2017 World Ladies FS

Once more, the highlight of the evening for me was this little sunshine, Mai Mihara.

Even though Sotskova fairly won her right to be here, I missed Lena. And I guess the Russians also missed her.
No words needed about Pogo. I'm a hopeless romantic who wishes a world championship with her and Stolbova/Klimov gold medalists. :palmf:

Cause she is all too familiar with her Federation and she just gave them a reason to not put her on their Olympic team. She is rightly devastated as the Olympics is the goal of 99% of figure skaters I would reckon. Do you not pay attention? This is her career equivalent of her parents dying in a plane crash. For all intents and purposes, her career just took a nosedive into the Ural Mountains.

No need to use such extreme superlatives. Yes she did very poorly but if she has a good season next year and a good skate at Nationals, I don't see any reason why this result would affect anything.

You stole my words. I really wanted Pogorilaya to do well at these worlds.

I remember just before worlds started there was a poster on this forum that said that Pogorilaya was due for a splat fest....you bloody jinxed her! I hope she comes back from this. She deserves that Olympic spot.

Sotskova was very, very laboured today. I love her, but she was the slowest she's ever been in the FS.

Next season is gonna be exciting, especially the bloodbath with the Russian, Japanese and American women for those precious Olympic spots! Oh the pressure for the Japanese girls in particular with only 2 spots! Hopefully Satoko will come back with all cylinders firing and looks like a battle between at least 3 girls for the second placing.

My heart still Truly sinks for the Anna Pogo, I fear that she's gonna be put out into the scrap heap now :(

Poor Anna embarrassed not only herself but the Federation. She was already on borrowed time after having been placed behind Sotskova at Nationals.

After Miyahara withdrew, this should have been a gimme silver medal for her. It would have looked especially nice because Russia has never gone 1-2 in the ladies event.

Sadly, I think we can stick a fork in my beloved. :(

The Japanese judge needs fired. She/he scored Zhenya *barely* ahead of Katelyn in the long program.:disapp: He/she/it also had Katelyn higher on PCS and scored Zhenya's PCS at 70 points, about 6 points behind what all the other (competent) judges scored her at. I'm legit baffled this person is allowed to judge. Jesus take the wheel. :slink:

Also, Zhenya's lutz normally takes off from a flat (not the same as a flutz). I typically don't mind the ! as it's fair. My only issue is Osmond doesn't always get the ! when her edge is just as unclear. :scratch2:

Anyway, JPN judge aside, I'm not seeing any huge issues on the ladies event.

At least she scored Zhenya first? I don't see the outrage. I'd have had the medalists a little bit closer in score, too. Maybe this judge has different tastes in what makes a good program and choreography? She won't be the only one.

Honestly, seeing Zhenya's jumps IRL is a little bit more off-putting than on TV, when compared to Katelyn and Gabby, and even Anna (even though she splatted). She winds them up SO MUCH with her body. I really hope coaches don't start teaching girls this technique hoping they won't grow after puberty like some Russian Roulette game of skating. Just IMO.

I will, obviously, give her huge props for mental toughness. And her transitions and backloading are not easy, either. She may be the most consistent top skater in all of ladies' figure skating history.

I don't think there is a clear Russian #3 though. Elena may or may not get her issues together, Maria isn't all that reliable, either, and Anna has honestly been doing the best out of all of them except for this event. Yes, Anna must be a few steps ahead of the others who have politics on their side, but maybe she can establish that by medalling at the GPF next year. I guess it depends on if RusFed thinks she's going to melt down at the Olympics out of pressure :ohwell: I really hope that wasn't the only issue here.

The results are fine. No real quibbles.

But I can't help wondering how things would have turned out with a stricter tech panel.

But again, all the argument is over a few points of PCS, and not the much greater scoring impact of a loose panel.

Edit: I saw videos of triples that I couldn't have argued if they were downgraded... not just under-rotated... downgraded. Those videos are available for the tech panels to review, too.

Gabby had the best sport spirit yesterday. She was before and after winning. She cheers for her mates. I am a new fan ☺

"Ashley Wagner ✔ @AshWagner2010
Let's take a moment to all thank @Karebearsk8 for saving America because let's be honest she did. First time at worlds and she saves the day"

It is true, Karen did completely save the day. It was great for her too, because there were people saying she should be removed from the worlds team for what happened at 4CC, she proved those people wrong here!

actually the only judge with common sense in that whole panel

I know Anna could deal with it. There was similar situation with here couple of seasons ago. She just need professional help with psychological issues. It might really help. Good luck Anna and getting better for new season!!

Well It seems great job to me! At least someone who looks care about FS future. Maybe there will be few more year by year. Let's hope...

I also want to add that is why i hate slanted panel and disagree with it in principle.

You have a faulty junior
Maria get 64.79 in PCS,
an absolute disastrous Anna get 62.86
a mistake ridden Kostner still get 71.03.

Then you get these near clean as personal best performances receive these sort of PCS

Karen 64.33 (Lower than Maria)
Mariah 60.92
Mai 63.89
Dabin 58.73
Elizabet 58.15
Zijun 49.54 (How come her TES only beat Anna's disastrous TES by only 0.96 points???)

How can this competition not looking like rigged towards the Europeans in particularly the Russians?!
It's not just the Russians. Big feds lead skaters tend to receive big PCS marks (Mao, Gracie etc.). Btw, Maria was better than Karen pcs wise

Overall watching the event its a bit sad to see the state of women's figure skating. I felt like so many programs lacked spark. What Medvedeva has done is amazing but 154 was really too high for what she has put out, she really hasn't gotten better than she was at the beginning of the season. The way the scoring system is being handled it has been so boring to watch the competitions this year, no one has a chance of beating Medvedeva if she is clean no matter how good they skate. Kaetlyn didn't have a chance. Seriously, Tanos should stop being an interesting variation in the air after the first few jumps when they are on every single jump. Medvedeva's jumps are good solid jumps but they're really not outstanding enough to warrant such high GOEs. I don't want to take away from her accomplishments, because she has been such a rock in the sport which is rare and wonderful to see but Medvedeva should not be so untouchable. It's just kinda hard to watch.

I understand your point. For the sake of competition and healthy rivalry it would have been better to keep the skaters closer to each other in standings, but also it would have been:scratch2: if it was so. Medvedeva made herself a queen of modern skating. Why put her down to other people's level, especially when they aren't clean? I suppose there could be the arguement if both Canadians were absolutely clean. In that case their score would have been higher and "closer", as one could say.

totally. agree.

Have we ever seen such movement on the ladies podium in an Olympic cycle like we have seen in the last 3 years? Only Med has repeated as a medalist while everyone else has been one and done so far. It seems like no one is consistent now to stay on the podium for more then one year. Usually heading into the Olympics the skaters are narrowed down to just a few for the podium but there are literally about a dozen ladies who can get on the podium in 2018.

It depends on the talent and consistency of skaters. Nowadays there are too many talents, who are inconsistent:) That's the secret of such variety.

A few thoughts on the ladies:
Carolina - first time I've ever seen her live. Gorgeous skater although she seemed a tad slow tonight. The audience was totally in love with her.
Wakaba - love her and love her musicality. I can't help but think of Midori Ito when I look at her. Hope she can continue to train the 3A. Good job for her first Worlds.
Ashley - loved her Exogenesis, but this has certainly not been her year. Just didn't seem like she could get any momentum going for the whole year, and it looked like tonight her heart just wasn't in it.
Gabby - Those jumps! Wow! Saw her skate this FS at Sk Amer in October, and she has really put some fire in it since then. Good job.
Mai - glad she could redeem herself in the FS. Shame about the 3 spots. Look forward to watching her grow and hope she doesn't have any health issues.
Kaetlyn - this delightful young lady knows the power of performance. Unlike most, I loved both of her programs. So happy she could deliver, even with the pressure of being favored to medal. Big jumps, a real spiral and Russian splits, facial expression without being "over the top". Wow!
Karen Chen - Kudos to her for coming out and holding it together and getting the 3 spots. Close to the podium, but not quite.
Anna - My dear Queen Anna, my sentimental favorite. We tried so hard to lift you up and carry you on our shoulders with our cheers and our applause. But it wasn't meant to be. Such a disappointment. That one fall on her knee looked so painful. Please cheer up, heal, and come back fighting.

I see what you did there:biggrin:

I could have cried at the end of Anna Pogo's routine. (I didn't)

After that, my heart just wasn't in it. I did watch on, but my mind was elsewhere. I was actually thinking about how to word a couple of the Fan Fest edits that I am preparing!

Even Kaetlyn coming second couldn't make up for it. (Under normal circumstances, I would have been ecstactic, because I just love her!)

I really hope that this week was just a blip for Anna, and that we are not returning to the bad old days of a couple of seasons ago.

Here's to a bigger and better 2017-18 season for her!

Same for me. It was such a downer. Just compare this to last year's Ladies competition.
