB friends who are former comp skaters are very displeased with Patrick Chan who, apparently just said to the media, "well, it wasn't my worst skate ever, so that's a positive." Armchair athletes are all saying how wonderful it is because, well, it's a medal for CAN and we got none yesterday. I'm happy he still got on the podium for Canada but that skate was not good. Again, why on earth would an Olympic gold contender hire an Athur Murray Dance Instructor as his primary coach in an Olympic year? So he could date her daughter? He needed a solid technical coach behind him to fix that 3ax and the jump inconsistencies.

Chan tried to stay positive but apologized to Canada and was remorseful at the interview and seemed to try hard for composure on the podium. He is disappointed enough already without a Mama like you kicking him at this moment. What exactly have you done for him to expect so much from him like he owes you? This is a question I've wanted to ask all the Jeremy bashers since his Team skate. Olympic skating is the most unpredictable event full of drama so it should not be just another opportunity to pick on one's favourite target.

Why is the stadium so empty??! This is the olympics!! Didnt et that olympic feeling at all, what a total bummer comp

I think the extra skating in the team competition has to have had some impact on the quality of the skating for the top men. Having the men's competition so soon after the team skates gave those who skated in both no physical or psychological breather. Still, it is disappointing to have the top two medals decided by who fell the least, but the perfect, technically lights-out Olympic skate has not always happened, and there are even fewer chances of seeing such skates in this age of ever increasing emphasis on jump rotations and multi-revolution jumps. Just my two cents. Congratulations to all the medalists and the valiant veteran competitors who went out there one last time tonight.

That is correct, not because of CoP but because of the Zayak rule. A fall on a quad is about the same as a well-executed 4S, however, the fall on the 4S would have meant Fernandez' final 3S would have counted, giving him the bronze.

Don't forget, Yuzuru is not yet a World Champion but there's almost no doubt he will be in a few months :P

That's right. He had amazing long programs the last two years at the WC, but too many mistakes at the SP. This season, parisienne walkways looked fantastic and I don't see him having any mistakes at this program.

generally team leader from his/her own federation...but not all team leaders seat next to the skaters, only those who love to be on television

I'm so happy with this beautiful podium!!!! But it really breaks my heart to see Chan in second, when he's on, he's the best...but there were too many mistakes. I was moved the most by Denis' performance, so I'm SO glad he got the bronze!!!! he looks a lot like Yagudin when he skates:)
Yuzuru was good, but it was surely a disappointing performance for him...:((( There were no clean performances, but I guess it's also because the technical content nowadays is sooo demanding, it's so difficult to see clean programs with quads and all.
CONGRATS TO THE WINNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also, so sorry for Fernandez:(((

As I have said... REPEATEDLY: Jeremy doesn't owe us anything, he owes himself. He has rarely ever taken advantage of opportunities. He always seems to wilt when the pressure comes, which is disappointing considering his talent.

Chan deserves all of the criticism, it comes with being a favorite for gold, and for winning with sub-par performances.

A fall on a quad is about the same as a well-executed 3S

And... everyone is ok with this? Because it sounds incredibly stupid when you're new to the sport. And, sorry, but that is totally the CoP. The message here is "go for the big skill, even if you can't land it".

(btw I changed 4S to 3S because I figured that was a typo)

My two cents. This is the olympics, the biggest pressure cooker to an athlete, I for one could never even dream of doing what they do. I have 3 children, 2 of them are athletes the other prefers the arts. Anyway one is in hockey and one in gymnastics and I hope they are never judged the way some people are judging these young men. They have trained most of their young lives and sacraficed more than most of us can imagine and to get to the day they have been training for and it not go the way they had invisioned it is horrible.crushing. you know what they say those that can DO and those that cant BULLY. I hope the likes of all these skaters dont surf this site and see all the haters Instead I hope they can skate away and hold their heads high as they have done more than most of us can ever dream of.
