2016-2017 Grand Prix selections

Does anyone think Mariah Bell has a chance at the SA pick? Or are they more likely to give Tyler Pierce a second spot?

She has a shot, but Tyler had a far better 2015-16 season. If that is their criteria, I think they'll give it to her. But they also often give the spot to a skater who had a great Nationals; this would strengthen the case for giving Tyler the spot but also put Bradie Tennell and Hannah Miller into the mix. Who knows?

I think she has a chance, but will need to really come out swinging at GF and possibly even a early Senior B.

I think Hannah Miller is the most likely to get it. Raf is doing a good job of showing that if you give him time, he has a plan. He made a comment about Hannah that his main hope is that both USFSA and her family give him the time he needs to work with her and produce something (he words). She had a poor fall season, but did great at Nationals. So it kinda is an argument the process is working and USFSA should at least stick it out and support them for the two years of the switch.

Bradie Tennell I suspect will stay JGP, and likely should stay JGP. She did well at nationals, but has some work to do still. JGP would be good for her, and two JGP assignments would likely be better for her than one senior GP.

I am still kinda hoping Angela Wang gets it to be honest. I feel bad for her last season getting derailed at TDF (fka TEB) so I would like to see her get to at least have a full GP this season since some idiots that wanted to blow crap up cheated her out of a full GP last year.

SA might as well invite the World Champions. Ashley defeated Elizaveta last season. Nobody [Edit: except Elena;)] defeated Evgenia.

We don't know that SA didn't invite the World Champions. They might well have. People are making assumptions and attributing all sorts of motives to federations that aren't necessarily correct.

Just FYI, I've updated the original post to include updates (for now there's only the Ice Dance one). I hope to update it constantly so you don't have to read through this thread.

How do I find what competitions Mariah is in like the senior B ones that you mentioned?

Great, Thanks! Why are some events such as GF not listed here? Or is there somewhere else that also includes these competitions?

Glacial Falls is not an international event, it is just a local USFSA event. The scores don't count for anything, other than maybe reputation/reference. Also skaters pick if they go or not (well mostly... any of the seniors could sign up if they choose to, but I am sure there are pressures) international events USFSA makes the assignments, the skater does not pick and choose.

As for a list this is ok

http://www.usfsa.org/events?id=84015
but includes a lot of stuff. It won't help you with skaters, but you could at least narrow it down by state if that is of help.

Kind of feel sorry for Gaby Daleman. She had a great showing at worlds last year and should therefore be seen as a medal threat in her assignments yet she will be hard pressed to be top 5 in either! IN fact in her 1st one I can see her being as low as 7th or 8th.

While I agree she could be 7th or 8th... she could also medal... there are some pretty big wild cards there.

Icenetwork reporting that Testa/Csolley have withdrawn from ther GPs. They are replaced by Törn/Partanen in Canada and Mansour/Ceska in France.

That's a pity! I really liked them and was looking forward to seeing them in the GP. I wonder why they withdrew from both events so far ahead of time? I so much hope it's not a serious injury. I checked on Google, but saw no recent news about/from them.

Jin and Uno will be terribly "killed" in GOE and PCS at SA.

Maybe JIN will be killed in PCS at SA (in the FS, his PCS was 72.58 at CoC and 76.52 at NHK to Javier's 91.52 and Yuzuru's 97.20).

But UNO skated last year at SA and in the FS, his PCS was 84.30 to Aaron's 81.30 and Brown's 85.36. In fact, Shoma WON the FS and Aaron eked out the win by just 1.52 points. Uno may have his technical flaws, but he stays in character and plays full out to the audience. Last year, the SA audience loved him, and this year's audience will for sure. I went to SA two years ago when SA was at the Hoffmann Estates arena, and there was a large group of Japanese fans in the audience. They will go crazy for Shoma and Mao.

Also note: At Worlds this year, Uno outscored Rippon in PCS in both the SP (43.57 to 41.76) and the FS (86.58 to 85.64). Jin's scores were 37.78 and 76.14.

Hmm...then we have to be sorry very many skaters...These assignments rather can mobilize her, and to be more beneficial than one can expect. How assignments work for a particular skater, it rather depends on skater's character, personality. Also, it is a process of continual growth and assignments have to not the same every year.

Gaby has two rather tough assignments: SA and TDF.

SA: Gaby was 9th at Worlds, behind Asada (7th), Wagner (2nd) and Gold (4th), but ahead of Kuchvalska (15th), Rodeghiero (16th) and Park (18th). Murakami is not as tough a competitor as she used to be, but she did have two 4th place finishes in the GP last year. Mai Mihara is making her GP debut after winning silver in her two JGP events last season and finishing 6th in the JGPF.

The two Russian ladies are unknown factors. Lipnitskaia was 6th in her first event and was 2nd after the SP at TEB, but last two years, the SP has been her strength and the FS, her undoing. She also did a Challenge where she was 2nd behind Rika Hongo, and a B event which she won, but against much easier competition; she was 7th at Russian Nationals. Sakhanovich had an excellent junior career, but faltered last year, finishing 7th in her one JGP event, 4th in her first Challenge event, and finally 2nd in her 2rd Challenge event, with a top score of 176+; she was 10th at Russian Nationals.

If Gaby can skate two clean programs at SA, she could finish top 4. IMO, she probably can't get high enough PCS scores to challenge Wagner, Gold and Asada.

TDF: Again, Gaby faces Asada and Gold from SA, along with Park. Added tough competition: Medvedeva. There are also two JW medalwinners: Higuchi (silver) and Sotskova (bronze), who are making their GP debuts, along with Tyler Pierce (6th at JW). Also competing: Yuka Nagai, Alena Leonova, Laurine LeCavelier, Mai Berenice Meite.

Top competitors are Gold, Medvedeva and Asada, but Higuchi and Sotskova can't be discounted as both are tough and very focused. A clean Gaby could finish as high as 4th but this is by no means assured.

Is there an official substitute list somewhere? And can skaters get a second assignment through a substitution, or just a first? Sorry if this is a stupid question. :)

The Seasons Best list is the substitute list. As the season goes along, winners of Challenge events get added to it.
Yes, skaters/teams with one assignment can get a second assignment.

In theory, hosts choses from the top 5 of the SB list from each category when they want to pick a replacement. Lately in the season scores from the Challenge events are added to the top 5.

I say in theory because last year the feds still did whatever they want and had some very odd picks.
