2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

I can't help it but miss Gracie's presence. I've imagined Gracie suddenly decides to compete at Nationals, so obtains a special bye from USFS and then boom! She snatches the National title in my silly imagination. Bradie's rising is quite commendable, but she is more like Polina during the 2013-14 season and none in the current US ladies seems to have as big potential as Gracie has. She has to take care of many things in her life, but participating in Olympics is such a big dream of which many athletics dream.

Agreed. I hope she gets healthy and is able to skate at a high level. Gracie still has the most potential of any US lady I've seen since Sasha Cohen retired. After everything she's been through, it'd be nice if she could finally win a World medal as she always hoped she would.

Yes, I remember when he was so excited someone gave him a Team Russia jacket. He also ended up being coached by Viktor Petrenko's coach and mother-in-law, Galina Zmievskaya, I always thought it's awesome that he taught himself Russian, and from what I understand, he speaks it quite well. Very cool.

I'm also very excited about Nationals. I always really enjoy them, but with it being an Olympic year, it just puts everything into overdrive.

I know what you mean about Tara and Johnny. I'm not a big fan of her commentary at all - she talks way too much and the giddy little girl thing is just awful. Plus she works in too much of her own experiences into her commentary. I understand they're great friends, and I get what NBC was trying for with pairing them together. But I've often thought that Johnny would be more palatable paired with just Terry or possibly with another skater/commentator like John Coughlin. I think Johnny is an intelligent guy, but when he and Tara are together, the commentary goes off the rails very quickly. And just...Too. Much. Talking.

Getting back OT (sorry!), my biggest hope for all the disciplines at Nationals is that competitors do their best, and may the competitors who will represent the U.S. the best end up on the podium. Particularly with Ladies, I'd like there to be no uncertainty or extra drama about who's chosen for the team. I know that body of work can be considered, and I understand it to a point, but I'd rather just see a podium filled with three competitors who had an outstanding competition and go from there.
My favorite commentator right now is Charlie White. Not sure he can be heard outside of icenetwork. He tells you everything you need to know, voices his opinions and, most importantly, knows when to just shut up and let you enjoy the performance. As one of the lesser educated fans on here, I need some info from the commentators, but I don't need them talking the whole time.

Ok...back to the topic...

Wow, thank you for posting this! Great article on her background. It's true, you see her father in the background in her videos closely watching. And it's true, I remember watching her intermediate skating videos and thought she's not bad, but when she hit novice, she made dramatic improvement on her jumps, I couldn't believe it, because it was in such a short time span. I have been closely watching her develop her skating on youtube, haha... I knew she skated at the Oakland Ice Rink, but I didn't know she lives in Richmond, CA!....I grew up in Richmond, still a lot of family there! it's still my home. Nice to know there is a promising US figure skater representing Richmond, Oakland!! Maybe one of these days, I will take my niece and nephew on a Saturday and we'll see her practice, haha.

I wish her all the best in reaching the Olympics, and yes, I agree, she will make a splash in the US skating scene.

You're welcome. I happened across the video that went with the article while I was reading about another young skater in the Bay area, Dinh Tran: https://www.mercurynews.com/2017/12...ow-one-teen-is-overcoming-skatings-long-odds/

The video that goes with the article on Tran is really good, they follow him on his morning commute through SF's Tenderloin District to his rink. I walked through the Tenderloin District once; it was quite the experience.

wow, thanks for sharing that article. What a wonderful article on his family background. Yeah, that's the Tenderloin District, haha...but I'm sure Dinh will be fine. When you grow up in that kind of environment as i have in the Iron Triangle neighborhood of Richmond, ca, you aren't scared...you just get used to it. I didn't know about him before, but I will definitely watch his youtube videos now! And he skates at the Oakland Ice Rink too! Maybe I will see him there practicing one of these days, haha.

This is Alyssa’s SP from regionals.

https://youtu.be/FzrboKQ2UK8

She’s been having a good season. Very consistent and much better than last year. She’s a back loader, with all but just the 2As in her 2nd. While she has received underrotations, I think she’ll get them under control over the next year.

I think her FS is even more impressive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcxqFoLxJnI He has really nice flow, edges, and wonderful presence and carriage on the ice. I hope he gets those axels and quads soon. Exciting to see how he will develop, he's still so young and I'm sure he will get there!

I've subscribed to her channel...her father posts all her skating comps! Cant wait to see her performances at Nationals!

Am I the only one thinking Kwan might pull out a gala show at the Olympics? No need to have a context, just send her out there. lol And take Plushenko as well. Call Lambiel to join the show too. And Sasha Cohen could spiral around. I'd pay millions (if I had them) to see that. lol

I think it would be unusual for a skater to perform in an Olympic gala who isn't a competitor, a skater from the host country, or an OGMist. Although it would be great to see Kwan perform in more shows in the future.

ashwagsfan, are you talking about unofficial practice today? Was it rink 2 at solar4america ice?
Sorry yeah it was in solar 4

anecdotally, fwiw:

at skate america in lake placid, official practices began on thursday (thanksgiving day) in the 1980 rink (competition rink).

On wednesday, unofficial practice (not announced [afaik] in any way to fans, and not shown on the up-to-date color-coded schedule) was taking place in the 1932 rink at the other end of the building.

I happened to be randomly walking past the 1932 rink on wednesday, glanced through the windows of the doors, and realized that savchenko/massot were practicing. So on the spur of the moment, i went in to watch. After s/b ... Nathan, bradie, and the parsons were among those who practiced (only slight overlap among them). I forget who else.
Based on a comment i overheard from someone working with nathan, i got the impression that nathan had not yet checked in at official accreditation. (no idea one way or the other about the other skaters.)
unlike at official practice, skaters (and/or coaches) were on their own to start/stop/replay program music as they wished (i'm guessing much the same as at home rinks?). At unofficial practice, there was no one taking care of playing music for the skaters. And no practice announcer.

During the two hours or so that i watched unofficial practice, there were very few other spectators (maybe half a dozen?) watching at any length.
Some fans who stopped in rather briefly seemed to have stumbled upon the unofficial practice as passers-by, just like me.

Oh boy. Here we go again guys

"Ashley Wagner has already proven she belongs on team"
https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...re-skating-nationals-ashley-wagner/994214001/

Outside of the outlandish claim that Wagner has proven she belongs on the team (not sure where getting worse the last 2 years equals spot on the Olympic team) the interesting thing I picked out of the article was her stating that Russian skaters would be competing in the team event with Canada for gold and silver....So has there been word that Russian skaters will be able to compete in the team event under the Olympic flag?

It really is impressive. All jumps but her 2A in the 2nd half.

https://youtu.be/NIsELtJf1pg

I'd say what's even more impressive is her presentation and use of choreo for such a young age. If she's like this at only 12, just think of what a gem she'll be at 16 (by the 2022 OGM). Now maybe I'm biased because of her style/music choice (it reminds me of a certain someone, hehe), but I think she has the *it* factor. I'm looking forward to this.

I could be wrong, but aren't Mariah, Courtney, Tessa, Hannah, Angela and Francesca supposed to be having an official practice right now?
