Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

Back to Yuzu’s teenager, he ever had a dream to open a professional skating school after retirement in order to cultivate young skaters, especial men skaters. Today I see Stephane Lambiel did the same thing in Switzerland. Maybe it is a good reference model to Yuzu.

They are all very responsible to the development of figure skating in their motherland. :agree:

Stephane Lambiel opens his school in the aim of cultivating future champion of Switzerland

news video: http://www.rts.ch/video/info/journa...istique-stephane-lambiel-ouvre-une-ecole.html

Former world champion Stephane Lambiel opened his school of figure skating on August. His goal is to train future champions and avoid Switzerland having the same predicament in Sochi Olympics that no representative at the upcoming Winter Olympics in four years.

Two-time world champion of men figure skating launches his training school in Champery. The new open school is built with high-level training courses in the aim of cultivating Swiss successors.

In Sochi Olympics, there is no Swiss figure skater to participate in the game. Stephane reacted this issue immediately. Since August, Stephane supervised the best promising Swiss players toward to top.

Stephane said:“ You can’t train with people who start skating and doing other triple jumps. There are structures in different clubs, but miss a professional structure. There is one team of regular skaters and another one that comes only on Wednesday afternoon. And then, we made one hour of technical training, one hour of expression on ice and an hour and half in fitness."

Stephanie invests of own funds in this private school, but it appeals to the participation of parents. “The skating is not a good sport market. I know the investment representing for a family.”

Here, 60 or 120 Swiss francs (francs) for the particular course and 180 francs for boot camp Wednesday.

Saw this recent interview of Yuzu about the choreography of his new LP. He seems to have considered playing Christine?? Could someone kindly translate?
http://ww2.sinaimg.cn/bmiddle/005yjB21jw1el1yppsw94j318g0xctj7.jpg

Quick translation:
I'm not really fixated on the Phantom. I thought Christine could be part of the performance, but it became just the Phantom.
--You wanted Christine in there too?
I thought it didn't need to be so much just Phantom, Phantom.
LOL. But it's the piece (song) I always wanted, so I want to really put my feelings into it.

Personal thoughts: Hanyu certainly doesn't mind crossing the gender lines in his performances, as was seen in his R&J etc. So, I guess going for a purely masculine role was not what he had in mind. I can't wait to see this.

Thanks for the translation!. To be honest I'm glad he just sticked with Phantom.

【article】Why Yuzu stands motionless at the beginning of Ballade 1?

Jeffrey Buttle told his concept of choreography in World Figure Skating No 65 (published on August).

Thanks echotpe for telling us why. Actually the standing motionless at the beginning reminded me of the start of Patrick Chan's Elegie SP, which was also choreographed by Jeffrey Buttle. At first I thought it was a choreographic quirk of JB for the skater to settle in and feel the music, which is apparently not far off the mark judging from what echotpe posted.

while I agree whit you, reading various interview it seems that Yuzuru has a great respect for David Willson both as a person and a professional, so I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he happened to go back to him for coreography, even though his programs with other choreographer are more well received...

Their collaboration has so far been a case of the sum being less than the parts although there were glimpses of how it could be at Yuzuru's 2013 TEB Notre Dame exhibition and at the 2014 Worlds Romeo and Juliet II LP. I wish that someday David Wilson and Yuzuru together can create a masterpiece like what David and Daisuke did in The Garden of Souls and David and Yuna in Danse Macabre. That being said, I am also glad that Yuzuru is also trying other choreographers. I have the sense that Russian dramatic choreography may work well for him judging from Bobrin and Bestemianova's work with him in R & J I. I wonder though if Brian will be as open to the idea as Nanami was.

Thanks to SuzyQ also for the translation of Yuzuru's interview.

Thanks for the translation. I can't help but think of a previous post I've read (was it from Meoima?) of being confused as to whether Yuzuru was playing Romeo or Juliet in his last LP, but then that may have been purely due to the costume. ;)

Thank you for the Hana wa Saku NHK trophy video link! :)

Also I'm actually still confused about this. Who WAS he intending to portray. The costume and just about everything (especially in the end when he stabs himself) tell me he was probably trying to portray Juliet, since he already portrayed romeo back in 2011. :\

I think in the interview he was just kidding, or he might hint that there will be some tender movements that remind audience of Christine. But personally I don't think these move are feminine at all, in fact, I have the feeling it's the Phantom all the way:

or he might portrays all in one, who knows.

On the other hand, he had that balcony scene so... Personally, I wondered if maybe he was trying to tell the story itself than to portray a character?

On the other hand, he had that balcony scene so... Personally, I wondered if maybe he was trying to tell the story itself than to portray a character?

Seemed that way to me as well.
To me, R&J1 was either him portraying Romeo and Abe taking some artistic license with the stabbing(or maybe its not stabbing); or portraying the passion and love feelings of the story/characters

R&J2 is more about the tragedy; hell it starts with Ride to Mantua; which kicks off in the movie with Romeo finding out about Juliets death, and basically riding to the biggest tragedy of the story. And then goes from there; The next cut is the 'love theme from romeo and juliet (in Capulet's Tomb)' self explanatory (when romeo kills himself; and then juliet). He doesn't have in the intro of 'o happy dagger', but neither does he have the song between ride to mantua and the love theme (which is solely romeo); the rest of o happy dagger is a combo of RtM and the love theme; so you can't really say he's portraying one or the other from the music alone; nor can you say he's playing one and not the other. So it's probably telling the tragedy story (considering the choreo as well). In which case you could also say he's portraying both in a way. you could also say he's portraying Juliet and not be wrong.

So I think the whole of the LP is set at the end of the story(Him gesturing upwards(balcony scene) is probably a callback to illustrate their love.)

I think it's a good idea, especially in the sense of making it different from the first one; unfortunately not all good ideas work....

Yeah, I agree that R&J was a portrayal of the story as opposed to the actual character of Romeo himself (R+J). The cuts of his POTO music seem to reflect the character of the Phantom more, even though Masquerade is thrown in there.

I think in the interview he was just kidding, or he might hint that there will be some tender movements that remind audience of Christine. But personally I don't think these move are feminine at all, in fact, I have the feeling it's the Phantom all the way:

Initially I was bothered by the transition of Music of the Night~Masquerade~Down Once More because I assumed that the uploader had the correct order and I thought that Masquerade would have been so much better a song to end the program than DOM (which would be another season with the climatic ina bauer choreo sequence... just like R&J). But rewatching it I noticed that Hanyu is wearing a long sleeve in the DOM clip as opposed to his short sleeves for the other songs, so I'm wishfully thinking that DOM is in the wrong order and that it does end on Masquerade! I think if it ends with that Lutz and he nails the final jump right at the end of the program (much like his R+J 3S) with all the excitement of the music and then a spin then that would be so exciting :)

I'm not sure how many of you have watched Patrick Chan's 2011 nationals performance to POTO, but I would love to share with you just how uplifting Masquerade can be as the final song, look at how he actually gets the crowd up on their feet cheering before the routine even ends. Hanyu's choreography and style is so completely different that I don't think it would invite comparisons, but I really love Masquerade.

(Or probably I should stop speculating from boredom/excitement to see his programs lol. Sorry for the tl;dr)

^Not to add to the confusion. Per his choreographer David Wilson, Yuzuru was portraying Romeo:

http://www.absoluteskating.com/index.php?cat=interviews&id=2014davidwilson

But the long program is new and has a very interesting theme. Was it Yuzuru’s wish to skate to Romeo and Juliet?
It was definitely Yuzuru’s wish. He’d already used that theme before, two years ago. This time we also considered using the ballet music and Tchaikovsky version in addition to the movie version. We finally decided to use the Franco Zeffirelli movie version, Nino Rota music. He really had his heart set on it.

What do you think – why does he like that theme?
I think he’s a romantic and passionate person. He has seen the movie and is in love with its story. I also think he identifies with the Romeo character. He identifies with how Romeo felt desperate and gave his life for his passion. He feels the same way about his skating. He gave his life for skating the same way Romeo gave his life for Juliet. It’s kind of a perfect fit for him.

But then again Juliet also gave her life for her Romeo. ;)

Well, we will soon see whether the same sort of confusion will arise from Yuzuru's POTO LP. Who knows, Yuzuru may also be portraying Raoul depending on the music cuts.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXLYLbLlms8&t=3m25s (and at 1.40)
you can definitely hear Gerard butler saying 'music of the night' at the ina bauer. Whether the ina bauer is where it usually is? who knows; you can put the Choreo seq first now right?

Another thing I noticed yesterday:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auLp9JQYZBg&t=0m56s (ignore the music)
he does choreo that looks like it's for masquerade (or what S nagi thinks is for masquerade) after the 3AL3S. which is probably going to be after the 4Tcombo; maybe for time reference where the 3A2T is for RJ2. however, you can hear music of the night (I think) at the 4T combo(first vid)

I think he's going for a darker version than what PChiddy did;

(no don't stop I'm bored/excited too)

Well, he didn't explicitly say that Yuzu was portraying Romeo-- just that he identifies with Romeo. Yuzu feels the same towards his skating as Romeo does to his passion, and "It [the theme "Romeo and Juliet"] is kind of a perfect fit for him." All Wilson is answering is why Yuzuru likes the Romeo and Juliet theme (romantic, passionate, may identify with Romeo)-- not that his skate is portraying a certain character.

Basically, he can identify with a character, and so that motivates him to skate to the theme, but this doesn't mean that the skate will only be this character.
Unless Wilson or Yuzu state that he intended to portray such-and-such character or portray such-and-such feeling, I consider it as still open to interpretation.

But that's just me. Unless something is expressly confirmed or heavily implied, I think there's still room for interpretation.

On another note, all these POTO speculations and videos make me happy. :D I can't wait until November!

Thank you so much for the translation.

When he mentioned Christine is there too he might means he want to express the music and emotion that is universal regardless of gender. No that I mind if he want to play Christine though.

Maybe he wanted a particular cut of the music that was meant to be portrayed by christine? maybe thats why he thought christine could be part of the program?
and i notice that he might have the same idea as kana's, doesnt he? I mean with the whole kana wanted to be phantom for her fs and then yuzu doesnt mind being christine in his program part

The second paragraph:

According to Hidehito Ito, Chairman of the Figure Skating Division of JSF, Hanyu had the pain in the training, and this withdrawal is just to take extra precaution, prepared for the Cup of China (Shanghai, in November), the 3rd competition of GP Series. The medical certificate states that he needs bed rest, with a limited light exercise. Hanyu said in August, "Injuries are the biggest concern. I know I should have a sort of courage to take a rest (when necessary)."

Sorry, the last part 休む勇気も持てたらいい is difficult to translate, but I hope the above explains the meaning.

Here's another article about his injury. I've tried to translate it to the best of my knowledge. Since I have no medical knowledge, I might have not done a very good job in this translation.

Hanyu Yuzuru Absence From Of First Competition This Season
Back Bones Deformation
Required 4 Weeks of Bedrest

On the 23rd, Japan Skating Federation has announced that Hanyu Yuzuru (19)(ANA), men figure skate gold medalist from Sochi Olympics, has withdrawn from Finlandia Trophy (opening on Oct 10, Espoo, Finland).

According to authorized personnel, due to deformation of his intervertebral disc on his back, he requires 4 weeks of bedrest. Hanyu, currently located in Toronto, Canada, is said to be refraining from practice. If his condition is not improving, he might have to withdraw from Grand Prix (GP) Cup Of China (Shanghai) opening on November 7.

This article sounded more serious than the rest of the articles. I honestly hope this is not true and he will recover fully before COC.

Nam just tweeted that Javi, Yuzu and he all wear UA for training today...which means Yuzu starts some training, maybe on-ice training, now. I am so happy to hear about it. Thank you Nam for the latest information.

In the meantime, just saw this baby Hanyu moment with Coach:

articleWhy Yuzu stands motionless at the beginning of Ballade 1?

Jeffrey Buttle told his concept of choreography in World Figure Skating No 65 (published on August). This is a long but readable article. Sorry I can just make a summarized translation in this part rather than a full one last weekend.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd...._=1418346541_c67057ae6654f75c0b738a305eaac758

Jeffrey watched Yuzu’s emerging status so carefully. When choreographing the Ballade 1 program, he tried to put aside all mundane affairs Yuzu was bearing, and then keep one theme –

On ice, only skating;
On ice, only a Yuzuru Hanyu as skater, not a Hanyu with any title.

Somehow I think Yuzu is very lucky to meet good coaches, training mates since all the way. Now I’m even glad to see his choreographer also put his sensible and considerate feeling in this program.
Q: The initial scene, Yuzuru was not moved for a while. He listened to the music with standing motionless. Audience has also been drawn to the music at same time. What's the intention of choreography you tried to tell?

A: At beginning of music, piano voice was very strong. Although I tried to make some moves at first, none of them was suitable. It was difficult to tell a theme of the program in first 20 seconds. So, I tried to keep him still.

Theme of the program would be determined by it. The attention of everyone gathered on him, standing in the middle of ice, even the faint sound of pin fall was also likely to hear.

This is the message that I wanted to draw.

After the Olympics, he was in the condition like octopus pulling, requests have been also come from here and there and focused on him. When I listened to the introductory part of music, Yuzu was been pulling into all directions, and his figure under the strains was floated to my mind. Thus, I just wanted to tell the music itself.

When the moment he began to move, no matter how many obligations to bear and how much work that required his physical strength and time, the special moment of him only on ice has begun. And all the other things would be getting better -- It is not just symbolized such a thing, and it is also for all skating.

In addition, he chose of jumping 4T in the second half. This is a decision that should be respected, and it was also matching well to the music.

Someone told me this article has some details about Yuzuru's injury. But to read the rest of it you have to register an account. I don't understand Japanese much so I will post it here, I hope some Japanese poster will help us: http://astand.asahi.com/magazine/wrnational/special/2014092600009.html

Yuzuru, what do you mean exactly by 滑っている感覚 Subette iru kankaku?

Although I put “feel or sense while skating”, if anyone has any idea, please just advise me.

WORLD FIGURE SKATING 65:

Yuzuru Hanyu:

I believe we have no measure.
(Part 1/5 - maybe )

Question: You are doing a sort of ice show marathon in this off-season.
Yuzuru: Never ending show rush (laughs). Once it is settled, I will be able to be back to Toronto and finally start my practice.
Q: You have unveiled your SP of the new season, “Chopin Ballade No. 1”, before others. It is a very difficult composition with 3A at the beginning, and 4T as well as 3Lz+3T in the latter half of the program. It seems to be a program to open a new door in the aspect of expression.
Y: Its choreographer is Jeffrey Buttle and we left everything to Jeff, including the selection of music as well as the choreography. The sense or feel while skating is what I place the most importance on. As to the sense while skating, I’m feeling this SP is very difficult. In the first place, since it is a piano piece, I think I must make it structured, being conscious of the posture, toes, etc.
Q: Is it OK now for you to talk about your FP?
Y: Yes. My new FP is “Phantom of the Opera,” with the music arranged according to the story of Phantom.
Q: Did you select the music?
Y: I always loved the music of “Phantom of the Opera.” It became my favorite when I saw the film “Phantom of the Opera” in my music class that I was taking as an elective class of the second grade of junior high. It gave me a strong impression, and I have kept saying to my coach(es?) that I want to use it. But, as there are so many skaters have used it including men’s skaters such as Patrick and Daisuke, there had not been a chance. I can use it at last. Also, lyrics are allowed to be used from this season, and I thought it might give a fresh image.
Q: Do you have a different feel when skating to music with lyrics?
Y: I don’t think there is much difference. Because what we actually do would not be different at all. The impression of music might be different, or the facial expression of the skater might become easier to grasp. I read an interview of Tatsuki Machida in a magazine, and I am quite agree with him, that is, there is a possibility that lyrics would constrain skaters, for example, in case a sad melody has cheerful lyrics, the skater might need to make a cheerful facial expression. Lyrics could extend the skater’s range of expression, but, there is also a possibility they could narrow the range. I think it all depends on the person who uses the music.
Q: Is there any part or aspect that you go into the program story through lyrics?
Y: I’m not so conscious of lyrics myself. Although there are many parts choreographed with an awareness of lyrics, when it comes to whether I would only perform the role of Phantom, the answer may be “No”. It’s not everything. I may be trying to catch the background sound of the song for sure. Actually, this is what we have to develop further for the last-minute details after this, but I don’t think lyrics would affect that much.
Q: Who is the choreographer?
Y: Shae-Lynn (Bourne). It had proceeded between Brian and Shae-Lynn while I was unaware (laughs). It was not me who intended to request her, but Brian was thinking about Shae-Lynn (as the choreographer) since last year, and invited her to the Cricket Club in January. Brian was so willing to make me perform her program, and it was like having been decided to Shae-Lynn almost before I realized it.
Q: Is that for learning new things?
Y: I think so. It was the first time I worked with her, and it was actually difficult. The first thing I felt difficulty was that we had to start from talks like; “What moves are you good at?” As for SP, Jeff has choreographed for me once, and we kept polishing it up for 2 years. It is true that it was easier for me really to do his new program as well.

This looks like it's from the closing ceremony of NHK 2012! The first time he performed to "Hana wa Saku" actually
