Here you go...
Four years ago after Vancouver there were only a few people in the world who believed that TV and MT can become Olympic champions. It was more a desperate hope than a real belief. And of the fact that they will skate together no one knew except themselves.
In them believed a small group around Valentin Piseev. Two months before the Games in 2010 Piseev made a pact with his Ukrainian colleagues about the transfer of TV. The coach of MT Oleg Vassilev calls this pact "work crime". About Valentin Piseev's long career in the Russian Figure Skating ministry there are a lot of negatives to be said. But this might be the only case where the negatives said about him are not quite correct.
Not only now but even four years ago when it was announced that TV was going to skate with MT, that seemed like a very reasonable and obvious step. Tatiana had for long and faithfully served Ukraine with no hope for a big success. Her partner on and off-ice SM has not been born for high placement in world competitions. (there follow some more accolades about Tania)
The character and morals of TV were known as golden.
The matters were somewhat more complicated when it came to her future partner. MT came from Perm when he was 15. He was placed in the group of Tatiana Moskvina. But she was at the time quite busy with another pair. From there he went out with this review: "He is not without talent, but we have seen better."
In the next years he went from one group to another with partner MM. Before her he changed partners 5 times. All that frustrated and maddened him. It was good that life did not entirely consist of figure skating and in that period Max read books that a few athletes read, watched movies, that a few athletes watch. He liked the lyrics of "Krovostok"(?!I have no idea who they are?!). All in all, the professional world used to say that Max was playing the fool. Of course today, after the fact, we say quite different. While Max's colleagues and peers dutifully fulfilled requirements of teachers, he thought, developed, lived.
In 2006 after triumphantly finishing with Totmianina-Marinin, Oleg Vassilev decided to take on MM/MT. In his words the monthly salary of MT at that time was 2300 rubles (?!I think that must be very low, almost like a minimum wage in US). It has been proven previously that Vassilev was a strong coach. With an emphasis on "strong". A general. The problem was that Maxim was not a soldier. In US in the 70s young people with his temperament protested against the Vietnam war. But in USSR at the same time such used to be jailed.
In the pair MM/MT there were some successes, but the project in general was doomed. MT according to everybody always had his own opinion on everything starting from how to make 3L and finishing with the latest law in the parliament. Vassilev had the laurels of an Olympic champion and coach. There was also MM-a girl with a modest talent but with a self-awareness of a princess on a pea. It is a wonder we did not see drama after all in the kiss and cry area. We can imagine what the difference was for Vassilev after the timid and quiet Max Marinin to meet our wild Max.
In all, putting MT in the Sochi project was risky. In that respect the choice of a coach for the new pair increased the risk further. To give the new pair to the old general meant to return MT exactly there, from which he had fled - field drills and inspections.
At first the name of Ingo Steuer was mentioned. But after AS/RS decided to stay in the sport, that idea was discarded. There was Plan B. In hindsight we must acknowledge it was a stroke of genius.
Coach Nina Mozer arrived from Kiev to Moscow. Calm, but firm, well understanding her allotted place in the Russian system, but with dignity, she used to work with juniors. In regards to fame, it is a most thankless job. The most talented of the pupils would inevitably go to more famous coaches.
But there is one advantage in her line of work-you retain the ability to be merciful, to look on the student as a living creature, not the device on earning points, you can accept a person in all their complexity.
That was the main reason why everything came together for these people. All good things came to coincide for them in that moment of time and space. Nina Mozer, finally saw her students to the end, without having to hand them over to someone else. TV found herself a partner with whom she can really fly high. And MT was the main beneficiary from that union, for he needed it the most-he found warmth, acceptance, patience and tolerance from these women. In short - a family. It became clear that there is no dishonor even in marching in line when it is for the family cause.
You saw how Nina Mozer ran to the sobbing Max. She was worn out - what to do with herself if he did not reach his goal. Thank God he won his medal. I have never seen a coach embrace an Olympic champion in such a way-she celebrated his happiness, only his, not hers. Hers would be celebrated later. The group of TV MT NMozer is the highest refutation of the soviet sports postulate that there is no place for humanity in the big sport.
