This interview explained her performance to me. She didn't have the enthusiasm. She couldn't wait to be done. She competed not because she was hungry but because she felt compelled to by her country. She just didn't BRING it tonight. Scott Hamilton, Johnny Weir, and Tara all pointed this out in their interviews with Bob Costas on Late Night tonight. She played it safe. She only went for six triples. Many of her landings were tight. She did not perform with abandon or passion or scintillating beauty. She just didn't. It was not her night. She can be astounding, as she was in Vancouver, but she simply wasn't in this long program. and the choreography was not top notch either.

Her performance was stellar and emotional, Whether you find an interview saying she's relieved it's over or not.

I am merely stating a fact, that Putin has nothing to do with the skaters' performances, why bring politics in? That is most unsporting. I just saw the NBC primetima and late night coverage of the ladies' free skate.. Even though I had seen it in the afternoon, I enjoyed this free skate in a more relaxed way (I was nail-biting along the way during the live broadcasting) and they showed as well Yuna's reaction when she left the Kiss and Cry and gosh, my heart went out to her as soon as a I saw her crying. For me she's been the epitomy of ladies' figure skating since she arrived to the senior scene back in the '06-'07 season (I shall never forget that gorgeous world recording short program to Tango de Roxanne in '07 worlds and since she came back from virtual retirement for last years worlds you could see she was done with her passion for the sport. Yes, she skated magnificently and but the look on her face then was that of relief rather than excitement. She had already won it all for her country and I still feel they put a lot of pressure on her young shoulders to carry on even when she was ready to move on.

Coming into this competition I felt she thought it was doable for her to walk away with another gold in similar fashion to last years world competition so she really didn't feel the need to up her technical content as she is capable of and, although she was close to flawless on both her programs, for the first time she showed nerves and the pressure of winning gold again got her as she seemed a little tight of her jumps. I don't think she realized how important her second straight gold medal was for her until she realized she had gotten silver, instead.

You are so right. I have posted several times about this flatness, this lack of passion and gusto and zest in Yuna's performance tonight. She did not compete out of love or out of hunger. She competed because of pressure from her fans/country. and you could see it. You could see the strain, the tightness, the lack of abandon and enthusiasm and joy. Kim was robbed and the Russians would have taken both gold and silver if they could have. Yulia received 135+ with THAT FS performance. That was like the worst case score people expected for Kim had she faltered. Makes you wonder where Yulia would be if she had not made those mistakes. Mind you, Yulia indeed received higher PCS than Mao for the FS.

Kim was robbed and the Russians would have taken both gold and silver if they could have. Yulia received 135+ with THAT FS performance. That was like the worst case score people expected for Kim had she faltered. Makes you wonder where Yulia would be if she had not made those mistakes. Mind you, Yulia indeed received higher PCS than Mao for the FS.

I didn't feel the emotion. You did. Many commentators have said they thought she was tight, tense, and not fully inhabiting the program. This doesn't take away from her greatness. But on this one night she skated conservatively, both in terms of her technical content and in terms of her emotional investment. and I feel for her. I think the interview helps us understand the pressure on her and the sense of tentativeness and lack of full engagement we felt.

Mao was the one who went all-out, full-out, and had the stellar emotional performance of the night.

Except for the badly executed combination jump, she skated extremely well, much better than say Hanyu or Chan in Men's. There was a lot of complexity in her program. So yes, I can see how she deserves a high score in the context of the games.

Now THAT is disgusting. Yulia's marks, especially her PCS, were more inflated than Adelinas in my mind. Mao should have won the free skate.

It wasn't just ONE post, but lots and lots of posts about Russia and how they don't deserve to host the games. Please refrain from personal attacks, at least I didn't say something like Julia = "Gumby", or other mean comments about skaters that have nothing to do with their skating. Or blame the entire game and judging when the results is not to my prior liking (me not having biased prior liking anyway, so the point is moot).

Nonsense. Every time Kim skates with her ethereal presence this is what she gets. She doesn't burst into joy like other skaters when she successfully lands a jump. Jumps are part of her choreography, the story she sells. Sure other skaters "exude" emotions and "joy" when they managed to not fall. I can see that. But Kim is beyond that - or at least she tries to be above that point. People criticize her because she is so otherworldly - same criticism she received after the Vancouver. Just because she is above other skaters doesn't mean she isn't human. Just because splatting isn't part of her normal routine it doesn't mean she has no emotion. I watched her SP many times and the emotions are all there.

Yes, as I said Sotnikova and Mao skated their best. Kim didn't. Caro was sexy, charming and sweet, but it's not better than the two, Obviously judges and many commentators, including American ones, agreed. Deal with it.
