2014 Nebelhorn Trophy

Dance practice report part three:

While the two previous groups only did partial programs the couples in the last group skated almost full programs.

Hawayek/Baker (USA) skated to Romeo and Juliette. They wore pale purple and blue costumes. The twizzles looked good with nice ice coverage (they almost fell on the twizzles later during practice though). Their spin was good with a smooth change of direction. The lifts were good and the second one had very smooth changes of position.

Chock/Bates (USA) skated to An American in Paris. They wore black costumes, hers had a strange white ribbon in the back that looked a bit like a tail. They did a nice lift with a really great exit. The rotational lift was good, but the curve lift could be a little smoother. I didn't really see them do their spin or twizzles.

Zhiganshina/Gazsi (GER) (I just read that their music was a variation of Swan Lake I will have to pay attention to that tomorrow). The costumes were black and rather normal for them. The program was very entertaining as always, but more serious than previous ones. There were some really funny moments, lots of acting and drama. You should totally watch it. They sadly struggle a bit an the technical side with slow twizzles and spin. The lifts were good, but they struggled with the changes of position in the rotational lift.

Weaver/Poje (CAN) skated to Four Seasons in pink and brown costumes. She wore headband with roses. The beginning was light, airy and spring-like followed by more dramatic music (they didn't skate this part). The lifts were very good with smooth changes of position. The spin was a little slow and I don't think they held the positions for enough turns. The twizzles were very good with the leg extended to the side parallel to the ice as one difficulty.

Now I just have to decide whether to go back to the rink and watch the men's free skate or to stay here and sleep.

Gracie can't afford to start slow yet again because that's why Julia was a medal favorite in Sochi and Gold wasn't because she was inconsistent early in the season while Julia won almost everything in sight. There are to many girls clawing their way to the top and if she doesn't get it together she'll be left behind.

Late to the party, but watching the ladies - how nice to see Tuk do a nice SP! Brooklee was enchanting and Mariah was so fun to watch, but for me the standout performance was from Juulia. She just floated in that SP, and I didn't even mind the popped jump because she kept the mood. Even though she had to jam all the elements in, her program let me breathe and enjoy it.

sneakypie thanks for the practice reports!!

So excited that I'm now in Ireland and do not have to wake up at ridiculous hours in the morning to watch the men's FS :)

Ladies SP top three report and interview.

Alena is currently leading by less than two points before Liza with 66.72. Gracie is on third with 61.82.

The Russian opened her program with a great triple toe combination, followed by a triple flip. Interesting to see was her acting to smile by Nat cole. She kind of has that overacting potential in her genes and did her reputation once again justice.

After the competition Alena said that she was actually quite happy about her performance,
just the double Axel needs to be better as I had my hand down on the ice.

Alena was coached for many years by Morosov, a very successful but not always easy to handle person. Everyone probably remembers his outbreak at Bern when he was shouting at Alena and she was all over the place in her programs.

Her new coach is Evgeni Rukavicin who is a more laid back person compared to Morosov and both of them do have one big goal for the future as she explained.

As soon I realized that I wont be able to go to Sochi I said new goals and that goal is Pyeongchang 2018 and the first step to accomplishing that goal is here at Oberstdorf.

Second came Liza who reached a very disappointing 10th place last season at the nationals and therefore also couldnt take her chance to battle for the medals at Sochi.

Liza about her first visit at Oberstdorf
I actually like it here, the whole place is nicely surrounded by mountains.

Liza opened up with a triple toe combination - with the second one slightly overrotated. This however should remain the only bigger mistake in her program today. Liza was performing with grace and elegance to Maurice Ravels Bolero, hitting level 4s with ease and its hard to believe that she is just 17 years old. The expression in her face, the movement of her body it was even sexy at times, great variety and a lovely performance by her.

It was Lizas second competition this season as she explained,
I am very happy with my performance today, the atmosphere at an international competition is always different to what I had a few weeks ago at Russia and I am very happy that I was able to control my nerves.

Third came Gracie Gold who is coached by Frank Carroll and the 19 years old likes coming over to Oberstdorf she said.
I actually prepared here at Oberstdorf for the Sochi Olympics and its a nice place with the cows and all that.

Gracie who is able to perform a triple Lutz - triple Toe sadly missed that element right at the start of her program so that she had to use the triple loop - double Toe as a replacement later in her program.

The American actually took it easy,
Everyone can fall on the triple Lutz, its a difficult element and I wish it would had happened in the practice and not today in competition.

Her program itself was as her name suggests very graceful with a lot of big moments, especially her stepsequence was ace.

All three ladies as different they are gave the crowd some big moments and no matter what type of acting or skating you like, there was something in for all of us.

I absolutely enjoyed it, some high quality skating today in the ladies competition.

1. Alena 66.72
2. Liza 64.94
3. Gracie 61.82

A "more emotional" review about every skater a bit later ;)

Just finish watching Gracie's and Turkkila's performances.
I actually liked Gracie. Yes, she did that mistake but it happens. The rest was very good.

I'm surprised with Turkkila. Very good indeed. I wasn't expecting that from her.
I just hate the vocal version of the beautiful Morricone's music. In fact, I hate classical crossovers in general. :disapp:

Why can Gracie get a new short? I really hate it when skaters reuse old programs and she has all of the resources in the world.

She did about what was expected. She never shines until later in the season.

My only concern with her is that she usually looks fitter at this stage in the game.

She kept it because she only used her SP for the 2nd half of the season.

That's sort of my take on Gracie's performance today. I still don't LOVE the program, but I actually thought she pace the program quite well and that the rest of it was fine.

And yes, Juulia was lovely! I think it helped that she didn't have the burden of trying to get Finland an Olympic spot!

You are correct about that.

When I chatted with some of the team they said that she feels kind of relieved this season. The Finnish team is actually lovely, you can really ask them everything.

I really wish they would do something about the quality of the stream. Or at least keep the camera in focus...is that too much to ask?

Where can you watch the skates after the fact? I know someone was good enough to post th e link yesterday but I can't find it :/

OMFG. Gracie's skate today :bang:

FML! Gracie's scores today :disapp:

She will lose her #1 US girl status in NO TIME.

Congrats Liza, Alena, K/S and T/M! I LOVED T/M's programs. They are progressing so fast.

I haven't seen Gracie's skate but that's a pretty good score for a short program with a mistake. And I'll be hitting my head against a wall if Polina Edmunds, with her juniorish presentation and music, becomes the US #1. If she does, she will definitely be the #1 girl, not lady.
