2015-16 State of U.S. Men's Figure Skating

My first thought is of course to wish Josh the best and hope that he skates his best this season.:cheer:

My second thought is thank heavens he and his team (and perhaps USFS) takes concussions seriously. Unlike some competitions ...::slink:

Yes, this also crossed my mind.

I'm actually quite optimistic about this one. It sounds like they all took it quite seriously from the moment it happened. Naturally he'd be off ice for a couple of weeks while he recovered. Maybe a couple more. Wouldn't want to take a brain that's been shaken up and subject it to high impact rotational jumps and spins too soon.

I'm sure Josh will be fine and ready and raring to go at the start of the season.

Some love from USFSA for Ricky, Ross and Tim, as they have been assigned the SLC Classic:cheer2:

Thoughts?

Alex Johnson has been added to the Team USA roster for SLC, per the ISU link below for all entries.

And Sean Rabbitt :) is listed as a substitute.

(For the sake of old times, I will mention that the ISU list includes Lukas Kaugars, in his first international comp skating for Latvia.)

:agree: Agree with both your first and second thoughts.

ETA:

Max Aaron and Grant Hochstein are going to Nebelhorn.

Sean Rabbitt and Jordan Moeller are the subs.

So am I to assume that Josh's arm cast had nothing to do with the concussion and in fact he likely has sustained two different injuries this off season? Or did he double whammy himself at the same time.

Based on the chronology of what we know, my two cents are that it is a plausible assumption that Josh's arm injury had nothing to do with the concussion. Just my two cents.

(I already have been a broken record recapping the bits of information that we know, so will refrain from doing so again here ;).)

Poor Joshua, He is so injury prone. I hope he's resting well now so that it doesn't do any lasting damage. So many of my favorites, in fact, all skaters are in constant danger of injury. :hopelessness:

I believe the arm/shoulder injury had something to do with one (or both) of the falls he had at Worlds.

On a different topic, the cooking class that the guys at Champs Camp went to looked like it was fun. I bet Ricky and Adam are fun to cook a meal with in the kitchen.

Hoo boy, this is how rumours start. I'd like to just clarify/correct this.

First, as far as we are aware, Josh never had a cast on his arm. What we saw in fan photographs was a sling, and not a very serious-looking one at that. These pictures appeared about a month after Worlds. At the time, Josh was skating in shows, but had fallen on it during the show. Coupled with Josh's own remarks at Worlds that his shoulder hurt (unsurprising), it is probable that the sling was a precaution.

Second, several weeks after the sling photographs, we have footage and photographs of him on the ice, displaying doubles to a group of students, and helping to coach at a camp. We can draw from this that at this time, he did not have the concussion, because he is on the ice.

He withdrew from the Sun Valley show on 25 July "due to injury", though it was not specified what that was. However, on 19 July, he had retweeted promotions for the show, indicating that he had every intention of being there. So now we have the earliest probable date range for his concussion, which would be somewhere between 19 July and 24 July, when he was replaced for Sun Valley. HOWEVER, just as equally, this may not have been the concussion, and may have been a precautionary withdrawal.

Even if this was the concussion, it is still only a month since that date range, well within a timeframe for sensible recovery. Almost certainly we can guess that he sustained it prior to TSL's visit a week ago as he was not in any of their footage or material.

He and his team seem to be treating it sensibly and seriously, and I'm glad of that - I'm sure that when he steps out at Skate Canada he'll be at 100% health and ready to fire :)

We can all hope so! ;)

While wishing Josh all the best, and so glad that he is taking post-concussion care seriously, I do need to say that the fact that his arm was in a sling rather than a cast does not mean his arm issue, whatever it was, was not serious. My mother had a broken arm that never healed and for which she eventually underwent surgery. For the entire tme that the best hand and arm specialists in Philadelphia were treating her (over six months) her arm was in a sling. No cast. Serious arm injuries can be evidenced by a sling.

That said, we have *no* idea why Josh's arm was in a sling. Which is why we are all speculating madly....:slink:

FWIW, in Josh's case, we know that he performed in a show in mid-April; and that his arm was in a sling in post-show photos. The sling has not been seen since -- and we have had a few subsequent glimpses of Josh: a video showed him on ice giving a jumping demo in early June; etc.; etc.

Abbott to take 2015-16 season off from competition
Four-time U.S. champion to assess future plans, perform in shows

The four-time U.S. champion did not register for the 2015-16 U.S. qualifying season (the deadline for which was Tuesday, Sept. 1), meaning he has opted not to compete at the 2016 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

... He did say that he will maintain his eligibility, should he choose to return.

... Abbott told icenetwork in June that he was skipping the Grand Prix Series in order to focus on the U.S. championships and trying to make the world team.

Abbott said he will still compete as part of Team North America at the Japan Open, Oct. 3 in Saitama

ETA:
Not sure whether new or not, but Jeremy's name no longer appears in any USFS Team Envelope.

I imagine we can interpret this as an unofficial retirement statement. He's almost 30, he's not getting any younger, and the young ones are getting better.

I seriously doubt will see Jeremy competing again. Don't know why he doesn't just come out and retire instead of dangling that hopeful carrot out there that he'll be back next year. Agree that he isn't getting any younger and the young ones are getting better. It also seems to me that if Jeremy hasn't conquered the yips in big competitions by now - he never will. He has a good Nationals, takes a place on the World Team ahead of someone else, and then bombs. I hope he continues to choreograph or whatever it is he aspires to.

I am thinking he is thinking of doing a Rachael Flatt and coming back to say good by in 2018, an Olympic year. That would give Jeremy 10 trips to nationals and would not be the worst way to go out.

Vincent Zhou will make his senior debut at 2016 Nats, per Tom Z's blog re JGP Bratislava:

BTW, as noted in the SLC thread: Alex Johnson has disappeared from the SLC roster (he was quietly added and then quietly removed a few short days later).

ICYMI, the link to the Champs Camp behind-the-scenes video:
https://youtu.be/guMbGzw6LwY (2:02 in length, published Sep 3)

All the U.S. men at Champs Camp are seen in the off-ice parts of the video.
(So happens that Adam is the only U.S. man seen in an on-ice snippet.)

Isn't Vincent only 14? Seems a bit young to be skating against the Senior Men at that age.

Totally agree about Vincent being too young. I wish they would keep him in juniors for a couple more years. He's been off the ice with injury more than he's been on the ice. Give him a chance to mature both physically and choreographically. (is that a word?)
