2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

If it's one thing that ladies Olympics 2018 has taught us, it's that getting the big medals is a matter of being in the right place, at the right time.

Don't forget - Being born at the right time.

It's such an advantage to be born at a year where your first eligible season is during the Olympic season. Take Lipnitskaya, Zagitova etc.

Elena Radionova is an opposite example. Born at the wrong time.

Never seen anyone spend such a short time as GOAT. Or can Medvedeva even be considered a former GOAT to begin with without an Olympic title?

Congrats to the Baby for the win. Was pulling for her, but have to admit my heart broke watching Med cry. Never seen her look like anything other than steel out.

Wonder what's going to happen at Worlds? Will Alina skip? If so, it is probably because she receives too many show invitations. But Evgenia does not really need another world medal. So Alina'd better go to Worlds, as you never know what's going to happen next year.

She'll have whole spring and summer for shows.
Can't imagine omitting your first Worlds being in top form with whole figure skating world lying at your feet. :)

Don't remind me :( - my favorite all along for PyeongChang was Elena R, but she peaked several seasons too early.

I am seeing Zagitova going to Worlds. She has not been before and has not Worlds Medal. I think Med will not go. She has lost two straight to Zagitova. She handled Europeans ok, but this clearly took a lot out of her.

Well, I know I was saying that backloading doesn't make that much of a difference. But here, Medvedeva missed a total of 1.56 points on failing to backload her first 2 jumps... Which would have been enough for OGM.

So I guess that sometimes it can be the difference.

Everything is important. Zhenya's little technical issues didn't allow her to get enough BV for the win.

I definitely think both will take part in Worlds. But I don't know how they are going to deal with this. It's always different thinking about it in advance but when this happens it could affect the relationships with their group. Hopefully not.

I do feel pretty bad for Zagitova though. She looked like it was forbidden for her to win or something. I think a skater should be able to feel unreserved happiness for an Olympic victory...

So happy with the outcome. Of course it´s sad to see Med crying, but imagine everybody in your country and even your trainers team rooting for your biggest competition and still delivering such a program in your first senior season.. She worked so hard and totally deserves this gold metal

Yep, Alina was checking her coach reaction all the time and... let's say I can understand Eteri's behaviour from human standpoint, but she acted straight unprofessionally in this. Too much is too much. :disapp:

Now, I read in sports.ru comments some crazy Rus fans want to protest the outcome. There is thin line between favouritism and idiocy, it seems. :palmf:

What, if anything, do the Russian fans have to say about Eteri? I understand Eteri being disappointed on Zhenya’s behalf but Alina celebrated by herself for quite a while which was sad to see. Do the Russian fans see a bias? Do they mind it?

At the next Olympics, none of the rivalry between Evgenia and Alina matters anymore. It things go as they are, it will be five Eteri's girls in top form, and which three will qualify depends on how they skate on the day of Russian National, and all the three at the Olympics will medal, and in which order also depends who skates best on that day. It will be a multiway rivalry in Eteri's group everyday, so in the end, they will just take it as norm.

We'll see. Sotnikova said the same thing and look how that turned out. Longevity is one thing a Russian lady doesn't have.

Medvedeva is not a one hit season wonder like Sotnikova, I'd be more concerned of Zagitova taking a Sotnikova retirement.
