2016-17 State of Russian Ladies skating

I'm tired of Leonova too. But she deserves respect. She is how old? 26-27? And still she somehow year by year qualify to top 18 Russians, moreover getting GP spots, like Artemova. She is really warrior, and if she feel in herself feelings to continue to skating, so why not...

Leonova says she is not going to finish her career

Good for her. I would imagine the atmosphere training in Rukavitsin's group must be part of what motivates her to keep going, even if her good performances are few and far between. But that's true for a lot of younger skaters, too. If she's still happy skating, then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Okay so I was bored and calculated the top 43 (minus Edmunds) plus Sakamoto, Tsurskaya, and Zagitova in World rankings and both Serafima and Julia will be out of the top 24. So no guaranteed assignment for either.

Serafima can't move into the top 24 even if she does a Spring Senior B and win it.

Julia could move as high as 20th if she does a Senior B and win it, but there are still at least 5 people who probably will pass her up due to Junior Worlds, 4CC/Euros, and Senior Worlds giving more ranking points to lower placements. If she doesn't compete any more, she will be out of the top 35.

Noooo! :sad4: I'm glad I was able to see her at Skate America a few months ago, I had the feeling she would probably never compete in North America ever again! :( Saw Julia last year, would've been nice to see her again this year but for the unfortunate WD.

Looks like next year's team will be Darth Medvedeva, Zagitova, Tsurskaya, and their mistress the Empress Tutberidze.

I mentioned in another thread, but thought it was interesting:

This is the first time ever 6 ladies broke 200 overall score at Russian Nationals. And that's even with several skaters missing, like Tsurskaya! Just a few seasons ago, none of the Russian ladies could reach 200. Progress...

I hope that all the Russian Girl's take inspiration from Maria Butyrskaya. She was considered over the hill by the time she won her world title in 1999. Alena Leonova makes me smile when I watch her perform and she still loves to skate. Good for her.

I am sick so I'm hoping someone will spoonfeed this to me:

Does this mean that Elena R. and Anna P. aren't going to Worlds? Or do the Russians do what the Americans do and pick their team based on other criteria? I know Tukt didn't go back to Worlds after she didn't win a place at Russian Nats. in 2015 despite being world champion but it seems like a lot of pressure on the other two ladies to get Russia its 3 spots for the Olympics.

Or it is it a wait and see and test skates kind of deal?

Only the top two at Russian Nationals are "guaranteed" a spot, but Zagitova is too young to compete senior.

Based on the past two season, I don't see a better second option than Pogorilaya.

Sotskova & Radionova may be fighting for that third spot though.

Oooh, I think I just assumed Sotskova would go and not Radionova. That makes things interesting

Thanks Sabinfire. My brain is pretty thick witted right now.

The Russians have so much depth in ladies right now. It's impressive.

I am sure it's Sotskova since she finished on the podium.

Yes, Sotskova is automatically in for Euros (she's in the top 2 of eligible skaters). Only Worlds is still available for Radionova but if Sotskova does her thing she should be fine for Worlds.

Sotskova is so consistent, it's hard to see her "melting down." But, it will be interesting if she gets called for URs again at Euros. Given Radionova's struggles lately, I'm not sure that even one or two URs would hurt Sotskova that much.

Still, I can't completely count Radionova out completely just yet.

Yeah, even with 2 in the free program at GPF she still scored 133+. But Radionova can always make her case at the Russian Cup Final. It worked for both Perkova and Pogo in the past.

Miss Sotskova is consistently URing her jumps. Her new coach might fool people at National level. But she will never fool international judges as long as Miss Sotskova is not Russian No.1. In fact, Miss Sotskova will never be Russian No.1 and she will always be punished at international level.
Sambo's ladies are just too much stronger than her. CSKA was wrong to reject Miss Pogorilaya a season ago. She has much less issues than Miss Sotskova.
