It's hard to believe she's gone. Such a talent. Such a voice.

And to think, it's exactly 2 months ago today since I posted this in the "Let's Dance 80's" thread as part of my post of 80's song suggestions:

Ach, sod it! We all know the 1980's run from 1981 to 1990! And with this in mind, here is a song by an Irish singer that was released 8 days into 1990:

Boys, but that would make a beautiful Ice Dance programme. Has it ever been used in Ice Dance before? The only skating programme I can find using it is by Singles skater Cynthia Phaneuf.

Every news report about Sinéad's death has been using that song heavily. Which is understandable, given that it was her biggest hit. But it was only last night that I found out that it is actually a cover of a Prince song from 1985. So it wouldn't actually be eligible for Ice Dance this season (Prince's version would be eligible, though).

So, as my tribute, I would like to post one of her original songs, which she also wrote:

An old home-made cassette tape made off the radio, from about 1980. My husband playing the Grieg piano concerto with the Vancouver Symphony. He had a day job as a research chemist and wasn't famous like his younger cousin Jane Coop, but he worked steadily as a musician and I have these tapes to remember him.

Unfortunately, it has now transpired that Sinéad O'Connor was not the only music star that died on Wednesday. So did Randy Meisner, the bassist with the Eagles.

I love the Eagles. And so many of their songs became iconic.

I could easily turn this tribute into a "best of" the Eagles. But instead, I will limit it to the Eagles single that was most personal to Meisner. This song was his baby - he wrote it, and performed lead vocals on it:

Apologies that I didn't get posting this when I heard the news yesterday morning.

The bad run continues. On Wednesday, we lost Robbie Robertson, the guitarist and main songwriter for The Band (previously known as The Hawks when they were backing Ronnie Hawkins).

This one was hard to sink in. I don't know how many times I listened to the soundtrack of "The Last Waltz" when I was a youngster. And so much of it was Robertson's handiwork.

Because of that, for this tribute I am only going to select my two favourite songs by The Band, both of which he wrote:

I would love to see either of those being skated to, by the way.

I've made no secret on here that I much preferred Austria's original anthem by Haydn to the current anthem by Mozart. I always thought the Mozart tune was rather dreary compared to the pomp of the Haydn tune (which is now used as the German anthem). But, this version may just convert me!

I was referring to the national media. But, you're right, it is essentially the English media. They aren't interested in the rest of us. Unless we win something, in which case we're suddenly the best thing since sliced bread. And then they quickly forget about us again.

It really is unbearable whenever there is a major sporting event. All the talk is about the English participants. And harking on about past glories.

Although, to be fair, we're as bad. The NI media still goes on about us making it through to the last 12 in the 1982 Men's World Cup.

Anyway, back to talk of music.

Awwww, I love "The Impossible Dream"!!! And, as I said recently in another thread, I really want to see "Man Of La Mancha". As it stands, I have different associations for the various pieces of music (a Honda car advert; Scott Bakula; Javier Fernández). I want to put them all into their proper context.

The real Australian anthem may be the dreariest in the world but it could have been worse, one of the candidates when they changed it in 1977 - and which got 28% of the vote, I've read - was Waltzing Matilda. Which I am fond of, but seriously, it's a song about a sheep thief who drowns in a pond....

Back in the days when I had a sideline as a wedding-and-funeral singer (before hasty tubes in emergency surgery wrecked my vocal cords), I was so often asked to sing Amazing Grace. I'd always marvel to myself at the number of wretches who got married or buried.

I had never even heard that word before reading the lyrics, never mind knowing what it meant!

And I like the quip about nobody knowing the second verse. It's the same with "God Save The Queen". And I always have a wee smile when it comes to the time for the national anthem during the "Last Night Of The Proms", and the choir sings the first verse, and the audience joins in for the second verse. And everybody is looking down at their programmes because they don't know the words!

You know, I keep forgetting that Adam Hills is your's, because he does a lot of TV shows over here in the UK. But, I suppose you guys have the same problem with Ross Noble, forgetting that he is British.

It may be as far from rock music as you can get, but "pub song" is how most people would describe our national anthem!

By the way, I remember back in 2004, Chris Vermeulen won both World Superbike races at Laguna Seca in California. And during the Podium Ceremony after the first race, they played "Waltzing Matilda".

Don't worry, they had found the CD with "Advanced Australia Fair" on it by time of the podium for the second race.

Just by chance, I was watching a film last night, and the piece of music that as acting as the theme tune and which was used as incidental music throughout was "O Canada"! (Another anthem that I love!)

The bad news is that I can't find a video of the titles on YouTube. But the good news is that I have found the whole film on YouTube! (The title of the video may be in Polish, but the film is still in English. It just has optional Polish subtitles).
