2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

To be honest i'm very excited about Alina's deserved win, but at the same time i'm starting to worry a little bit about Evgenia(even though Alina's my favorite). Alina is getting an insane momentum right now, and she's really getting close to the scores Evgenia usually posts. I would like Evgenia to be first at the Olympics and Alina to be second, it would be fair. Also it would motivate Alina to continue working and not end up like Yulia. Looking how current juniors are doing, i don't think Evgenia's chances to win gold at next Olympics 2022 will be good.

I agree but Alina's my No. 1. Gold isn't everything. Medvedeva will still be considered one of the greatest skaters without a gold medal. But right now, she's still a heavy favourite for the Olympic gold. For me, Alina is too perfect and I want her to win everything but if she doesn't it's ok. I'm just excited to see her at the Olympics. But I really want her to continue either way to 2022 when she'll still only be 19. I want to see her in other smaller competitions or in Russia. I want to go back to Russia in the next few years.

the Russian ladies are well disciplined, to me come out fighting more for it.

Because of so many good ladies skaters, they have to come prepared at each competition
to show what capable of like many time in the past in the U.S.

if they want that spot on their own world, olympic, european team.

No Tarakanova or Kostornaya in gala - what a shame.

I'm sure Trusova will be lovely but she's really the last of these who I'd like to see performing in gala. Well, maybe she'll prove me wrong...

Wow, the GP qualification dilemma is getting to be even more of a mess now...
Zhenia, Alina, Polina, Masha, and Elena are probably the only ones who ought to be fairly secure in getting 2 spots apiece = 10 spots
Then there are Stasya, Liza, Daria and Anna, who all are likely to qualify for at least 1 spot. Theoretically they can all get 2 if Russia gets the maximum of 18 spots, but it's unlikely that all host countries will invite 3 Russian ladies, plus also that would mean the Rostelecom host spot would be taken up by default by one of these ladies.
Since the next tier of ladies have also shown good year-over-year improvement in 17/18 vs. 16/17, and some of next year's new seniors with potential also have fairly close results with the above -- Sonya, Nastya Gubanova, Nastya Guliakova, and then also Sima if she continues to show improvement -- it makes sense to keep the host pick open to continue to incentivize them = 11 spots taken up total
That leaves 5-6 spots for 4 skaters, with some really tough choices to make. Anna and Liza have the track records and possibly also big enough fan base that they may get 2 GP invitations at the expense of the two rising seniors. Frankly the one I am concerned about is Dasha who has been fairly solid the past 2 years (only that other bigger stars have emerged), and that the fairness equation becomes questionable if she gets shunted in favour of Liza / Anna if the two continue to have doubtful form.

Lol, I was rewatching ladies GPF. Only 2 Russian ladies at GPF somehow looks unnatural to me...

FYI. Russian fans use terms mushrooms/mushrooming only when they talk about PCS.
I have heard it to refer to GOE too. And even forgiven edges and UR. Basically any part of the score that the speaker deems artificially inflated. Also "blinking" referring to the judges/tech panel "not noticing" mistakes (i.e. they must have blinked at that moment, even if it was 5 seconds long).

There are many other sarcastic terms in Russian fans vocabulary. For example:
flying stool - athletic lady with bad SS/artistry
Not just a lady, any jumper who is weak in essentially everything else.

fly swatter hands - when lady flails her hands too much (without particular reason)
"Windmill arms" seems to be more common.

Why aren't they in??

Because they wanted to pick Rika, Wakaba and Satoko instead, I guess.
*glares*
I'd rather see Nastya and Alenka
I didn't know that the podium wasn't automatically picked?

I guess, only those who took the first place in Junior competition can participate:

5 Alexei KRASNOZHON USA 1st Jr. Men
6 Anastasia SKOPTCOVA / Kirill ALESHIN RUS 1st Jr. Ice Dance
11 Ekaterina ALEXANDROVSKAYA /Harley WINDSOR AUS 1st Jr. Pairs
18 Alexandra TRUSOVA RUS 1st Jr. Ladies

Also, they are allowed to invite their local skaters. And they did: 7 Rika KIHIRA JPN 4th Jr. Ladies and 9 Mitsuki SUMOTO JPN 3rd Jr. Men.

It would be strange if Japanese organizators would invite Russian skaters instead of their owns.

Just finished watching JGPF ladies, and I gotta say, Trusova skates like a BOSS. No, she's not the most expressive or graceful, but gosh, she is fierce. I also like how she doesn't seem intimidated by Eteri at all. I hope she stays healthy b/c I think she will be a real threat in the years to come.

Yes, but it is ladies thread, so...

Overall, I found Junior GPs much more thrilling and exciting to watch than Senior GPs, which was extremely underwhelming this season due to the amount of injuries and withdrawals. Skate Canada ladies event should’ve been a sign for all of us.

Congratulations to Alina and Maria, so happy for them.

Right now I’m ready to put this GP season behind and anticipate the bloodbath that is nationals, I can’t wait for it.

A chance for a Russian sweep of the podium at Olympics. Absolutely. Maria is getting very high marks. Will keep doing the ugly tano because she’s not penalized for it. Better get used to it.😐
