2016-2017 Grand Prix selections

Yeah, seems weird... although last year Max Aaron did win. But this year, the top America man at SA, Adam Rippon, is very unlikely to win over Boyang. And I really thought that federations do take skaters' preferences into account, but if SA just rejected Javier, then the whole wrold-chamption-can-choose-where-he-goes is BS.

I don't know whether that thing of USFSA rejecting Javier is true or not, but even as World Champion, he doesn't have full freedom to choose. For example, it was basically impossible for him to get COC or NHK with Boyang and Yuzuru as the other two medalists. But well that's due to host pick, and I don't think USFSA would have used one of their host picks on Boyang. However, I would dare to say that Jason and Adam have a better chance of medaling or even beating Boyang (w/ mistakes) than Javier (w/ mistakes)

I don't think so. I don't believe SA could reject Javi. Nobody could force him to pick CoR & France, the back to back events, he clearly had something in mind - on the same continent - planning to go home afterwards maybe we just don't know.

I have been going through the ice dance assignments with special attention to the Russian pairs and the events where Elena & Ruslan and Viki & Nikita will compete. I can see that Ruslena (Skate America and Throphee de France) and Bobrova & Soloviev (SA and Rostelecom) will finish before the first event of Vikita (Cup of China and NHK). Do you think that starting the first competition so late and performing with the knowledge of their (I mean Viki & Nikita's) national rivals' positions may influence the scoring or the quality of skating? Supposing both Bobrova and Soloviev, Ruslena and even Stepanova & Bukin (Cup of China will be their second event) do an excellent job, do you think the judges may be less generous with their scores? Or quite the contrary? Russian Nationals are held 2 weeks after the GPF and although it's the domestic event where clear leaders and the European's team are decided, I guess the judges scoring at the GP circuit may also somehow contribute to opting for one duet or other. I'd like to know your opinion :)

I think that you overanalyse that issue. I doubt that the results of other Russian pairs can influence the results of Sinitsina / Katsalapov as they compete in different events. It's not like there is the same judging
panel everywhere and there is no reason to assume that they may think "We were so generous two weeks ago to Ilinykh / Zhiganshin so we have to withhold Sinitsina / Katsalapov, they are Russian too so it's enough for them". This is what your anxiety implies.

I generally think that some people here have a habit of trying to find logical explanation and factorize in everything which leads nowhere.

It's interesting that Javier has done CoR for the past 3 years, and a different other comp with it: NHK in '13, SC in '14 and CoC in '15.

I would be surprised if Javier really wanted SA, as he is usually not as well prepared for his first GP event as he is for his second, and the earlier the event, the less well prepared he is. When he did SC in 2014, he had a fall and a doubled jump in his FS, and lost to Mura.

I can't imagine anyway why the "organizers" wouldn't want Javier at SA. I am going to SA and I would be thrilled to see Javier there. As it is, I am no fan of Boyang Jin (he has 0 choreography and just jumps, jumps, jumps), but will be rooting like mad for Shoma Uno, who is one of my big favorites. I'm hoping either Tim Dolensky or Alex Johnson gets the TBA slot.

Frankly, I would imagine they'd want to invite him because (1) he'd draw a bigger audience than Jin, and (2) the US men's medal chances versus Boyang (and Shoma) don't seem significantly better than they would be against Javi.

Well, with Jin the US skaters have more chance to medal than with Fernandez there. Jin can be "killed" with PCS....

Jin and Uno will be terribly "killed" in GOE and PCS at SA while they can't do it with Javier, even if he terribly messes up they just can't give reigning wc less than 86-88 in PCS, also they can't do nothing much in GOE. They can perfectly "manage" to give Jin 86 ish in clean SP and 170 ish in clean LP Clean Jason can hit that maybe even clean Adam with the help of home inflation.

Yeap this is more likely the reason. They want the best chance for their home skaters.

On the contrary to you, I'm no fan of Uno whose flawed jumps distract and make me shake my head over his gifted GOEs and PCS just because he has tried quads in any form. He must be thankful to his big federation while Jin has a weeker one only concentrating on pairs. Saying that Jin has 0 choreography is simply not true because his tango SP has not only enjoyable choreographic moves but also fabulous jumps, the later of which Uno can't have. If Boyang were like the "Quad King", Timothy Goebel who tested my patience, I wouldn't have become a fan of him, ever.

Interesting enough, a Russian blogger has broken down the top men programs, and it turns out that in the SP, Boyang has much less crossovers than Shoma. And in the Lp, the amount of transitions they did are the same... I'm not talking about the quality of the transitions and skating skills, but the numbers are the same... So the PCS gap between them is kind of not fair to me.

The organizers have NOTHING to do with the selection of skaters for the Grand Prix. Representatives of the federations pick the skaters, and the wishes of the top seeds are traditionally honored.
I doubt Medvedeva wanted SA again. She didn't want CoR, either. Those are the two events she had last year, so she probably wanted something different this time.

By organizers I meant the chief people in charge – in this case, USFSA. And we have no way of knowing what Medvedeva wanted. It’s not uncommon for skaters to choose to attend the same GP event.

On page 137 of Javier Fernandez’ thread, posts 2041, 2042, 2044. Other forum members have already explained why Boyang would be preferable for USFSA at SA. The posts I’m referring to explain the mechanics of these negotiations. And I had also thought before that the 1st and the 4th skaters at Worlds could go wherever they wished, but I learned that this is not necessarily the case. In fact, one of these posts was written in response to my question.

Jin's SP was palatable for its brevity. I was at Worlds in Boston, and Jin's FS tried my patience because all he did was jump from one end of the rink to the other, turn around, then jump back again.

Everything Tim Goebel did was marred by his awful posture.

Maybe you don't like Shoma Uno's flawed technique, but Shoma does relate to his music, and he knows how to present and sell his programs to the audience---that's why he gets such high PCS scores, and IMO they are well deserved.

To be honest i don't think Boyang is any better of a skater then Nathan Chen. In fact i think Chen is a better performer and has better skating skills he just needs to stay healthy to make his mark and he will climb up the ranks fast just look how it took only one year for Jin to be a top contender and already a medalist at Worlds.

Thanks for the response, but those posts are pure speculation without any supporting evidence.

And this is the hazard of assuming young athletes will be beatable the following season. More money. Better choreo. He could have a much better constructed FP next season.

Same can be said for Nathan.

Lack of reputation certainly didn't hurt all the Russian girls right up from juniors who have won most of the recent Skate Americas.

SA might as well invite the World Champions. Ashley defeated Elizaveta last season. Nobody [Edit: except Elena;)] defeated Evgenia. June predictions aren't worth the space they're typed upon.

Since these posts weren't qualified by "I think," "perhaps," etc. and are stated as facts, I assume they aren't speculation, but obviously it's up the authors of the posts to provide the provenance.

A clean LP from Boyang Jin would be well over 100 in TES, they'd have to give him like 65 in PCS... I'd kinda like to see that hapoen and the resulting inestigation...

Icenetwork reporting that Testa/Csolley have withdrawn from ther GPs. They are replaced by Törn/Partanen in Canada and Mansour/Ceska in France.
