2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

I think what’ll be so interesting about nationals is where the judges will place each skater in the standings. Do they go with the younger girls who medaled at the jgpf? How does radionova fit in here? Is sotskova still a favorite?

Tuktamysheva - World, European, GPF champion, multiple GP winner,
Pogorilaya - World, European, GPF bronze medalist, multiple GP winner,
Radionova - World bronze, European, GPF silver and bronze medalist, multiple GP winner,

will quite likely never put their boots on Olympic ice...

Olympics are not everything... I mean Liza's titles for example, are much more important than just going to Olympics and not medalling there. Really, Olympics are overstated, too political and too much feast for nothing.

Completely agree...plenty of skaters who were at the Olys have been completely forgotten already. And the best performances rarely happen there.

P.S. When you google-translate "Евгения Медведева планирует выступить на чемпионате России" google says "Evgena Medvedev(a) plans to speak at the Russian Championship", which is bogus, as"выступить" means "participate".

For me it's the abysmal TV coverage of the Olympics that puts a sour taste in my mouth.
Anymore it's the Parade of Nations that's my favorite part ;)
Just hope that we can see some great performances from the athletes - regardless of who goes.
 
It is such a shame to read that about Anna. I really love how she skates with abandon. But I am glad she is putting her health first. Wishing her a smooth recovery.

Interesting that Evgenia plans to compete... I hope she has rested enough and is not pushing herself too hard in order to compete at Nationals. I find it hard to imagine any serious objection to sending her to the Olympics even if she doesn't compete at Nationals, as she is such a strong favourite, but I wonder if any pressure was put on her to go to Nationals.

Very much looking forward to watching Nationals...

The curse of peaking in the middle of a 4 year cycle, I guess. With the bloodbath that is the Russian Ladies' field, it seems like each lady's chance for even getting onto the Olympic team was determined at birth-- if she's not 15 or 16 during an Olympic year, is there any point in her having Olympic dreams at all? Even Evgenia, at 17 years old, sometimes feels bizarrely old to me in light of the white hot junior talent in Russia, which is ridiculous.

That's reductive of course-- the reason the field is so packed is because there are so many ladies working their hearts out, and the Olympic title isn't the be all and end all of the sport. But still, when Pogorilaya and Radionova and Tuktamysheva were getting into serious skating, 10-15 years ago, they would have thought they'd have good chances at the Olympics of 2018, being only 18-20 years old. They couldn't know, at that time, that the girls just 2-3 years behind them were going to be so incredibly fierce.
 
Since the Russian Fed no longer have the power to decide who the skaters are going the Olympics (they can nominate names to the committee but the committee will ultimately the one to decide who are the skaters that will be invited) is placement at the Russian Nationals still important? I guess for euros yes?
 
These are the skaters who have been to Juniors competitions then Senior Worlds, Euros and GPs and until this day have no doping incidents. They have the advanatage to be invited to the OAR team since they have been tested more and in different levels of competitions thus proving how "clean" they are.

1. Leonova
2. Medvedeva
3. Pogorilaya (injured)
4. Radionova
5. Sotskova

Haven't been to Senior Euros or worlds thus lesser chance to "prove" they are clean.

1. Zagitova
2. Tsurskaya
3. Sakhanovich

My guess is that Leonova, Medvedeva and Radionova will get the 3 invitations from the committee unless they decide to follow what the RusFed(who some of the committee members hate right now) nominates which most likely Med, Zagi and Sotskova, I highly doubt they will follow what the Rusfed nomiates.
