2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Oh boy. Here we go again guys

"Ashley Wagner has already proven she belongs on team"
https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...re-skating-nationals-ashley-wagner/994214001/

You know I honestly believe that the whole "nobody, including Ashley, can use the "body of work" excuse and must medal at nationals to make the Olympics team" idea is limited only to a grouping of online fans and nobody else outside of it believes it to be true at all. I think fans online take the written qualification criteria, word for word, exact meanings, far more seriously then anybody else including the USFSA itself.

I use to believe Ashley had no claim to it too but after Skate America and, seeing Ashley's car commercial a trillion times in two hours, and reading the press coverage since, I started to believe the USFSA, media, and other powers to be (NBC, US Olympic committee, advertisers, general fans) still think Ashley has a strong claim to the "body of work" excuse even with the decline in skating quality and results in the last year and half.

As many have pointed out in the last few weeks Ashley is the skating poster child for the Olympics. The only skating name Americans actually will recognize if they recognize any at all. I think Christine is simply repeating what everybody else outside the online skating fandom is thinking and saying :confused2:

Zhang and Tennell are on fire, haven’t missed a jump yet! Karen is still struggling with urs

OH MY GOD! BRADIE JUST FELL ON A 3F! SO UNEXPECTED SHE LOOKED SO CONSISTENT, Shang still hasn’t missed a thing, Karen looked nervous on her run through

Sooo their basically done, a lot of question marks on Chen, Zhang and Tennell looked really strong.

Full Jumps attempted Per Rockerskating:
Tennell: 3Lz3T, 3Lz3T, runthru (3Lz3T, 2A), 3Lo, 3Lo, 3S, 3F, 3F(fall), 2A, 3F, 3Lz2T2Lo, 3Lz3T

Chen: 2A, 3Lo, 3S2T, 3T, 3Lz(ur?)3T(ur), 1F, 3F(e?ur?), 3F(e?), 2A1/2Lo3S, 3Lo, 3Lz(2ft?)3T(ur?), runthru (3Lz3T(ur?), 3F(e,turn), 2A1/2Lo3S(ur), 3Lz(fall), 3Lo, 3S2T, 2A), 3Lz, 2A1/2Lo3S(ur),

Zhang: 2A, 2A, 3Lo, 3Lz, 3Lo3Lo, 3Lo3Lo, 3Lo3Lo, 3T, 3Lz(e?), runthru (3F, 3Lo3Lo, 2A)

You're probably right. However, I don't like the media, especially someone like Brennan who is somewhat of an insider, pushing the narrative that Ashley deserves a spot no matter what. Maybe that is being encouraged by the USFSA or whoever else, but it's then pointless to list events that will be considered when they're just going to select based on a good Worlds result from two years ago anyway.

I wouldn't be surprised if the judges at nationals mark Karen's urs even though they have largely ignored them for nearly everybody else in the past. Karen's actual skating and results this season have made it too difficult to ignore frankly :confused2:

not to mention if Ashley isn't 100% it would give her some breathing room where she doesn't have to be perfect. She can perform similar to Skate Canada or the Skate America SP and still easily make the top 3. Marking Karen's urs (as they should anyway) will help them avoid the tough decisions of 2014 again. Caroline Zhang even with her recent revival still isn't at Ashley's overall level, they don't take Courtney seriously, and they probably aren't looking twice at Mariah due to her inconsistency (they can nitpick and mark her lower just in case if necessary).

at this point I think the Olympic team is Bradie, Mirai and Ashley with Bradie and Ashley doing the team event (Ashley won't turn that down since she knows that's where her only medal chance is coming from). Karen despite her success last year will be on the outside looking in :confused2:

True, true, exciting to see Zhang, a sentimental favorite of mine doing well tho!

Mariah could be a dark horse for the team, still. If two of the four "favorites" (Ashley, Mirai, Karen, Bradie) falter, she could sneak in. I've been counting her out, but her practice seems solid. (Per Jackie: 3F, 2A, 3Lz, runthru (3Lz, 3S, 3F, 3Lz(step), 1A), 3Lz, 2A, 2A, 2A3T, 2A3T, 3Lz2T2T, 3Lz, 3Lz3T(step), 3Lz3T, 1Lo, 3Lo).

Karen should 100% get called on her URs, god willing. I love her skating, but feel like she and her team need a wake-up call with the UR problems. Go to Frank or Tom or Raf or someone else - whatever her current team is doing is clearly not working, and they need a new perspective.

Update:Ashley, Polina, and Starr just started practice. We will see LaLa Land from Ashley today!!!

If Ashley fails to medal at Nationals again and is put on the team, I think the every 4 years fans and the media (for the sake of a story) will start rumbling. Ashley is fortunate this year that the US ladies have been fairly weak competitively and all she has to do is hope everyone continues to skate as they have been and she will be boosted on PCS enough to put her in the top 3 and on the Olympic team with little rumblings from the press and general fans.

Not to worry! Ashley’s flip toe looks so much better! We just need her to hit IT in competition. PLEASE ASHLEY DO IT!

The media rumbled 4 years ago and that was when Ashley had a fresh GPF medal to her name (that the media conveniently ignored).

If it happens again, there will be riots in the streets. (Well, lots of mean things on the internet, anyway.) I'm 100% on board with USFS using the body-of-work criteria to send the best skaters to Worlds and the Olympics - but under NO circumstances does Ashley meet that criteria this season. I want Ashley on the team, but this season she needs to earn it at Nationals.

LaLa Land looks great! Ash,he looks so solid technically. Her only mistake so far was a 2ft on the loop sal”!
