With all of the National Championships either happening or about to happen I'm wondering if you guys are discovering talents that you were unaware of beforehand. The silver medalist in the Italian Championship for junior ladies was Alessia Tornaghi and she is someone that I will keep my eye on for the next few years to come. This girl is as promising as I've seen. To my knowledge she is a novice who at nationals was allowed to compete a level up against the juniors.

I can't find her programs from this year's event but I did find one from last season. My god...her spins and energy are just unreal to watch.

Had anyone heard of her before?

Which skaters have you discovered?

Obviously U.S. Nationals haven't been held yet, but the young junior dance team on the rise at Midwestern Sectionals were Katherine Grosul & Cameron Colucci. They placed second as novices at U.S. Nationals last season, but defeated the JGP-participants-and-Youth-Olympic-qualifying junior team of Gropman & Somerville at Midwesterns and looked pretty darn awesome doing it. I couldn't find a youtube version of their sectional performances (they're on Ice Network), but here is their SD from the Chesapeake Open way back at the beginning of this season.

Xylina Rusit was the stand out senior for me in Central Pacific Regionals and Pacific Sectionals. She didn't make it to Nats, but I've gone back and watched her SP several times. I wish I knew how to take videos off of IN....

Just from nationals? Well Yuna Shiraiwa, though she's been doing well in JGP so it's not exactly a massive discovery...

I'm guessing Russian jr. nationals will be the one.

Malika Sharshenbayeva!

(Not nationals but really, how can you not include dubstep girl?!?)

Elif Erdem from Turkey is also very promising & a joy to watch: http://youtu.be/AAwdipHWVY0
I didn't see her Turkish Nationals performances, but I became aware of her because people were discussing her in that thread, so this sorta counts. ;)

Nina Oullette caught my eye and that 3-3 where she did the back shoot the duck into the second triple was beyond epic status!!!! Quite the save.

Someone should learn to do this on the regs!!

I discovered lots of new talents while watching the US qualifying comps this fall. My favorite novice ladies were Sierra Venetta and Kaitlyn Nguyen. Among the junior ladies, Shannon Porter was a special discovery. She qualified fourth in the Midwest sectionals behind Le, Chan and Rydberg. There is something so different about Shannon's skating, but I can't quite articulate just what. She's sort of a throwback and old-fashioned in the best sense of the word. She reminds me of Peggy Fleming with her long limbs and the unhurried quality of her skating.

Meiryla Findley and Austin Hale are a new junior pair that surprised me. They seem to be clicking very well for such a new team. Meiryla also qualified for the Novice ladies competition.

Yes, Grosul and Colucci were incredible. She is lovely. There were so many strong junior teams at Midwesterns. I liked Aya Takai and Alexander Martin too.

Nina didn't qualify for nationals this year. :sad4: I will miss seeing her skate. And I'll miss her elegant, modernist costumes. In the ocean of chiffon, sequins and illusion fabric, Nina's tailored, structured dresses were a breath of fresh air.

Georgi Kunitsa was vaguely on my radar last season, but I became a big fan after watching him at various Russian comps this season. He will be 13 in a few days & will compete at Russian Junior Nationals in a couple weeks. Not the most polished skater yet, but check out this armography :jaw:

It's unlike anything I've ever seen before. I like it. Strangely. :points:

They're lovely! Ooh, I'm getting excited for Nationals :yahoo:

One team that stood out to me from the JGPs was Yeri Kim/Alex Kangchan Kam of South Korea. Are they the first pairs team competing for Korea? The videos are also worth watching to see their training mates, like Max Settlage, cheering for them (they've trained with Delilah Sappenfield and competed here in Colorado Springs).

Hate to say that Yeri and Alex ended their partnership :sad4:, according to what I have read here on GS. Alex has a new partner.

And if Instagram photos that I have seen since are any indication, the new pair is training in Colorado Springs.

Not sure if she qualifies as a “new” discovery, given that her first Senior nationals was 21 years ago(!) But for me, the new discovery of the season from National Championships was British silver medallist Zoe Wilkinson. Or, as we all know her better as, Zoe Jones.

Of course, I had heard of Zoe before. But, she retired before I got into skating, so I had never actually seen her in action.

But, what a story! To be on the podium at every British Championship you competed in at Senior level (8 of them, including this year). To win your second National title in a row in an Olympic year (2002), and yet not be selected for ANY international assignments. And to then retire from competition and coach for 10 years.

But to then come back to competition as an Adult skater, and demolish the field at that level’s main international championship for 2 years in a row. Having only ever competed under 6.0 rules before. And then to return to Senior level at 35 years old and win your third British title, only for it to be taken away a few hours later because the judges missed scoring an element on somebody else’s FS. :drama:

If it was a film, people would criticise it for not being realistic!

Here is the livestream archive that contains the second group of the British Senior Ladies FS. The routine that earned Zoe first place in the FS is at the very start:

What a woman!
