Jason Brown

Jason is one of Amy Rosewater's "Seven Skating Storylines To Follow Seven Months After Sochi" (emphasis added below re major hair news ;)):

4) What’s next after Riverdance?

Jason Brown’s riveting performance to “Reel Around the Sun” from Riverdance at nationals generated millions of views on YouTube. The program, filled with intricate, crowd-pleasing footwork as well as dynamic triples and spins, was such a hit that Brown even performed it on the post-Sochi skating tour, Stars on Ice. Brown, who became so popular his ponytail acquired its own Twitter handle, now has the daunting task of providing fans with a sequel this season. No, he will not be performing to Irish dance again this season and he even plans to wear his hair down in his short program (Brown showed off a new do with two braids in the back at Champs Camp) but fans can expect the U.S. silver medalist to perform with the same attention to detail as he did in the past. His short program is a blues number and his free skate will be to “Tristan and Iseult,” which is based on a French medieval poem. “I love that people are like, ‘What’s going to be next?’” Brown said. “I want all of my programs to be in another category.” The programs once again are being choreographed by Rohene Ward and Brown said they might not be as fast-paced as Riverdance, but they that doesn’t mean they’re any easier. Further challenging himself this season, he hopes to add a quadruple jump to his arsenal. “I love the process,” Brown said. “Every year it’s different and every year I never do the same spins or combination of spins,” Brown said. “Now it’s time for me to figure out how I’m going to rock this one and hopefully make it memorable.”

If he is planning to wear his hair down, he should be running it with it down. . . i.e. at Glacial Falls. Honestly, he should be practicing always with it down. . . hair gets in the way. . . you have to learn to get used to dealing with it. I maintain we should have seen it first. . . err umm yeah. Maybe the lack of hair product weight will help him get more height in his jumps. As for the braided pig tails in back. . . i just. . . I think I am missing something here.

The funny thing is I was actually starting to wonder if he deliberately avoided photos of him getting out with it down. If he were to avoid ever being seen by fans with it down, he could in theory wear it down as a way to be slightly more incognito in his daily out and about activities. I suspect right now a lot fewer people would recognize him with it down than in the ponytail, so keeping that look quiet could have given him a hidden in plain sight disguise.

Rohene Ward, who choreographed Jason Brown’s masterful Riverdance–inspired free skate last season, said he already knows what music he wants the skater to use less than four years from now should Brown skate in South Korea. Of course, he wouldn’t reveal the music choice so we’ll just have to wait and see.

(Forgot to include this excerpt earlier -- from the same Amy Rosewater article.)

I hope someone asks him in a year if he still has the same music picked out.

(this is not meant snarky - I honestly think it would be neat to follow up, he may change his mind, he may not, it seems interesting to me)

This may have been posted earlier in this thread, but I can't go through 110 pages now, so

http://wgntv.com/2014/01/15/chicago-area-ice-skater-on-heading-to-olympics-shaggy-hair/

at around 7:09, Jason's hair. (I don't know how to freeze vids at a specific point). I just can't imagine anyone skating with that kind of hair loose, not even Jason. The judges are right, all you would see is flying hair.

Braids could be cool. But they could flap around too, more than a ponytail. Braids and suspenders; good thing I love Juke already.

I have seen that clip, but it is also the only time I have seen it. You can also frequently find just that part on youtube by searching for Jason Brown hair, at least I see it on occasion popping up.

I like the idea of him wearing it down in an exhibition if he is not private about it. (I still think the musical Hair has potential for him. . .but anyway). But I am not sure I think it is a good idea in competition. Especially, if he is keeping the pony for the long, then he has to keep it a certain minimum length. I wonder if he did it with it down at camp? And if the reaction was not horrible, maybe it will work better than we are picturing. And I do hope that he is practicing. . . A LOT . . . with his hair down. It is different, it feels different, it moves different, you sweat and feel different when dealing with nerves with it down. Hell I used to do small town dance performances and I made a point to practice with my hair how it would be worn day off. And I was not doing anything that I was likely to injury myself doing!

I am not a big fan of pig tails unless you are trying to be sexy, I can't think of any styles that would be professional for lack of a better word so I am not too optimistic on that path. The only idea on the braid was maybe one braid is used to cover/pretend to be the scrunchie/rubber band/pony tail/braid. Either that or small accent braids might work. But the way it is worded. . . I'm picturing more of a braided Baby Spice on ice.

The suspenders I'm ambivalent on. He has been seen in them before, I don't hate the way he looks in Fly Me to the Moon so I'm taking a wait and see approach. I just hope he does not do the belt and suspenders. . . i just don't really like that. I would not be surprised with something like that this year. Maybe with an untied tie pinned on and a kiss print on the color to look like after a long nights work or something.

Hm, well, maybe I'm just a nerd, but when I read "two braids in the back" I imagined something elvish Lord of the Rings style, and was immediately confused and thought "Why that style for Juke? why not that style for T&I?".

We'll just have to wait and see.

LOL, ok that would at least look nice, maybe the "in the back" is throwing me off. But yeah, that could work for T&I. In fact I think that was the plan. If he is wearing it down in the short, i.e. Juke, I would think that would mean the braids are for T&I. Or maybe he was just showing off a new hairstyle for fun at champs camp and it has nothing to do with his programs, maybe he just likes braids now.

I was successful! I manged to grab a clip of my kitty pawing at Jason's feet while he skates. I am very pleased with my cat and her taste in entertainment right now.

I am going to take this as a psychic kitty omen that his hair and suspenders will work well for the program. . . but I will have to get my cat's opinion when we see it.

Love it -- thanks for sharing! I look forward to updates throughout the season. :)

Or maybe Kori's daughters got to his hair...

I like that idea!

According to this icenetwork article about Champs Camp, Jason was the male model in the makeup seminar. Perhaps he was also the hair model and ended up with the braids.

Miner found the men's makeup seminar interesting, although he hasn't ever worn makeup and isn't sure he will.

"I don't know if I'll do it, but [Black] did a great job," he said. "She put makeup on Jason without anyone knowing it was makeup. It's not that I have a problem with guys wearing makeup -- plenty of guys do that -- but I don't want to look like I'm wearing it. She works with a lot of male professional athletes, and it was more likely to get me to try it than a lot of other attempts."

I wonder if Jason will be wearing makeup this season? :)

Do we know that he has not in past seasons???

ETA, my assumption is that Jason has worn makeup in the past -- and I am 100% fine with makeup for male skaters.

Do we know that he has not in past seasons???

It looks to me like he wore makeup at nationals for both programs, although it was pretty subtle. Take a look at the interview Tanith Belbin did with him after the short program. His neck is a slightly different color than his face, & he appears to have very light eyeshadow on. It's free on Ice Network - sorry can't figure out how to link. You can see something similar in Riverdance stills & kiss n cry though it's a bit harder to spot. He did some theatre in high school so it wouldnt be a huge leap.

I assume he has in the past and will continue to. It seems clear to me that Jason understands the concept of marketing yourself, so yes I think he is going to do all he can to try to look good, that includes makes up.

I have assumed for a long time the he at a minimum had some from of base/concealer/powder on at nationals because. . . well that is what it looks like to me, he was barely 19, plenty of people still have imperfect skin at that age, nothing wrong with making it less noticeable. But when it zooms in on him at the very start, and if you look for it, that is the conclusion i come to. Re-watching and analyzing compared to some of his other pics I think he has some eye make up going on as well. His lids looks to have some shadow on it, and overall his eyes look more opened up in pro pics than selfies. He lips are also damn perfectly shaped and colored if they don't have makeup on.

Realistically on the US nationals/worlds stage most people probably should be wearing some makeup, once you get into bright for TV theatrical lights. 99% if you wear it right, you are going to look better with makeup. Funny thing is, when you look better you get better shots taken, and those get used more. I would assume he has worn make in the past, and will continue to, as I assume most of the top skaters do, and I lean in the direction of thinking they should.

I share your assumptions, which are why I asked the question above. I do not frown upon makeup for male skaters -- hope my question did not give the false impression that I do.

I believe this is the one and I agree it is a good example.

As for the neck vs face. . . I think that may be a result of a tanning bed. He wears rather plunging necklines. . . the color is pretty uniform from ears to cleavage.

Long story short. Yes I do think he puts time and effort into looking good and being a complete and polished package.
