Nebelhorn Trophy Senior Short Dance: Results; Protocols

Angelina and Ilia finished 12th out of 17 in the Short Dance, with a score of 53.98.

I was not able to watch LIVE at the time due to catching up on the MotoGP Free Practice 2 from earlier in the day (when I was watching Formula 1 Free Practice 2). And unfortunately, whilst videos for some other partnerships have already been uploaded to YouTube, no video has appeared yet for Angelina and Ilia.

There was only one comment in the competition thread. And it came from my good friend @elektra blue:

i knew Angelina and Ilia would not disappoint

You've got me waiting in anticipation of seeing them!

Angelina and Ilia are currently 6.09 points behind 11th position, Leia DOZZI / Pietro PAPETTI (ITA), and 0.52 points ahead of 13th position, Shira ICHILOV / Dmytriy KRAVCHENKO (ISR). Angelina and Ilia are at the head of a group of two partnerships, with Ichilov / Kravchenko.

Dozzi / Papetti are the bottom partnership of a group where 5 partnerships are covered by 3.97 points, stretching up to my other kids Sofía VAL / Asaf KAZIMOV (ESP) in 7th position, 10.06 points ahead of Angelina and Ilia.

Being realistic, Angelina and Ilia will not get any higher of their own accord. The only way they will move up is if somebody in the group ahead of them has a disasterous skate, which I would never wish on anybody.

Although they have the Israeli partnership breathing down their necks, if Angelina and Ilia put in the sort of Free Skate that we know they are capable of, they can pull away from them.

So, let's hope that they do just that!

Hot on the heels of the girls from Cyprus doing so well in the Junior Ladies SP yesterday, Angelina and Ilia will be joining them in action today at the Denis Ten Memorial Challenge in Astana, Kazakhstan.

There were a lot of withdrawals from the Senior Ice Dance at the Denis Ten Memorial Challenge. And I am afraid that Angelina and Ilia were amongst them.

But, it's not quite as straightforward as that. So, I'll tell you the story as it happened in the competition thread.

Having not seen them at the Nebelhorn Trophy, I didn't know what their costumes looked like. And I ended up following the wrong partnership during the Warm-Up. (It was towards the end of the Warm-Up that I realised that the partnership I had been keeping an eye out for was not them, but by then it was too late to wind back. I didn't want to miss watching their programme LIVE).

Angelina and Ilia were due to be the third partnership to start in their group. However, after the first partnership got their scores, their names were called. So, I hastily put up my "All the best" message:

Hang on, I thought there was another partnership to go before my kids.

And then they didn't appear. While I was writing a post, my friend @elektra blue broke the news:

Ach, for goodness sake. My Ice Dance kids have joined the list of withdrawals.

Well, that confirms that I was following the wrong partnership during the Warm-Up! (The perils of not seeing their first appearance of the season).

My friend then asked:

weren't they there in the warm up?

To which @Jumping_Bean replied:

They were there during the warm-up. Both still had their white Cyprus warm-up jackets on and they never took them off. At some point, I saw them standing at the boards and I didn't see them skating afterward.

The next time, I saw them, they were off the ice, but as it was the end of the warm-up, I thought they had maybe just gone off a bit earlier than the other teams, but I'm guessing now that they left the ice immediately after I had seen them at the boards.

After reading that, I decided to watch the Warm-Up again after the segment was over. And this is what I wrote when I did:

Right, I discovered why I didn't spot Angelina and Ilia. The camera only focussed in on them right at the very start of the Warm-Up, just after everybody came out onto the ice. Which was when I was posting my comment about having a sibling 1-2-3 in the standings.

They were just skating around the ice at the time. They didn't do any elements.

After that, they were only ever in the background at the boards. At one stage when the camera was following Lucy HANCOCK / Ilias FOURATI (HUN), you could see Angelina doubled up over the boards while Ilia and their coach were standing with her. The next couple of times they made it into the background of a shot, Angelina wasn't bent over quite as far, but was still using the boards to prop herself up.

To me, it looked like the issue may be that Angelina was feeling very sick, rather than there being an injury. I suspect she probably ate something that didn't agree with her.

With 2m 40s left on the clock, they started moving away from where they had been standing, went out of shot, and were not seen again until after the announcer told everybody to leave the ice. They were standing just behind the gate in their coats, gathering up their stuff.

I really hope my suspicions are correct, and that this is not something connected with breaking her leg last year. (She had both feet on the ice and wasn't holding the leg in the air or anything, so I'm taking that as a good sign).

Of course, that is just my own interpretation of what happened. I may be off the mark. So, since then, I have been keeping an eye on their Instagram accounts for an update on what happened. But, neither of them have said anything as yet.

Whatever happened, I wish Angelina all the best in getting better, and look forward to seeing them back in action.

Where has the time gone? It only seems like yesterday when Angelina was this cute little girl in Advanced Novices. Yet now I am posting this:

After Oliviia completed her campaign yesterday, Angelina and Ilia will be starting their campaign today at the Santa Claus Cup in Budapest, Hungary.

The Senior Short Dance is due to start at 19:54:00 CET (18:54:00 GMT / 20:54:00 EET / 21:54:00 MSK / 23:54:00 YEKT). So 12 hours from now.

Angelina and Ilia will be the 11th and final partnership to start. So, fourth and final partnership to go in Group 3.

Santa Claus Cup Short Dance: Results; Protocols

Angelina and Ilia finished 6th out of 11 in the Short Dance, with a score of 60.80.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Santa Claus Cup, as I was concentrating on the Bosphorus Cup in Istanbul and the Formula 1 in Qatar.

Angelina and Ilia are currently 3.37 points behind 5th position, Leia DOZZI / Pietro PAPETTI (ITA), and 0.01 points ahead of 7th position, Giulia Isabella PAOLINO / Andrea TUBA (ITA).

Leia and Pietro are the bottom partnership in a group of 3 partnerships covered by 0.58 points, stretching up to Mariia PINCHUK / Mykyta POGORIELOV (UKR) in 3rd position, 4.06 points ahead of Angelina and Ilia.

If Angelina and Ilia have a good Free Dance and can infiltrate the group ahead of them, there is the possibility that they could win a Bronze Medal. However, with only 0.01 points between them, the same goes for Giulia and Andrea.

With the smallest advantage possible over the partnership behind them, Angelina and Ilia cannot afford any mistakes, as it will almost guarantee them dropping at least one position. And although there is a gap of 4.67 points behind Giulia and Andrea, neither partnership will want to fall into that group, because that group stretches all the way down to Maxine WEATHERBY / Oleksandr KOLOSOVSKYI (AZE) in last position, 6.89 points ahead of Angelina and Ilia.

So here's hoping Angelina and Ilia do have a good Free Dance!

Overall, Angelina and Ilia were 5.14 points behind 6th position, Paolino / Tuba, and 7.72 points ahead of 8th position, Lucy HANCOCK / Ilias FOURATI (HUN).

Angelina and Ilia finished 8th out of 13 in the Short Dance, with a score of 61.69.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Golden Spin Of Zagreb, as I was concentrating on the Grand Prix Final.

Angelina and Ilia are currently 2.66 points behind 7th position, Elizabeth TKACHENKO / Alexei KILIAKOV (ISR), and 3.19 points ahead of 9th position, Natalia PALLU-NEVES / Jayin PANESAR (BRA).

Tkachenko / Kiliakov are at the bottom of a group of 3 partnerships covered by 1.24 points, stretching up to Charise MATTHAEI / Max LIEBERS (DEU) in 5th position, 3.90 points ahead of Angelina and Ilia.

Pallu-Neves / Panesar are at the head of a group of 3 partnerships covered by 0.37 points, stretching down to Lou TERREAUX / Noé PERRON (FRA) in 11th position, 3.56 points ahead of Angelina and Ilia.

To be fair, they actually did very well with what they had. Their SD programme had the second lowest Base Value of the entire field. It's Base value was 3.45 points lower than the next lowest programme, belonging to the aforementioned Terreaux / Perron. And it was only 0.26 points higher than the programme with the lowest Base Value of the field. And that partnership, Gabriela PALOMEQUE / Tanner WHITE (ECU), finished 27.99 points behind them in 13th and last position.

I don't know what the Base Values of the Free Dance programmes are going to be like, but Angelina and Ilia could do with putting in another good performance today. Because they are currently in no-man's land between two very tight groups of 3 partnerships. If they have a good Free Dance, they could potentially climb up to up as high as 5th position. But if they have a disappointing Free Dance, they could potentially drop down as far as 11th position.

So here's hoping Angelina and Ilia do have a good Free Dance!

Angelina and Ilia finished 8th out of 12 in the FS, with a score of 94.23. This meant that they remained in 8th position overall, with a score of 155.67.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Golden Spin Of Zagreb, as I was concentrating on the practice sessions from the final Formula 1 round of the season, and the Grand Prix Final.


Angelina and Ilia finished the Free Skate 1.73 points behind 7th position, Zoe LARSON / Andrii KAPRAN (UKR), and 5.84 points ahead of 9th position, Natalia PALLU-NEVES / Jayin PANESAR (BRA). They are at the bottom of a group of 4 partnerships covered by 5.03 points, stretching up to Charise MATTHAEI / Max LIEBERS (DEU) in 5th position.

Overall, Angelina and Ilia were 5.50 points behind 7th position, Larson / Kapran, and 8.64 points ahead of 9th position, Pallu-Neves / Panesar.

Well, the Free Dance essentially followed the same pattern as the Short Dance. Apart from the withdrawal of Lou TERREAUX / Noé PERRON (FRA), which moved everybody behind them up one position, the only change was the two partnerships ahead of Angelina and Ilia swapping positions.

Whatever was wrong with the Choreographic Step Sequence, it potentially cost them 7th position in the Free Skate. However, it wouldn't have made any difference to their overall finishing position. 8th position was their destiny.

Sofia Trophy Short Dance: Results; Protocols

Angelina and Ilia finished 6th out of 9 in the Short Dance, with a score of 62.60.

Unfortunately, I was not able to watch LIVE. However, I have now watched video, and have written a comment along the lines of what I would have wrote if I had been watching LIVE:

We're into the second half of the season, and this is the first time I will have seen their Short. So, I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

Angelina wearing a costume that is clearly inspired by Wonder Woman. It consists of a red top, orange belt and blue skirt. Ilia is wearing an unbuttoned blue shirt over a grey vest, with black trousers.

Some strange choreography at the start. But I like them drumming along to the music. Don't think I've seen anybody skating to "Knock On Wood" before. But it works really well.

Out of sync in both sets of Twizzles, more obviously in the second.

What is this version of "Tragedy"?! It does sound like the BeeGees singing, but it's been remixed so much that it is absolutely awful! Even Steps' cover would have been better than this (I didn't like Steps at the time, but they have grown on me in the years since).

I wasn't keen on the choreography they were doing during the chorus. It looked like they were trying too hard to do something that fitted the era. Again, the actions that Steps did in the chorus would have worked better. More subtle.

Very strange edit to the music to finish the programme. It went from the end of the chorus straight back to a few bars of the intro of the song.

I should have loved this programme. On paper, it ticked all the boxes. I love the songs they chose. I loved the costuems they were wearing. And I love them. But, as it turned out, I was left disappointed.

And to be honest, they looked disappointed too when they finished.

The video cut off as they were coming off the ice. But, they went into what was 5th and penultimate position at the time.

That said, it was their highest SD score in over 2 years, since the 2022 Roman Pavel Memorial.

Looking at the Protocols, the only issues were with the opening Twizzles. They got GOE of -1.07, and the Judges gave them two -2's and three -1's. But everything else got positive GOE, and all the Judges marks were either +1 or +2.

Angelina and Ilia are currently 0.02 points behind 5th position, Mariia PINCHUK / Mykyta POGORIELOV (UKR), and 3.04 points ahead of 7th position, Samantha RITTER / Daniel BRYKALOV (AZE).

Ahead of Pinchuk / Pogorielov is a gap of 4.19 points to Yuka ORIHARA / Juho PIRINEN (FIN), 4.21 points ahead of Angelina and Ilia. And then another big gap ahead of them.

Meanwhile, Ritter / Brykalov are at the head of a group of 3 partnerships covered by 1.53 points, stretching down to Emilia Monika ZIOBROWSKA / Shiloh Douglas JUDD (ROU) in 9th and last position, 4.57 points behind Angelina and Ilia.

Being realistic, all things being equal, this is a two-way fight over 5th position. And with only 0.02 points between them, it could go any way. So, Angelina and Ilia need to put in a good Free Dance to make sure that they get 5th position.

Angelina and Ilia finished 7th out of 9 in the FS, with a score of 97.59. This meant that they remained in 6th position overall, with a score of 160.19.

Unfortunately, I was not able to watch the Sofia Trophy.

Looking at the Protocols, it looks like the only issues were with the Twizzles, as this was the only element that did not have any positive numbers beside it. They got -0.49 in GOE, and two -2's and three 0's from the Judges.

Angelina and Ilia finished the Free Dance 0.39 points behind 6th position, Samantha RITTER / Daniel BRYKALOV (AZE), and 4.52 points ahead of 8th position, Emilia Monika ZIOBROWSKA / Shiloh Douglas JUDD (ROU).

Overall, Angelina and Ilia were 8.08 points behind 5th position, Mariia PINCHUK / Mykyta POGORIELOV (UKR), and 2.65 points ahead of 7th position, Ritter / Brykalov.

Considering that their Free Dance had the second lowest Base Value of the entire field, 7th in the FD was actually a good result for Angelina and Ilia. However, then you notice that the partnership whose Free Dance had the lowest Base Value, Marie DUPAYAGE / Thomas NABAIS (FRA), finished 4th in the FD. Like Angelina and Ilia, their only issues were with the Twizzles. In fact, the numbers for Marie and Thomas were worse, with -0.97 in GOE, and four -2's and one 0 from the Judges.

Although both parnerships had programmes that were similar in terms of Base Value (the difference was only 0.50 points), Marie and Thomas were able to finish so far ahead of Angelina and Ilia because they scored 3.46 points more in TES, and 4.84 points more in PCS.

So, if Angelina and Ilia want to challenge for higher positions in the results table, they really need to work on all aspects of their Free Dance. Firstly, increasing the Base Value of their programme. And then trying to improve both the Technical Elements Score and the Programme Components Score.

Angelina and Ilia will be making their Senior Major debut today at the European Championships in Tallinn, Estonia.

The Senior Short Dance is due to start at 12:30:00 EET (10:30:00 GMT / 13:30:00 MSK / 15:30:00 YEKT). So 5 hours from now.

Angelina and Ilia will be the 6th partnership to start. So, first partnership to go in Group 2.

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 13:08:25 EET (11:08:25 GMT / 14:08:25 MSK / 16:08:25 YEKT). So 5h 38m from now.

Angelina and Ilia are due to start at 13:15:10 EET (11:15:10 GMT / 14:15:10 MSK / 16:15:10 YEKT). So 5h 45m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before them withdraws.

European Championships Senior Short Dance: Results; Protocols

Angelina and Ilia finished 21st out of 29 in the Short Dance, with a score of 59.38.

Here is what I wrote about them in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:

You know you've made it when Chris Howarth mangles your name! And boys but he mangled Angelina's!

We join them with Angelina taking her jacket off to reveal her magnificient Wonder Woman inspired costume.

They then started practicing a ssection of their programme, and it looked good!

Whoever is controlling the lights really messed up. They forgot to dim them for the introductions, and then dimmed them for the last minute of the Warm-Up!

We don't have long to wait to see their programme. They're first up.

And here is what I wrote about their programme:

A bit of a delay before they started while they tried to sort out the lighting. They are doing quite a few laps.

They're going on ahead with the competition without it being completely sorted.

Twizzles out of sync. Both sets.

Midline Step Sequence good.

Loved the choreo for the intro of "Tragedy"

Pattern Dance good too.

The choreo for the chorus of "Tragedy" was good, but seemed a bit slow.

Chris thought they were brilliant! And totally non-biased CaroLiza_fan who has them in his avatar agrees.

He says they are a different level to everybody that has gone so far.

New leaders!!!

And the stream goes black just after their sccores are announced, so we don't see the celebrations!

@labgoat had previously commented that she couldn't listen to that song so soon after the events of the past couple of days. Which is understandabe.

I take it she was referring to Katharina MUELLER (DEU)'s brown outfit. Because Matteo ZANNI (ITA) was just wearing plain black shirt and trousers!

Angelina and Ilia are currently 1.31 points behind 20th position, Mariia PINCHUK / Mykyta POGORIELOV (UKR), and 3.14 points ahead of 22nd position, Mária Sofia PUCHEROVÁ / Nikita LYSAK (SVK).

Unfortunately, only the Top 20 get through to the Free in Ice Dance, so Angelina and Ilia were the first partnership to miss out.

Nevertheless, they had a good skate with scores that were similar to what they have been getting all season (we'll ignore the much lower score at the Nebelhorn Trophy, as that was their first competitive programme back after Ahgelina's injury). The unfortunate irony is that if they had got the scores that they got in their previous two competitions in Sofia and Zagreb, they would have been safely through to the Free.
