2015 Japan Open

Russia is clearly the strongest nation in across all 4 disciplines yet they keep losing these team tournaments like WTT and JO... I wonder if Russia will win again in 2019

I don't think Russia is the strongest nation across the 4 disciplines when it comes to the elite "team" events(WTT + Sochi Olympics)... I think it's probably 1. USA 2. Canada 3. Russia(though very close) and I think this is what most thought going into the 2018 Olympic season. The issue is that Russia really brought it when it mattered in 2014.

I was talking about this edition where there are no Russian men. It was THIS, rather than THESE.

JO is the competition which is judged by the international judges,
but still a show for the Japanese audience.
That is why they do not have pair and dance competitions since Japan does not have good pairs and dancers.
Current top Russian male skaters are still not well known to Japanese general public, or not die-hard type fans.
So they were not invited.
In other words, the promoter needs skaters with big names to get the big rating,
and current Russian top male skaters are not them.
Does it make a sense?

Yeah I get it  but Antonio also referred to WTT where the 4 disciplines are involved, that's why I also talked about pairs and ice dance. The "this rather than these" thing was because I originally wrote "these JO" but it was a typo, I meant "this (edition of) JO". I talked about the Russian guys because he talked about Russia even before the Russian girls took the ice, so I was kind of "wait, they haven't even started and there are no guys for Russia (this time)"

I took the average placements for all 4 disciplines in the 2015 World Championships, and of course I only did 2 instead of 3 because not everyone had 3 in each discipline. And when I ran the averages, it turns out Russia had the lowest average (aka, they had the highest placements), then the USA, then Canada.

predictions for the ladies event? what place realistically do you think each will finish? what place do you want them to finish in your dreams?

EUROPE: SOTNIKOA, TUKTAMYSHEVA
JAPAN:MIYAHARA, ASADA
NORTH AMERICA: GOLD, WAGNER

Overall I'm really excited! It's too bad that most of us can't watch the event though...

anyone on here from the US but have a fave skater from another country? I'm the biggest Mao fan ever and i sometimes feel guilty for not supporting our US girls like i should. anyone else have similar feelings?

I would love to see a top 3 of

Mao
Gold
Sotnikova

but then I love ALL these ladies so impossible to say.. Based on previous early season consistency maybe something like

Miyahara
Tukt
Wagner
Asada
Gold
Sotnikova
