2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Really inconsiderate and thoughtless of Patient Zero to attend Nationals, a high-people-volume competition, when the US is in the midst of a deadly flu epidemic.

He knew he had the flu and attended competition anyway. People could have died.

AFAIK, the bug at Nationals was never identified/confirmed to be an influenza virus ... as opposed to something different.

People who had invested years of preparation leading up to 2018 Nats were depending on Patient Zero's participation there. And the person also had invested many years of preparation.
Going forward or not would have been a very tough call for many of us, I daresay.

When will the name for team event announced? ...

IMO, probably not until much closer to the official deadline for submitting names to the ISU.

FWIW what I got at Nationals was identified as a virus, not influenza.

It's one thing if the alternative to delegating your job (nooooo) was infecting thousands of people at Nationals with a deadly flu

But just infecting thousands of people at Nationals with a flu-like virus that takes a month to recover from, that's a-okay.

Uh are you trying to say that I was the one that infected everyone? Because that would be wrong since I got the stupid virus from others at Nationals.

I've had the flu several time in the past. This wasn't the flu, but it did make me miserable for two weeks and below par for two more. The worst thing was the chest congestion and coughing fits which kept me up all night. I had no appetite and hardly ate anything because eating just made the coughing worse.

If you're referring to the bug that was going around at Nats:

The name of "Patient Zero" would be immediately recognizable to you and other members of GS.
I heard the name directly from a leader of the official medical team for the event.

Of course, I'm not going to say more than that.

Just wanted to state that Patient Zero was not someone behind the scenes.

 I find it hard to imagine that a SINGLE person was the source...for something to spread that vigorously (and affect the audience too), most likely had to be several people ill...of course, once a handful of people are ill, once assembled in a closed environment (like a stadium) it just snowballs from there. THAT SAID - if true, had to have been either a member of the media or one of the skaters/coaches.

There has to be a way to contain the spread of illnesses in competitions. We can’t have skaters picking up the flu just before their next major competition. Not to mention the audience paid good money to see them and now think why risk coming to see skaters live and get sick when you can view it safety from home.

That's tough, though...you can implement all the sanitary procedures you want but I doubt anything short of quarantine (which, of course, would never happen) would prove much use. Doesn't help that the major competitions happen right at the height of flu season anyway.

As of a post-Nats article, Angela was undecided about her future in skating.

Salt Lake native Angela Wang doesn’t know how much longer figure skating will be the main focus of her life ...

She said she can see a number of futures for herself, both with and without pursuing elite-level figure skating.

“I feel like I’ve grown a lot as a skater, even in the past three or four years,” she said. “I feel like I keep making improvements. If I stop now, I feel like I wouldn’t be sad. I’d feel like I’m leaving on a good note. But if I continue, I definitely feel like I still have more to offer.” ...

She's been around for some time, no? Anyway, this seems to have been her best season to date(?) and I think that she's likely gone as high as she's going to go. Anyway, I've always wondered...we always hear about the Olympic hopefuls, the press likes to tell their story, and to a lesser degree, the ones that get super close but fall short...but how about the ones that are merely in the ballpark...? Maybe Olys is not their goal, or if it is, the likelihood of getting there is so low due to them not being quite at "that level" yet...

Patient Zero has been identified!

I think Brightphoton is referring to whoever came to nationals sick and made so many others sick.
People need to observe better protocals.
WASH your hands often, don't touch your face in public. Stop spreading germs everywhere.

I'm pretty sure it was the flu. This year's flu vaccine isn't especially effective against one of the strains that's been prominent this year. Unfortunately the strain seems to be a particularly nasty one. It's taken out a lot of people I know up here and my friends elsewhere in NA say the same (including me!).

ETA: And of course as vaccination rates go down, it spreads more and you end up with nastier strains that are easier to catch. An unfortunate storm.

Every year they have to guess which strain is going to emerge, usually from Asian, and vaccinate against that strain. If they get it wrong then the flu season is worse even for those who get the shot.

For healthy people the flu isn't usually a big deal but if someone is already compromised it could be deadly. At the nursing home I visit nearly 15 people died last winter from flu related illnesses.

She hasn't been around that long. And she's just coming into her own and the Olympics is a goal for her.

No, I was just thinking out loud about the situation. It was by the grace of God that Patient Zero spread "only" a flu-like virus and not the actual flu.

There's not one person at Nationals, aside from the athletes themselves, whose job was so essential that he couldn't delegate his job to someone else. Sure, it wouldn't be the absolute best substitute, probably. But this came uncomfortable close to causing deaths. Patient Zero, shame on you. 100% reckless, thoughtless, and irresponsible.

Are you sure patient zero wasn’t a skater?

I think that needs not to be answered :slink:

I spent a while researching dog flu which is high in the Bay Area but it’s not contagious. I was thinking about blaming those cute puppies

What Mirai had over Rachael was speed across the ice. I actually preferred Rachael's LP but, I can see why some preferred Mirai due to her superior speed. Especially in Vancouver where the BOTH skated very well. My biggest problem was her lack of Flexibility. However, she was a very good performer. Theatrical and expressive. Here's her LP from Vancouver. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K_xsVCvEmQ

It's interesting that Flatt still receives comments on her lack of flexibility 8 years after her win at Nationals. Flatt did mention in an interview a number of years ago, though I can't find the link at this point, edited to add....found one acknowledgment by Flatt

https://www.denverpost.com/2010/04/22/rachael-flatt-jumping-from-homework-to-elite-world-skating/

that she incurred ruptured discs in her back the first year she was to compete in the JPG , but IIRC, she w/d from her first assigned event that year, had to sit out the remainder of the international season, and competed thru the US qualifying system to make it to US nationals. She lost the innate flexibility she had as a novice ...found a photo from her novice season on her FB page:

https://www.facebook.com/RachaelFla...46074183433/10151575673673434/?type=3&theater

I don't recall Flatt ever making excuses for her lack of flexibility after the injuries happened. She had to accommodate the injuries by using different spins in her programs.

I can't imagine skating with 3 herniated/ruptured discs in my back ( much less doing everyday activities) that she continued for several more years at the elite level , winning the US title in 2010 and qualifying for the 2010 Olympics, 2008 World Jr Champion, 3 time US silver medalist, SGP medalist, world team member.....all after the back injuries.... until she said that the chronic injuries contributed to inability to train she wanted and her decision to retire.

Flatt talks about the cumulative affects of years of skating injured:

http://gazette.com/ramsey-rachael-f...dbye-from-competitive-skating/article/1512416

I really don't think she deserved all the negative comments she received over the years. I wouldn't have endured her injuries and continued in the sport. That is for sure. Not sure many current US ladies would have either. Think about the changes Flatt made to her skating post 2007. Corrected her lutz take off, embraced the comments from the US judges about finding more approachable music (her very heartfelt East of Eden program at 2011 US championships, which was a brand new program for her as she had dumped the SP she had all season and had just competed at the SGPF in December ....speaks to her ability to work hard with Lori Nichol to create a new program and perform it at the elite level in less than a month...and quite frankly, can't say the same for some current elite ladies). She consistently was trying more difficult combinations 3F-3T, 3Lz-3T, 2A-3Lp, and if I remember correctly her coach did an interview at some point that he had Flatt putting 3Lp on the back half of all her combinations.

She worked hard despite debilitating injuries.

I compare Flatt's perservance in the sport to Nagasu buckling down the past 18 months (again, both working with Zakrajsek). The mindset of these two skaters is to be admired, pushing thru injuries, set backs, personal disappointments, etc.

So Flatt wasn’t doing the Beilmann in her spins because of the injured back? I know that up until recently (the 2015/16 season???) the beilmann was required to receive a level 4, right? So I’m guessing that lots of ladies, including Flatt, got injuries trying to achieve that position?

It was the layback spin that was required, but going from layback into biellmann is an automatic level 4, so probably yes.
