State of Russian Ladies in skating: 2014-15 Season

It's tough for Adelina. Normally I think they would sent the reigning OGM to Euros to check her form and decide if she should go to Worlds if she can't skate at Nationals, but Elena/Liza/Julia are a formidable trio and if they keep skating great Adelina may not be able to go.

Well, after GPF, maybe Adelina will get her Europeans spot after all... (I just hope she's healthy enough to go).

I can only imagine the pressure to do well come Nationals has gone up several notches, especially for Julia and Anna. I wouldn't count any of the girls out for the title. Hope all the ladies will deliver clean skates!

There were 7 Russian ladies in JGPF and GPF combined and no one is particularly happy in the end. Maria Sotskova says she did not have enough time to prepare after the injury and Sima with Zhenya moved forward. Sima is not happy with her second place and spins. Zhenya said that the result is great but it was not her best skating as she missed the planned combo and had to make changes in real time. Yulia is not happy with herself in general - she says she just cannot skate FS this season, Eteri suggests to change it completely but Yulia wants to stuck with Juliette. Anna is not happy for herself and the country in general - she says that she hoped it would be the sweep (after that chances of her skating to, say, Ukraine seem very low). Elena is not happy because she was ill and could not properly prepare for GPF. Liza is not happy because she says she is very tired now - she had to fight through the FS and she "was almost dead" at the end. Also she blames too many competitions for her being ill before the GPF. I sense some apprehension that the second half of the season may be less glorious for her.

With all this the nationals which are in 2 weeks (alas, cannot go to Sochi this time) are the big question mark. I think it will be Elena then Liza, the places 3-5 will be split among Yulia, Zhenia, and Sima. It means that 3 Eteri's girls will fight for the bronze. Then Pogo or Leonova will take the 6th and the 7th or will challenge one of "the Eteri's spots". For the 8th - 9th it will be a fight between Artemieva and Sotskova.

Unfortunately, we will not have Proklova. As for Adelina, I think she will skip that one. With all the pcs boost it is just unlikely that she will not bomb without any proper training till now.

Liza is happy, she simply remarked that she is tired and has been ill. She said this after the SP too but she was nonetheless very happy to have led after the SP. If you see her IG, nothing but positive sentiments at this competition. Last night she was out enjoying her time with some of the ice dancers. She is hardly an unhappy person atm.

That's her full quote - did not see others yet (they may follow): Немножко удивлена своим результатом, – сказала Туктамышева после награждения. – Первый раз за сезон сумела откататься совершенно чисто. До сих пор этого не удавалось. Перед финалом "Гран-при" я болела. Наверное, сказалось то, что у меня в этом сезоне было слишком много стартов, и организм просто истощил резерв. Приехала в Барселону не в самой лучшей форме. Под конец произвольной программы сели ноги, так что каталась я, честно говоря, на последнем издыхании. Но очень рада, что все получилось именно так

"A little bit surprised by my result. For the first time this season I managed to skate absolutely clean. Before GPF I was ill. Likely it was because I had too many events this season and my body has simply used all its reserves. I came to Barcelona not in the best condition. At the end of the FS my legs stopped to function and I had to skate frankly speakin on my last legs. But I am very glad that it all turned out just like that".

For me it is not the happiest interview.

You just contradicted yourself with this quote. "But I am very glad [ie. happy] that it all turned out just like that". She just said she is happy with how things turned out. Right from the horse's mouth, she said she is happy with the outcome. You can be tired and happy at the same time.
And this is not the face of an unhappy woman:

The lack of Russian sweep was the reason for her meltdown in the K&C? She had one fall, not like she completely faltered. Ok well, she kinda faltered after the fall, but it's more in her head than her blades.

3 months ago I was convinced that the GPF would consist of 5 Russians and Gracie Gold.
But even with the strong Russians there are surprises, I think many, including myself, didn't expect.

Adelina's injury came as a surprise, so did Yulia's faltering. I didn't see Liza ever coming back tbh and now look what happened!
The only one who came out as expected for me was Radionova.

So I agree- a big questionmark for Russian nationals!
I expect at least one of Serafima and Evgenia on Senior's podium and I'm praying for Yulia that she can get it together before Anna does cause as much as I love Anna- the first 2 spots for Euros and Worlds seem to be going to Elena and Liza right now, so the 3. one will be bestween her and Yulia imo!
Can't imagine that Adelina will be back...

Would be very surprising if she were not glad to win the GPF - she is an athlete for one thing. "I am glad = I am happy...." in this connotation yes she is happy and she smiles. But I sensed a lot of concern in what she said - and that was the bulk of the interview. We will see in just 2 weeks if she peaked in Barcelona or will continue to improve. I think if she wins the nationals she will be really happy. And I did not mean that she is unhappy in general - I meant that there are things she is not happy about namely her condition.

"It is sad that the podium is not completely Russian. It would much more pleasant. If it were not for our mistakes.... I know how we all work - we train together. It is very sad that with so much work there is no result. Important that this year I went a little bit up at GPF. Then it will be better. My coach says that before the nationals I will do not 1 FS but 3 each training. And the training will be more intensive. After the programs we will do the jumps. So that at the nationals everything should be automatic".

After looking at the standings chart and seeing that Euros/4CC do not count for standings points(am I right on that?)... here is what I'd do if it continues to mostly be a tossup between Yulia and Anna for the 3rd spot...

1. Send Anna to Euros where she would have a chance to getting a medal even if she bombs. Seeing the coming domestic competition, she may not have many opportunities for Euros/Worlds in the future.
2. Send Yulia to two or three(ought to be more than one) February/March B competitions. These would be a little later than Euros and far less pressure. If she performs well in those competitions, send her to Worlds otherwise send Pogorilaya. Considering the typical competition at those events, just skating will put her over the top as the #1 ranked skater(so she would be able to call herself "former #1 ranked skater" in the future), though if she doesn't go to Worlds it would likely only last for a few weeks.
3. The option for Yulia could also be opened for Adelina too...

I think it would be sad if Anna never gets a Euros/Worlds medal and if we never see Yulias R&J done (mostly) cleanly. I also don't think having either of their seasons end early would be healthy for them.

[edit]

Euros/4CC actually does count for points...

That's not necessary, though. Liza's season ended early last year - and she had a bad injury to boot - but look at her now?

I'm not saying that I wish either Anna or Julia to end their seasons early - I don't, I wish them both the very best - but merely saying that if it does happen for either or both of them, it is not the end of the world; they can still regroup and rebound.

I'm all for this.

I don't think there's an way Yulia will be sent to Worlds over Anna unless Anna goes lights out and Yulia bombs. If Anna won a medal at the GPF, maybe, but they were essentially tied for 4th/5th. Julia's also delivered more consistent SPs this year. It's also evident that she gets higher PCS than Anna.

Unfortunately, for Anna, this is what we all predicted this year... if she doesn't do exceptionally well, she'll be pushed aside for another Russian woman -- in this case, Tuktamysheva who's lighting it up. What Anna needs most is competitive fire (no pun intended). Her FS at the GPF was downright depressing... not just mistakes, but the performance itself was just flat.

At this point, I could even picture Leonova being considered for Worlds more than Pogo, if Pogo does poorly at Russian nationals.

I'm fairly certain it will be between Tukt and Radionova (I'm betting Radionova, even with Tukt's win at the GPF). Julia/Anna will need a complete 180, mentally.

I bet the team for Euros will be Tuktamysheva, Radionova, and Lipnitskaya. I think it's between Yulia/Pogorilaya for the last spot. I see Yulia doing better at Russian nationals/ being helped by having a better international reputation.

My guess is Sotnikova doesn't compete at Nationals and just sits this season out. I don't see her getting a Euros spot just based on reputation when she hasn't competed all season even though she's the Olympic champion.

Well...to be fair Sotnikova did compete in a Russian Cup event. ;)
