I think in Men's FS it is. Nobody besides these two has done it in my memory (starting from the 80's).

In Ladies, on the other hand, it seems to be the rule rather than the exception. Katarina Witt, Kristi Yamaguchi, Oksana Baiul, Tara Lipniski, Sarah Hughes, Yu-na Kim and Adelina Sotnikova all won gold at their first Olympics. Only Shizuka Arakawa won OGM at her 2nd OG in my memory.

In pair skating it's also common, although there are more exceptions. Gordeeva/Grinkov, Mishkutyonok/Dmitriev, Oksana Kazakova and Tatiana Volosozhar won OGM at their first Olympics - as opposed to Berezhnaya/Siharulidze, Totmianina/Marinin, Shen/Zhao and Maksim Trankov.

But in ice dance it's the rarest of all. Only Virtue/Moir won OGM at their first Olympics in my memory.

I wonder after being two months off ice plus rehabilitation, how a skater starts back on ice.

what she said actually is something like "I don't know about spins or jumps but I heard he has started skating."
I think they don't want to reveal much details, or she doesn't know much details.


There was a news in the magazine that in mid may that he was back already, I think it is official confirmation of that.

:ghug: Im glad I can confirm he’s already started his practice on ice and got jumping and spinning although he doesn’t do them so hard! :)

Sokka sokka. Thank you. That's understandable if they don't reveal things. The main concern now is watching traumatized place attentively and being alert on how it will be doing later on. Warning signs should be called out instantly and fixed.
I hope Yuzu's beloved Team is focusing on him now and watching him closely. He obviously needs everyone's support and love now. It seems they became closer after this WC and understand him better now.
I also believe Tracy is taking good care of him as he clearly started with just sliding. What a great opportunity to help him improve his SS. I wonder when anything can be revealed about music and choreography. Probably not soon, though knowing him, he might have come up with ideas already, being no-ice-bored lol.

Edit: Well, I'm puzzled because of unclear announcements. If he was back on the ice in May already it would be reassuring to know some details though.

I’m happy he’s recovered enough to resume training, but like all of us here it seems, I hope he is taking things gradually and sees how his body reacts. TBH, I can understand why skaters may not wish to reveal their music early, but not about recovery from injury and resuming practice. Why not write a couple of lines online to reassure fans?

Well, they often succeed young and then leave the sport, like Yamaguchi, Baiul, Lipinski. But others stick around after they first achieve success and continue winning Worlds, Olympic and GPF medals into their twenties (Witt, Kwan, Slutskaya, Butyrskaya, Rochette, Asada, Kim, Ando, Kostner, Suzuki, Wagner). Also pair skating is second to ladies in the frequency of winning OGM at the first Olympics, and that’s where the oldest figure skaters are of all the fs disciplines.

Mrs Shirota said that Yuzuru will start training around June. Preparation for new programs that were scheduled in early May will be postponed until after he starts training again.

Magazine "Figure skating Life vol 6" stated his leg still hurts, he was not back on the ice at the middle of May and he just started his rehabilitation at that time.

Mrs Kobayashi said Yuzu was back on the ice later than it was planned. He has started skating, but she doesn't know about jumps and spins.


There was no official announcement that he was back on ice in May. That talk came about because someone mentioned that she read in a magazine that he was back on the ice in May, but they could not recall which magazine. Thus; it could not be verified for accuracy. Refer to post #39604.

It's great to hear he has started skating again after a long wait and recover. But I don't expect any details too soon as perhaps they want to watch him close and see how it goes first. He needs to be careful and build up his SS, stamina and spins and jumps so that he is healthy and strong to compete. Also maybe there were some music ideas set but he needs to feel it on ice before he is sure that is what he wants to skate to. I don't mind waiting for music to be revealed as long as he is happy with his choice.:)

i can understand it with yuzu case. figure skating is not so major sport here compared with football or baseball. but yuzu is different. his news about his condition in May got top news in yahoo japan and even my family member who doesnt have the interest in figure skating knew that. its ridiculous. definitely media want his news so much, but it seems yuzu side tries not to reveal it to prevent unnecessary fuss and i find keeping silent makes sense considering the situation in japan.

I don't understand why, this set up is too tight. If he wins National again he has to go to this competition and skip 4CC again?? But this 4CC is important because it will happen in Olympic arena??
 
I don't see anywhere in that article mentioned that Yuzu goes by default. Shoma is the best too. There are a few bests in Japan.;)
