2014 Olympics Ladies Free Skate

Aside the three medalists, I was impressed with Gracie how she held her nerves. I thought she was going to mess up with her cursed skating order right after Adelina and the crazy hometown cheering that went on. But surprisingly she seemed calm and collected as she hit the elements one-by-one albeit stone-faced looking at times. The only noticeable major technical glitch was the fall on her triple flip which I hope she can improve on during the off-season. She's been getting "e" on her flips consistently and this time was no exception either. I don't wish her to be a chronic lipper and I'm sure Frank will address the problem and work on it. After the departure of my favorites like Yuna, Akiko, and Carolina, Gracie is the one grabbing my heart the most at this point and I look forward to her developments and progress down the road.

Yes, I am encouraged to see Gracie's fight at this event. A total 180 from what we saw at the beginning of the season. Here's to more development for 2018.

No, I am telling you that Slutskaya should have won the SP in SLC, but she was hosed in the scoring and that's the only reason why Adelina is the "first Russian lady to Win Olympic Gold." The only reason why Sarah Hughes was able to win in SLC, is cause Irina Slutskaya was hosed in that SP. Russia did file an inquiry into that result but it was denied.

It is hardly a given that she would have won if she had been first in the short program. Michelle was usually at her best coming from behind--see 2000 and 2001 Worlds. We'll never know if Irina would have won. What we do know is that she had the gold in her hand after Michelle fell but failed to hang onto it.

The problem of a dubious outcome started with the poor judging of the short program. There is no way Adelina and Carolina should have been as close to Yu-na as they were.
I'm feel sure Yu-na saw the handwriting on the wall, as I did, when that happened. The technical content of Caro's lp program was sadly missing. I believe it had a bv of around 57.

I am pleased that anyway this fraud has ended. Long live Putin! Long live Russian sport!

As much as I dislike Putin (I will never be able to eat poutine again - for some reason I mix the two up - I know not logical but I just can't fathom eating the Canadian heart attack special) people Putin does not control the skating judge and you can't deny that Adelina in this case had to be considered a possible gold medallist. Nice work by Mao, Yuna and Carolina. I hope they retire quickly with happiness and joy.

Skaters train their entire lives to be on an Olympic team. They sacrifice so much, their lives are not normal. They miss out on a lot. A lot of money, time and energy goes into their skating. When a skater deserves to win, they should. It is beyond sickening that some childish, petty country has to resort to back room judging deals in order to prop up their junior-ish skaters who are"not ready for prime time"
I am embarrassed for Russia because it is so obvious. Is it really that important to have your skater win even if she does not deserve it??
Disgusting and despicable.

My podium from here on in:
Yuna
Caroline
Moa

I really congratulate Mao for a great skate!
Yet, I was really surprised about how the technical panel called some of her jumps. I actually thought the 3A was underrotated whereas 3F3L and 2A3T were clean. Well, for the panel the 3A was not underrotated whereas 3L and 3T were:think:.
For sure one can see that the 3A was not fully rotated, so a positive GOE is not justified. For the 2A3T it is interesting that despite the < she got a positive GOE.:yay:

Yuna and Carolina had sophisticated programs. What is great about Adelina's program? Yuna, Carolina and Adelina had the jumps but there are other parts of skating as well.

In 1996, Michelle Kwan defeated Chen Lu at the World Championships. I though Lulu was more artistic however Michelle's program had one more triple but I was fine with it because Michelle was artistic as well. Sonitkova on the other hand has mediocre foot work, stiff landings and a lack of musicality. Why are there component marks and GOE's and the PCS scores suddenly high? Adelina never had scores like these even when she skated well and Yuna never had such low marks when she skated cleanly. I would like to see what happens at the Worlds next month.

the problem is others disagree. One could use a similar argument why Davis and White should lose to Virtue and Moir = it is th eye of the beholder.

She should not put in the same category in Kim and Costner after the SP. That much is clear if you watched the SP carefully.

My rankings:
SP FS
1.Kim Yu-Na 2 2
2.Adelina Sotnikova 3 3
3. Carolina Kostner 1 4
4. Mao Asada 16 1
5. Gracie Gold 4 7
6. Julia Lipnitskaya 5 5
7. Ashley Wagner 6 6
8. Akiko Suzuki 7 8
9. Polina Edmunds 8 10
10. Kanako Murakami 12 9

I would switch Polina with Kananko, and I agree with your standings!

That's absolutely terrible to hear people are writing things on her wall. Bullying of any kind has no place in the world. She's simply a 17 year old girl that's dedicated herself to this sport and on the night it mattered most had the skate of her life.

I can't say I agree with the placements, or that I understand how the judges scored the programs, but she delivered and skated with excitement and passion. Yuna herself said she didn't have that desire for the Olympics this time around and you could kind of see it. Gorgeous as she is. For me, after two nights of skating Carolina was the best. Her sp should have sailed above the others and I thought she put together the most complete evenings of skating.

I also think during the Olympics it is sometimes valuable to hear what non skating fans have to say about what they see. Their knowledge is few and far between but sometimes it helps get past all the minute details and actually see the performance. So far I'm hearing from non skating ubers that Mao had the skate of the night (I still haven't seen it), but of the top 6 Adelina seems to have the majority of people's votes. Also Carolina was the other OMG moment of the night.

Personally I liked Carolina best of the top 6. And also knowing the scoring system I think relative to Adelina she should have been scored higher both nights. But I understand how people could watch Adelina and say THAT was the best.
Thank you so much for understanding, very well said.
I only follow figure skating when it's Olympic, so I am kind out of tune with most members here. In my country people do not practice figure skating, you know. It's just like this for every 4 years.
Maybe because I am not a fan of any particular skater, I find myself enjoy the result more than most of you. What I total dislike is, when I say I like Adelina better than Kim, I got quoted and negative comments. I can't lie about what I like. I was rooting for Kim 4 years ago, now it's time to move on another skater, simple as that.
I feel terrible that people are bullying Adelina for getting the gold, it's the judges' decision, not her. She must have practiced all day for years just to get near the Olympic dream. There is nothing wrong with that.

...And then I though, maybe Yuna fell like, thrice, on all combos.

AND SHE DID NOT.

Yeah that's the shocking part. She did NOT fall..... lol But when Yuna kinda landed hard on her Lutz, Russians went WILD and they cheered.

How pathetic. But Yuna just smiled and performed even better afterwards though.

Yuna Kim just got robbed wow Adelina was ranked as low as 16 over the past year and now they say that a clean performance is worthy of 149? The judges were so blatantly giving her points so Russia could get gold its a real shame. Ive always said that Yuna Kim's greatest weakness is her nationality coming from South Korea where we had no one in figure skating and zero interest in it before Yuna this has worked against Yuna her entire career. Imagine if her nationality was one of the traditional figure skating power countries........

If Yuna was American, Sandra, Johnny, Tara and Scott will be going nuts.

In other words, Sotnikova's 'fire' justifies higher PCS all across the board. But no, the fact that she showed very good attack and energy doesn't suddenly make her edges and flow better than Kim's. It doesn't make her posture, carriage or lines better either and it doesn't make her movements more precise. It doesn't make her move in time with the music and it doesn't make her have choreography which reflects the musical phrases and has style and character appropriate to the music chosen. Yes, she satisfied the 'Projection' criteria of PE very well, I give her that.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

I think Yuna was hurt by not doing the Grand Prix. I know it wasn't her fault, but the judges had no chance to see her programs and she had no chance to get feedback or build up a scoring precedent. The general consensus, among fans at least, was that her long program was not up to her usual standards. Maybe she could have made a switch, like Carolina did. But I'm not really sure how she could have improved her technical score. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be...

This. I. totally. agree...

If anything, this nonsense is not due to Yuna's GP w/d.

...Because, if that was the case, that means Sotnikova somehow entred like, 200 GP just this year to make that unique exposure advantage. But we all know that every non-Russians who entred the last GP just as much as her did not benefit like her.

ISU, or Russia, whichever, replaced Figure Skating with a different F something Skating.

eta: Figure to Fun............................................................... funny, isn't it....

I never said Putin controls figure or directly influences the outcome, but he hoped for this mess and articulated its embodiment, and when I said Putin, I suggests his cultural influences, and criticizes the judges as an extension of his Russia, the cultural Russia. Adelina, though I cherish her skating, never was and is a gold contender except for those judges whose eyes are Putinisitc red and chauvinistic fervor emboldens their criminal instinct to manipulate this over 100 year old sport as they please given a slightest hint. I will not fault you for your favor or opinion however, if you don't see this fraud, you'd better believe Putin is an incarnate Christ.
