2015-16 State of U.S. Men's Figure Skating

No offense, but IMO, the analogy is weak.
Nathan and Jason both competed at both the Broadmoor Open and at Glacier Falls.
So they've both played in the exact same "preseason games."
(I do agree that their goals for the preseason games prob. were not the same.)

To me, the one objective difference is that Nathan already took part in the USFS ISP camp and Jason still has Champs Camp ahead of him.

(Stupid question: What does OTAs stand for?)

Goggle tells me:

Recently the NFL has let teams have off-season training sessions, officially called "organized team activities" (OTAs). Many teams use the OTAs to help develop players and make them better. These training sessions are in late April and early May.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

My analogy to the training activities was simply that how far along Nathan and Jason are with their programs, and thus, their readiness to compete - is very different, so there's not much point in comparing their results right now. The only thing you can say at this point is that Nathan has a very secure 4T and Jason doesn't.

Well, it doesn't seem like Jason's axel is very secure either. As far as security of the quad, it's not like Jason is rotating his quad and making an error, he's possibly << his quad (< at best) which is a huge issue. Some skaters (e.g. Takahashi) were able to get away with it because they've got enough PCS, but if Jason is looking to win GP events and make the GPF, he will need at least a fully-rotated attempt, otherwise he's docking himself at least 8 points.

Although it seems Jason is prioritizing having a lovely program first and foremost (which is great because that's why we love him) so whether the quad comes or not is a moot point - he'll likely be one of those skaters who doesn't win the big prizes but is remembered more for how great a skater they were. Hopefully he gets a quad though and actually becomes a contender.

Chen is very much on his way - I'm impressed with how quickly and reliably he's gotten his quad.

Probably the best football comparison (though still not perfect, cause I don't think Nathan will go this way: But it's like the Oakland Raiders (sorry fans) beating the Seattle Seahawks in the preseason last year. The later went on to the Super Bowl, while the former went 3-13.

I will disagree that Nathan only has the quad. While Nathan's performance skills are still in development, his programs are well-choreographed and he has decent transitions, good skating skills and speed. He's not just all-jumps.

And he has some cool moments performance wise -- I think his Smooth Criminal footwork in his SP is excellent -- he really is dancing through it not just doing footwork.

I think the errors on the 3A is very much reflective of integrating the quad and new programs and less that the jump isn't secure. I also think the quad is a lot farther along than his summer comps indicate.

Jason doesn't seem to be one who will settle on being a "lovely skater" either. Let's remember in the 2012-2013 season he went from being beat by Boyang Jin earl in the jGP with no 3A, to winning the FS at Jr. Worlds with two 3As and a record score (for junior men) that lasted for a year-and-half later in the season. Likewise, he also went from getting beat by Max Aaron and Adam Rippon in the GP to beat both of them for that Olympic berth several months later.

Still Chen put down the gauntlet.

Nice jumps Aleksei!

I would expect no less from a former Mishin student.

FWIW Aleksei is competing as a junior nationally and internationally, so he's not quite in the mix for the immediate discussion regarding the senior men, but definitely somebody to watch for the future.

I'm trying to recall, does he have any JGP events?

@Mrs. P - sorry, I wasn't trying to say that the only thing Nathan has going for him is the 4T, just that Nathan clearly has a very good 4T right now and Jason doesn't.

@canadianskaterguy, Nathan popped one of his 3As in this competition, so does that mean his 3A isn't secure either? I agree with Mrs P that Jason's 3A problems have to do with adding the quad. In his last 2 ISU comps, 5 of his 6 3As were fully rotated with +GOE; one was downgraded. As to the quality of Jason's quad and what he's prioritizing and whether his PCS will ever be high enough to overcome a shaky 4T, don't you think maybe you're rushing to judgment a bit? Last season he was criticized for not trying the quad. So now he's tried it 3 times in comps and it doesn't look very good. Don't you think it's a little soon to say he'll never get it? And FYI, his PCS at his last two ISU comps was quite good - about 85 and 89 in FS.

I got to see him live at Midwestern Sectionals - Ilove him! He is at JGP Latvia

Agree to disagree.

BTW, I like both Nathan and Jason (as well as Max and Josh and Richard and Sean and ...).

I agree that Jason will be working very hard all season and that his mastery of his programs will increase :).
But let's not forget that the same can be said of Nathan and all the other men .

It's not as if everyone else's programs will remain in static form at this point and Jason will be the only man showing improvement by the time of Nationals.

The gauntlet metaphor is very apt, IMO :agree:.

Oh my golden, that counts 6 US men already. I just don't want to imagine how you are going to survive the final group of men's free skate at the US Nats come January. :drama: ;)

When was the last time American boy on the world podium? Johnny in Sweden in 2008? No, Evan in LA in 2009, of course. Long overdue anyway. This season's Worlds is in Boston. Good luck to all American boys! :cheer:

Video of Max Aaron working on his stroking exercises :). From TSL's visit to the World Arena:

Wow. I am biased, but I really am impressed. Go, Max!

Hi, deedee!
Yes, too many U.S. men are very easy to like.
Not to mention men from other countries, LOL ...

Good to see these Junior US men landing quads already which they will need in the future. For some reason it seems like the top American men usually don't have the quad unlike the Russian or Japanese men and it's been that way for some time.

Copying the post below from the Josh Farris fan thread:

This is either good news or no news, but I believe Josh is skating around in this TSL clip of Max Aaron: https://instagram.com/p/6VOW9SqEOd/.

It could not be him (maybe Colorado Springs is the place to skate for tall, thin, brunette guys), but if it is Josh, at least he is well enough that he can skate. He may be completely recovered or only able to do limited things right now, but at least it wasn't an injury that is too severe that he is completely off the ice.

I think musicfan is correct that the other man is Josh :).

It's hard to tell from the angle...but the excellent posture is very Josh-esque.

Now I am feeling cautious ... yesterday TSL did have photos of Jamie Wright ... but I still am hoping that Josh is in the video with Max.

I feel like I'm on CSI: Figure Skating. I'm combing through the World Arena content they've posted thus far to see if any better views of this mystery man come up. No luck so far.

Thx, andromache .

The Jamie Wright photos were only on Facebook, I think. To my eyes, his hair looks longer than the mystery man's? But am not sure that Jamie can be ruled out .
