2016-17 State of Russian Ladies skating

Can anybody tell if Konstantinova has earned herself 2 Grand Prix assignments by being 6th at the Russian Nationals?

The only people who will earn 2 spots are those who place in the top 12 at Senior Worlds. One spot is guaranteed to those in either the top 24 World rankings or the top 24 Season Bests. Right now Stanislava is 22nd of the SB list. There are people below her who can knock her out of the top 24 unless she makes Junior Worlds where she will get 1 more shot to top her current SB. But more than likely she will at least get 1 GP as she is ahead of Sima by 10 pts and Julia by 20 on the SB list. But who knows with the Russian fed and who they will politic for. Spots are getting very few as the juniors become age eligible.

ETA: And then you have to remember Russia only can have a max of 18 spots on the GP. There are 8 age eligible girls ahead of her not including Julia and Sima. If 7 of those will get 2 (Med, Rad, Pogo, Sots, Tukt, Zag, Polina), that only leaves 4 more spots split between Julia, Stanislava, Leonova and maybe Sima. And then Leonova is guaranteed 1, so now we have 3 spots. But if Stanislava can stay in the top 24, she will get one of the 3 remaining spots.

Will Adelina Sotnikova qualify as a "come-back" skater if she wishes to compete in GP next year? It's getting so crowded up there... :slink:
Gutted for Alisa Fedichkina, actually. Given the current situation she has very slim chances of getting even 1 senior GP spot next year -- and last year she nearly beat Marin Honda at JGPF + was the bronze medalist Jr Nats (!!)

I wanna say this season was Adelina's last chance to qualify as a come-back skater. Then the question become are we sure Adelina even wants to do the GP? She could just opt out for some Senior Bs instead

It's so crowded, I don't know :hopelessness: With it being an Olympic season, surly the Fed would want Julia to have 2 spots but if she doesn't compete any more this season she will be behind Serafima in both WR and SB and behind Stanislava on the SB list so that seems hardly fair. Adelina has no SB and will drop below Stanislava on the WR list and so that would be hardly fair as well. I think Stanislava should have 1 (and really 2) and the other girls (Sima, Julia, Adelina) can fight for that host spot at Rostelecom. Sima being the highest should get it but we are talking about the Russian Fed so someone is going to draw the short end of the stick :slink:

I know it's a pointless comparison but...

With Evgenia's overall score at Nationals, she would have beat 20 men at Japanese Nationals and would be in the top 5. :laugh:

Also, on average across the entire comps, the Russian ladies scored better than the Japanese men.
 
In the views competion with US ladies thread if we add discussions of SP and FP in Nationals Russia has moved ahead: 280 thousand vs. 266. Well, it will last only till US Nationals.

Russian ladies are beasts!
 
So glad that Anna still has her Euros and Worlds spot. I hope she fights and really shows the Russian fed that she is worth the Olympic team. Of all the Russian ladies, I feel like she has the most balanced programs. She also has a mature factor I don't see in her home field and intensity when she skates.

I wish I could say I'm confident that Anna will do better internationally, but history has proven that others are always preferred, not only in Russia. She has to try extra hard. I fear for her spot on the Olympic Team. Even a World Podium finish won't help her.

Finland might be hostile towards Russian ladies as well. At Finlandia, Anna and Liza and Sima didn't score well at all.

Yeah and it pains me to see because I thought she stopped being the underdog after that World Podium finish with all the interviews she was getting with Evgenia plus her great performances on the GP. I was thinking maybe the judges will finally see her as a threat to Evgenia but guess not in the Russian Fed's eyes.

Is that the only competition left that is counted for SB (not including Euros and Senior Worlds)?

Yes. Spring senior Bs (or non-Challenger Senior Bs in the fall) are only to get qualification minimums and world ranking points. SB are earned at Challenger events and Grand Prix events which are all over with leaving only JW/SW/4CC/Euros. Which is why its important for her to try to qualify for Junior Worlds for a chance to increase her SB.

ETA: and you can get SB at the World Team Trophy but she is unlikely to get invited to that event.

So far Masha is having a good season debut: 2nd in France, 3rd at NHK and 5th at the finals. She is not consistently URing her jumps like for example Polina Edmunds or Rika Hongo in the past, but this is still a problem.

Anna Pogorilaya is what she is now thanks to herself but also the team behind her: in the past two seasons they found a new distinctive style for her, they made two good bets choosing Morozov and Ge as choreographers.

We don't know which Anna would have been at CSKA.

I hope not.

As much as i like her, she was overscored in my opinion: she doesn't have the stamina to sustain a completely clean free program, and her technique on the 2A is terrible.

Sofia Samodurova was better than her: better speed and posture, although her jumps are still tiny.
