2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

I’m so excited for Bradie.

The US has been missing someone with the perfect technique but with a champions mind.

I think she will be one of the best in the world!

I’m so excited for her for Nationals and if she makes it (4CC, Olympics and Worlds)

I find it really odd how after a few years of Russian dominance in ladies, suddenly people say Russians got it all figured out, it's the government money, government funded ice rink, that's why Russians are the best. But remember, 10-20 years ago, Russia had all the same things. Yet, their most successful athlete during that time period was someone who couldn't compete among the US ladies.

Different countries dominate at different times.

Yeah let's see the Russian girls be medal contenders for over 50 years like the US ladies were until about a decade ago.

she need to do 3S-3T instead of 3Lz-3T, she can do 3Lz-2T and still repeating 3S and 3Lz in her FP. It wont change her BV too. Or put 2A-3T with no 3-3
 
I can't help it but miss Gracie's presence. I've imagined Gracie suddenly decides to compete at Nationals, so obtains a special bye from USFS and then boom! She snatches the National title in my silly imagination. :biggrin: Bradie's rising is quite commendable, but she is more like Polina during the 2013-14 season and none in the current US ladies seems to have as big potential as Gracie has. She has to take care of many things in her life, but participating in Olympics is such a big dream of which many athletics dream.

I don’t think Bradie is like Polina. More like Mariah Bell last season but way more jumping consistency. Polina was 15, a junior doing her first senior event ever, and nobody expected her to make the team or be on the podium. People have been making predictions that Bradie will be the champion. Nobody said that about Polina in ‘14. Also, although Bradie has been criticized for being “too old”, in a way the fact that she’s 19 is good. Her jumps probably aren’t going anywhere, she has already went through puberty so there’s much less of a chance that her jumps will disappear or she will develop any new technical issues. Bradie is a super solid jumper and the U.S. desperately needs one.

Will the US Olympic ladies actually go to 4CC? Nationals ends on the 8th and 4CC starts on the 22nd and the flight time from Illinois to Taipei City is about 16 hours. I think the girls who miss out on going to Pyeongchang will be sent to 4CC. YMMV.

And more importantly the Olympics start February 9.

I guess technically U.S., Canadian, or Australian skaters could go to Taipei for 4CCs then stay in Asia until it's time to go to the Olympics in Pyeongchang if they wanted to attend both but avoid some of the travel. But I imagine most skaters want to get the most training time they can at their home rinks, as well as rest up as much as possible for the Olympics. Not to mention, if they were staying in Asia, they'd have to find a training rink and would incur a great deal of expenses. They could, of course, go home between 4CCs and the Olympics, but that doesn't seem very practical.

He started hanging with with Sasha Cohen's and Mao Asada's former coach, Tarasova?, wearing Russian jackets, maybe even Team Russia jackets, and learning the Russian language. Yes, I remember when he was so excited someone gave him a Team Russia jacket. He also ended up being coached by Viktor Petrenko's coach and mother-in-law, Galina Zmievskaya, I always thought it's awesome that he taught himself Russian, and from what I understand, he speaks it quite well. Very cool.

I'm also very excited about Nationals. I always really enjoy them, but with it being an Olympic year, it just puts everything into overdrive.

I know what you mean about Tara and Johnny. I'm not a big fan of her commentary at all - she talks way too much and the giddy little girl thing is just awful. Plus she works in too much of her own experiences into her commentary. I understand they're great friends, and I get what NBC was trying for with pairing them together. But I've often thought that Johnny would be more palatable paired with just Terry or possibly with another skater/commentator like John Coughlin. I think Johnny is an intelligent guy, but when he and Tara are together, the commentary goes off the rails very quickly. And just...Too. Much. Talking.

Getting back OT (sorry!), my biggest hope for all the disciplines at Nationals is that competitors do their best, and may the competitors who will represent the U.S. the best end up on the podium. Particularly with Ladies, I'd like there to be no uncertainty or extra drama about who's chosen for the team. I know that body of work can be considered, and I understand it to a point, but I'd rather just see a podium filled with three competitors who had an outstanding competition and go from there.

I am also extremely excited for Bradie! I really like her consistency and, while I'm an Ashley fan first, I have to admit she has been underwhelming this season so far - hopefully she can redeem herself at Nats though!

I see a lot of people here love Mirai, and while I'm happy she's doing quite well this season I really don't see much to her skating, especially when it comes to performing. Kudos to her for mastering the 3A though, that's really impressive. As for Karen, I was never really a fan and this season has not helped me change my mind.

I wish good luck to all of them, of course. If I had to pick the team right now I would want Bradie, Ashley and, probably, Mirai.
 
Am I the only one thinking Kwan might pull out a gala show at the Olympics? No need to have a context, just send her out there. lol And take Plushenko as well. Call Lambiel to join the show too. And Sasha Cohen could spiral around. I'd pay millions (if I had them) to see that. lol

Sorry guys, only saw Bradie and Karen yesterday since they were the only ones in San Jose. The rest arrived today so I’ll try to get their practices up here if i can

I really hope Bradie has the skates of her life......She doesn't have the resume' of the other top ladies and she'll have to earn her spot through strong skating. I'm also hoping that Polina can deliver some solid programs even if she doesn't make the team. They did a small feature on the Olympics on our local station and talked about Nathan, Vincent, Ashley, and "San Jose Star" Polina Edmunds.......I was surprised they didn't talk about defending champion, Karen.

I have been wondering this as well. I recall Yuna saying something to the effect of being too out of practice to realistically do an exhibition... but here is Kwan getting to that point, so I just would not be surprised. I know people would love to see Yuna at the Olympics exhibition (I assume she will be the flame lighter), but if it is not going to happen, Kwan would be lovely.
 
Oh no, poor Hanna Harrell fell in the sp and got a score of 52. ☹️ But apparently there’s a promising 12yr-old who has a triple-triple, and she’s sitting 1st right now.

Also, has the senior ladies draw for the sp been done yet?

I don't think the draw has been done yet.

The promising 12-year-old I think you're referring to is Alyssa Liu.
