2015-16 Grand Prix assignments

Regarding Mirai not getting US Classic.

I get the strong impression that Max Aaron is concerned with getting international experience (a disproportionate amount of his experience has been North American) and I suspect that is why he is not at US Classic. So my guess is that Mirai Max and TomZ all know which Challenger B that they will be doing. I suspect Mirai is already lined up to do the same one as Max and we will learn of it soon. Traveling with your training mate and keeping as normal as possible and keeping your coach well rested just makes sense.

We only have the announcements for one event. Nebelhorn is next - I am expecting that to be Team Koro fest. Ondrej Nepela is next followed by Finlandia. Mordovian is likely too close to Skate America to be ideal - So I am guessing team TomZ (just does not sound as good) will be a presence at one or the other.

I am not going to fret for Mirai for at least a few more announcements.

Based on 2013-2014 performance, Karen deserved two GPs, Mirai did not.

Karen won two medals on the 2014-2015 JGP and was first alternate for the JGPF
Karen won bronze as a Senior at 2015 US Nationals
Karen represented the US at JW 2015 and finished 8th
Karen was 25th on the ISU 2014-2015 Seasons Best list with 169.71

Mirai finished 5th at the 2014 US Challenger Classic
Mirai finished 6th and 4th at her two 2014-2015 GP events and ranked 14th overall
Mirai finished 10th at 2015 US Nationals
Mirai was 33rd on the 2014-2015 ISU Seasons Best list with 165.88

2014-2015 was the first season in many years that Mirai failed to medal at an international event. Her record shows that she is not on an equal footing with Karen when it comes to international assignments for this season.

BTW Karen got the nod for the 2015 US Challenger Classic because she was the 2015 US bronze medalist (Mirai got it last year because she was the 2014 bronze medalist).

Yes that makes sense. Hopefully she does get some experience before nhk!

What I meant was both are strong skaters. Both are deserving. BOTH. Based on nationals and junior grand prix last season, karen deserved the spot. based on collegiates and karen's rough performance at glacier falls, Mirai deserved it. It's debatable as to which one outweighed the other. It was not a simple decision. But anyway, what's done is done and it isn't worth it to continue. I'm excited to see karen have two solid grand prix skates, and I'm excited to see Mirai at nhk. It seems as StitchMonkey pointed out that Mirai and Max will be doing a senior b outside the US, which makes sense. Good luck to both of both of these talented ladies! :)

I think we'll see Mirai at some Senior Bs, so I'm not concerned about her not getting SA. Tom Z will campaign on her behalf. She needs to build on her momentum from Collegiates and I would imagine he doesn't want her on the sidelines until NHK and Nationals.

This is a quote from Mirai in late July.
"I did really well in the short (program, at the Broadmoor Open) and I made a couple little mistakes so I want to try to get myself out there as much as possible, so I can show the judges that I'm willing to do whatever it takes," Nagasu said. "Hopefully they (will) send me to Senior B. There is an open spot for Skate America that the girls who only have one Grand Prix event are fighting for, so Collegiates is my next event and then hopefully I will have a Senior B (event) where I can show my improvement." - See more at: http://www.lakeplacidnews.com/page/content.detail/id/523743.html#sthash.4nZNFKpV.dpuf

I hope she is participating in some of Champs Camp since she seems to have missed the first couple of days due to other commitments.

she posted something on snapchat that she was back in colorado springs with max I think after leaving for an event, and her website says that she will be at champs camp. I don't think Tom Z wants her on the sidelines either. This season seems to have started on a better foot for her, and hopefully it will only go up from here!

Mirai did Finlandia a couple of years' back, I think? I do wonder when we will get announcements for the Senior B's?

She went to Finlandia in 2012 and 2013. Closing date for Finlandia entries this year is not til about 8th September so no announcement until after that... but Nebelhorn entries are announced now - and Mirai is listed...

Thanks - also about when Finlandia announcements can be expected. :)

Forgot to add above that Mirai was at Champs Camp yesterday.

I had copied her tweets yesterday about Champs Camp into the Champs Camp thread.

Well, Ross was sixth at Nats and four guys ahead of him already have 2 assignments (Jason, Josh, Max and Adam) and Jeremy is not competing in the GP series this season. He also won a senior B in the Challenger's series and finished second in another, so I think he is a worthy choice.

I hope they will give Timothy a Senior B though.

Well said dorispulaski. Go Ross!!!

Agreed indeed. Both Ross and Karen definitively earned the TBA spots over the others vying for it.

I'm a huge fan of both Timothy and Mirai skating though! If they really are showing momentum and improvement.... Then I look forward to seeing them bring it at regionals and sectionals and international Bs.... And of course, nationals!! If they do well at nationals 2016, then they can earn the right to more stuff next year, just like karen and Ross already have!

Wow. This is the only thing I'll say about Nebelhorn because I don't want to hijack the thread any further but looking at the line up for ladies: Alaine, Kaetlyn, Alena, Courtney, Mirai - it's a lot of ladies who I think are probably looking to change their narrative going into this new season. I'll be excited to see how they all do and who can rise to the occasion.

It could be a great opportunity to build some momentum going into the grand prix.

If a skater wins a Senior B in the Challengers series, they get on the list for filling GP vacancies. That is how Dornbush got 2 slots last season. So your favs who win on the GP may yet make the GP.

Agree with your point that a Challenger win is a boost for getting a GP assignment.

But Dornbush is not an example. His two GP assignments in 2014 were announced as part of the mass GP unveiling in June.
