2015-16 State of U.S. Men's Figure Skating

Max did a 4S-3T.

Great to see the jumps back in form. He's leaving points on the table for everything else, both in bv and goe.

PCS solidly in 37-38 range (though closer to 39 here).

Glad to see him bounce back from TEB. He's made such improvment. But, I was looking at ISU high scores and he still needs another 10 points to be a contender. Where are they going to come from? Unless your name is Sotnikova you just don't grow +10PCS overnight. SNAP!!

Max has just laid down a new PB at Tallinn.

TES 48.18
PCS 38.85
TOTAL: 87.03

Jumps were absolutely flawless. 4T-3T, massive 3A, effortless 3Lz. Spins were okay, FSSp was a little wild but he dragged it back.

Yeah, I caught my breath at that spin. Still, it was an excellent skate.

He needs to make the team. Let's keep some perspective. He can do more than that, but qualifying for Worlds alone would be a win for him this season.

Though, sadly, the contenders are certainly capable of earning in the 80's. And 70's. As they seem determined to show us. Maybe so we will appreciate them later in the season?

Strongly agree that making the World team is a goal unto itself for Max. From that point of view:

Among the U.S men, Max (so far) has the highest ISU SB for the SP.
[What's shown on the list is his SP score from Skate America. And his SP score in Tallinn was slightly higher.]

On the ISU PB list, Max is the top U.S. man, except for Lysacek and Abbott.

I don't want to jinx Max. Other U.S. men will have chances to surpass him this week and next week and ...
But at this point, Max is holding his own among the U.S. men. I'll take it :).

I don't mean to sound complacent. No doubt Max will continue to work hard throughout the season to keep increasing his PCS.

Oh wow, he's doing 4t in the SP now? And as his combo?

:o: No, sorry, that was my typo. Not sure where it came from - everywhere else I've written it properly as 4S-3T.

There are easily 10 points available to him if he can get all his spins and steps to level 4. He got this score with a level 2 camel-change-camel, a level 3 flying sit (frankly I'm still ten different kinds of astonished that he not only saved the spin but still got a level 3 for that one) and a level 3 step sequence. (He got a level 4 for the final spin.) If he could up the sit and the steps to fours and the camel even to a 3, along with the bit-by-bit creep of his PCS, he could easily be mid-90s by the end of the year.

Congrats on Max's SP at Tallinn! I'm looking forward to video. Good luck to him in the LP.

Ask and ye shall receive! Warning: level of adorable when Max hugs the flower girls may induce cavities. :luv17:

Forgive my confusion. When did this happen? Was he always planning to skate back to back like this? I'm completely lost.

Last night at the Tallinn Trophy in Estonia. I believe he was added to Tallinn a few weeks ago.

The LP is tonight :)

He was Spectacular. Is Phillip Mills who works with him?? He needs a HUGE Muffin Basket from Max. Max could always jump but, that had real feeling behind it. Bravo to his team......I hate the phrase "It's a miracle but...............Awesome.

Spectacular is just the right word, mrrice! Phillip Mills is his choreographer - that's Mr Mills there in the kiss and cry with him (Tom Z probably hurried home to be with his sectionals skaters).

Also, I know Max's quads get the most attention, but can we talk about that triple Axel? Holy toledo!

I know.......The flow and deep knee in that landing was............ This has seriously made my entire day....All the bad stories on the news and all the griping over TEB. This puts a smile on my face. Thank you for providing that clip......

FWIW, Helsinki, Finland is only a one-hour ferry ride away from Tallinn, so I'm willing to give some grace on that one. :)

That's so adorable! He seems to be really personable and friendly to all. A good quality in skaters (well, everybody). :D

I just re-watched Max's SP and I can't say enough how much he has improved. He's even better than at Skate America. One of the hardest things for male dancers to learn is to keep their shoulders down when they use their arms ( Port de Bras ) sometimes referred to a "Gesturing" In that area alone, Max has grown by leaps and bounds. Seriously, I don't think of National Champions winning most improved awards but, Max deserves one for his new look.

Good Morning All, I just watched Max's LP from Tallinn and all I can say is, He's getting there. I enjoy him and more as I see him this year. I must admit that when Josh is around, I don't pay much attention to any other skater. ( Except Misha Ge ) ;) Is it just me, or does Phillip Mills look like "My Stepdad Gary" from the Jimmy Fallen Show. :laugh2:

Great job from Max last night. He really fought through that. Looked quite unstable but he wasn't the only one!

TES 88.93
PCS 77.20
TSS 165.13

TOTAL: 252.16

Of note is that he got level 4s on all spins and steps except the final combo spin (he got a 3 for that one) and +GOE on every element except for the 4S fall (obviously) and the first 2A (which was quite messy).

Black Swan Gladiator!

I completely agree that he's improving, but I do like his SP better than his LP.

There are things I'd change about the choreography in the SP, but probably can't be that way because of the requirements and time constraints. I really want his 3A to come just a few seconds later so it's hitting the end of the crescendo rather than where it is now, but I accept the fact that it probably isn't possible within the confines of the SP's requirements. There are a couple of other places that I feel like the musical highlights aren't used to their potential, and it's holding me back from really loving this program.

I think what it really boils down to is that I need something more from both of these programs, and some of that "more" is difficult to quantify.
