2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

I find it disturbing that Eteri replies to "robot" accusations by "they are less than 45 kg". That seems very little for somebody over 13 years old. And while some may have teeny bodyframe... it is damaging to trumpet that into the world and make it sound like some achievement. I prefer fewer jumps and more healthy skaters if it come to that. Too many ED stories came out recently, which taint the sport for me.

Plus her calculating the programs... there should be some artistry. Evgenia managed to keep it somehow, but with Alina and her backloaded programs the problem is starting to feel obvious. ANd maybe soon judges will get tire of formula programs and make new rules... maybe extra points of equally distributed elements? Bring back spiral sequences? (please... make the step sequences shorter, because most skaters go for "difficult but not really graceful" and make spirals mandatory). I enjoy the jumps, I don't mind tanos and rippons... but formula skates are not the what the future should be.

Well, we will see the next season how many of ladies will come with 3A and quads. There is no point posting links on YouTube (Kurakova, Guliakova) if they don’t dare to use it in competitions. Kudos to Trusova for having the courage.

I found a vid on Instagram of Kurakova doing a 4S + 3T on instagram thought I’d leave it here (I’m not sure if it’s rotated) so I find it odd she’s not competing at junior nats https://www.instagram.com/p/BeOvbj9F9Qf/?taken-by=skater_on_ice
It's 4S<< by a clear margin.

But I do find it odd as well. Her scores have been fantastic this season and she should easily be good enough to fit in. I wonder if she's injured? But that shouldn't be the case if she recently managed to preform that combo. Interesting...

My hopes are for us seeing next season:

Trusova:
4 Salchow
4 Toe Loop
3 Axel

Kostornaia:
4 Salchow

Shcherbakova:
4 Toe Loop
4 Lutz

Apart from these three, I just am not sure about the state of some other skaters' jumps like this Kurakova 4S or Gulyakova 3A. They have looked incredibly UR and I'm just not sure if the potential is there at all. I also would not be sure about Kostornaia but at least she is training in a group that's shown the ability to make their girls learn to jump quads.

Right, an Akatieva quad is also possible next season. It should be possible this season already.

But even in the previous season Trusova's lutz looked more able for being a quad than Shcherbakova's. And in this season she is open up earlier before landing, almost like Akatieva.

It's simply because I know that's what they are planning on training. If Trusova's not training 4Lutz, she can't exactly add it. And I doubt she would before she gets these other jumps online.

Of course, Shcherbakova isn't training any quads right now so it's reliant on her going back to training what she was before her injury. The thing is, I just don't know about Shcherbakova's Lutz. Even last season, she was only doing it backloaded. How much additional height could she gain if she put everything into it and jumped it as the first element? Probably a little. But even her 4T that's fully rotated is only the height of an average senior lady's triple jump. It remains to be seen what happens with her rotation speed and what kind of jump height she will end up having when all is said and done and she's managed to peak after her injury(Hopefully it'll have slightly increased from last year).

It also remains to be seen whether Trusova actually manages to fully rotate a 4S in competition during this season, and what will happen to Shcherbakova in the case she gets a healthy off season.

Yeah, for now for me only three main points:

1) Stable 4S, 4T and 3A (or at least one stable and fully-rotated jump of them) from Sasha in the next season
2) Consistency in this season from Anya, and stable 4T in the next one
3) Akatieva's progress

I'm quite dumbfounded by Stasya's participation in junior nats. :scratch2:
Why would you travel 1100 kilometers from St Petersburg to Saransk two weeks before Olympic Games you're substitute for? To have a sparring against some juniors, which is basically meaningless in reputation sense and with possibility of injury or having poor outcome influencing your confidence?
I've thought (unlike in the past) RusFed decisions this season were close to perfect, but this one...?

Feel free to enlighten me, thanks in advance. :confused2:

PS. Stasya vs Anya - what the heck am I supposed to do now?
I'm completely not used to have two faves in one tourney.

You would cheer for the one who would benefit the most from a good placement :agree:

Right, I forgot about that. She had some off ice 3As, didn't she... I wonder to what level she is able to get with these during her offseason training.

Yes, and there was that one interview post Sr Nationals where I think she implied she has landed it at some point (but my Russian can be iffy). Hopefully she can get it during the offseason, as I'm partial to Axels.

Sorry if this was already posted, the practice in Niigata City of Russian Team will be opened for the public on February 3 and 4. The skaters are also going to have a kind of meet&greet with the local fans on 3 before the practice. The city says the health condition of the skaters is the top priority and they will not let us know the names of the skaters beforehand.

So Russian team will be staying in Japan until Februay 4 at least, which I think is no problem since there is no time difference between Japan and Korea.

Found this video of one of my favorite snowboarders giving a sort of lesson of a few basic Russian words. A lot of the words relate to Figure Skating events too so I thought maybe a few of the other English speakers like myself may enjoy this. It’s interesting hearing other athletes from around the world trying to figure out how to say and define the words.

It’s a very beautiful language and I’m starting to recognize and at least identify words and phrasing much better than I used to be able to. Unfortunately for me...the struggle is real.

Enjoy :)

I’d love to see one of our favorite figure skaters do something similar with other competitors.
