Skaters are one thing, but the most hilarious word among Russian skating fans is "грибы" (greebi) - mushrooms.

The million ways they conjugate (decline?) and transform it to express their feelings about overscoring skaters makes me LMAO every single time. Obviously, usually it's a negative feeling, which makes it even better.


It's basically sth like:
"mushroomer" - frequently overscored skater,
"mushrooming" - overscoring,
"judges mushroomed hard" - judges overscored very much,
"no mushrooms today" - judging was fair today,
"she's always being mushroomed", etc....

Now it generally refers to overscoring that is due to Federations' behind-the-scenes politicking. Essentially, the Feds supply the judges mushrooms on behalf of certain skaters, the more mushrooms - the higher the overscoring. Top skaters of strong Feds usually are seen as the most mushroom-intensive, more mushrooms are provided for skaters skating at home, mushrooms can be moved between skaters of a Federation, it's this whole complicated system

While today is the correct translation, the word he is looking for could be a different one. It´s hard to tell without a sample, for non Russian speakers, words might sounds totally different, than they are actually written.

I listen very carefully to skaters and their coaches, I would have surely noticed it, if they had cewodnia as a common word in their conversation. Usually they do talk about how the athlete felt on ice, why the jump wasn´t so good, or the usual "good job, amazing".

There are two words I can think of that he is looking for. One is used in a Russian chant, I heard it all evening today - but I can not come up with a proper translation for that now.

The other is славно, which skaters usually reply when the coach asks them how they felt on ice. It means, ok, smooth. You spell is "sla-vna", which sounds totally different to "cewodnia"

Congratulations to Eteri with podium sweep. But that's exactly why I wanted to see Alena's skating the last one, to not spoil the whole picture. Also sad that no world records here.

Oh Trusova, I wish she could land these 4S in the grand prix events... Landing the UR one in Russia Cup seems like a complete waste now.

She said that she wants to also add 3A and do both 4S and 3A. At least she's ambitious!

There were talkings about clean landings at practice, but clean it's because of they think like that or they recorded it and counted down rotations? I mean, look at Kihira, she easily lands triple axels at practice. I didn't see any video of Trusova with clean quad. She has to do it at warm-ups, but she doesn't. She definitely has no enough rotation speed to do clean 4S, or at least to do it consistently, not once upon in millennium. But look at her gorgeous 3Lz in the short program. I wish she will learn 4Lz, maybe there she'll be lucky.

With the state of Trusova's 4S I'm not really sure if it's a great idea to include it in her programs(Though of course, it still is good practice). In Shcherbakova's case for instance she had absolutely no problems rotating it in the practice clips so adding it makes sense, but for Trusova it seems like a planned < which also significantly increases the risk of a fall.

One thing about Trusova though is that at least she isn't popping it, she really is going for it with everything she's got. I just hope she has it in her to actually rotate it this season...

it also has to do with the fact that mushrooms grow really fast

Congratulations to Stanislava! But what the hell... Did she EVER SHOW A CLEAN FREE PROGRAM? EVER? Sad about Tuktamysheva and Fedichkina. Pathetic scores.

Did Osmond skated clean her FS??? It's not about clean program to win anything

Just finally took the time to watch.

Daria Panenkova - she somehow lost about 3-4 points in PCS which she got in Gdansk. Jumps are very nice and solid. Still, she has to work on her skating skills.
Rika Kihira - sensational 3A+3T. That was amazing. But program overall bored me. Maybe going to North American choreographers, like Wakaba or Marin did, will help.
Sofia Samodurova - solid and average skating. She did many pauses before the jumps, don't remember it at other JGP stages. Too secure jumps, which even didn't help. Weak skating skills.
Anastasia Tarakanova - to me it was the best program of the whole event. Like the fresh air. Sensational skating skills, amazing plastic body and beautiful jumps. So powerful and freedom skating. And finally absolutely clean.
Alena Kostornaia - after Nastya's program, Alena's program wasn't look so great. Mistakes in the program. Sad. But she is really something. I can't express how I love her.
Alexandra Trusova - have to say her 4S looked not so bad, she rotated it but fell. She also improved her skating skills, I liked her step sequence. Also I noticed she started to do mistakes on her 3Lz+3Lo. She did mistake at one JGP stage and at one Russian Cup stage. And now here. She is loosing 1-1.5 points on that. Last spin was bad.

FYI. Russian fans use terms mushrooms/mushrooming only when they talk about PCS.

There are many other sarcastic terms in Russian fans vocabulary. For example:
flying stool - athletic lady with bad SS/artistry
fly swatter hands - when lady flails her hands too much (without particular reason)

To be honest i'm very excited about Alina's deserved win, but at the same time i'm starting to worry a little bit about Evgenia(even though Alina is my favorite). Alina is getting an insane momentum right now, and she's really getting close to the scores Evgenia usually posts. I would like Evgenia to be first at the Olympics and Alina to be second, it would be fair. Also it would motivate Alina to continue working and not end up like Yulia. Looking at how current juniors are doing, i don't think Evgenia's chances to win gold at next Olympics 2022 will be good.
