But you have a good point there with a slight alteration: If Maria scores significantly low at GPF and the Nats (not making it to the top 4 for example) then they might say she shouldn't go because failure in two competitions shows her weakness not her being unlucky on a certain day etc.
Otherwise I don't see Polina getting the spot. To me it's more about Maria losing it than Polina getting it because Maria had done a lot this season to prove herself.

Well with a fair judging which means:

1) URs counted

2) mistakes and falls affects components too

3) fair use of GOEs

A clean performance from Sotskova (like her FS in France) could place 4th or even 3rd there, considering Miyahara is prone to URs and if you start to count them her TES drops quickly while Kaetlyn and Kostner are always making mistakes (Caro a little more consistent this season though), and even Higuchi has some UR jump here and there.

But they won't because japanese girls can succeed only with a lenient panel so she has to hope that all her competitors bombs which is not 100% impossible, but still unlikely.

Nationals -> CSKA has definitely an advantage so expect both Maria and Elena receiving the extra help, unless they bomb. Also i wouldn't be surprised to see a junior grabbing that bronze medal (which means nothing because the battle for the third spot will still between these three girls)

As of now:

Maria 45%

Elena 30%

Polina 25%

If Maria bombs GPF like a splatfest that could change everything.

Basing it on the scores this season, haven't Radionova and Tsurskaya been scoring higher than Sotskova?
 
As for junior grabbing a medal, i´m pretty sure it wont happen.
Fed will probably make sure the top 3 are the ones who go to the Olympics. Its not a big deal, but a national medal is also a medal, and losing to a junior at nats doesnt add to reputation

As for Stasya, if Fed wanted her at the olympics, she would have turned senior this season, like Zagitova did.
not making the JGPF doesnt help her either.
 
A thought - if that is the case, how do the athletes qualify? Keep the quota Russia had initially? Who makes the selection?

in fact Sotskova FS form France GP is not clean, yeah she does not get any UR or whatsoever in protocols, but she URed her 3S and solo 3Lz (both are clear in slow-mo) but the panel is overlooking them just like how panel overlook Miyahara UR in America. With a strict TP it can hurt everyone even Zagitova, sometimes her jumps is not really all the way around. Kaetlyn rarely UR but she tend to pop or fall in FS, Caro the same, Miyahara and Sotskova is the UR girl among others in GPF

I thought they said that Russians won't participate as neutral athletes.
And I suppose that the team event is out of question even if they decide to participate so.

Based on the SB lists, Polina is #8 with 210.19, Maria #9 with 208.78, Elena #10 with 206.82. It is very close between them. Polina's SB is higher than Maria's SB. But on Skating Scores.com, Polina's average score is 202.88, ranked #7 while Maria's average score is 202.20, ranked #9. Elena's average score is 194.85, #12

Sotskova just recently lost to Radionova in Shanghai and placed third. Sotskova is not a lock for that third spot - if anything it is a battle between the three - Radionova, Tsurskaya and Sotskova. The federation is going to play it smart and go with the one that they believe will be loved by the judges. All three have shown to be nutcases so hitting at Nationals is super critical because they aren't going to be saved by the judges this time around. Sotskova was saved by the judges last year at Nationals and then bombed Worlds, Radionova messed up Worlds two years ago and Tsurskaya bombed junior worlds. Lifelines are over - they have to earn it now.

I think the fact that Medvedeva and Zagitova are locks is more a testament at the level of the ladies behind them plus they're super good.
 
I think it would be wonderful to see Elena, Maria, and Polina be the Europeans team depending on the results of nationals, to corroborate that third spot decision.

Would you really deprive 15yo hard-working phenomenal girl of her first chance in life to win European title for some third int'l spot sparring? :shrug:
