2017-18 State of U.S. Men's Figure Skating

Just a crazy thought came into my mind, what about if Zhou happens to win the US Nationals? Chen of course will be selected to the OG team no matter what and the remaining skaters Rippon, Aaron and Brown will be fighting over the one remaining slot...

This is no good for Vincent https://www.mercurynews.com/2017/12/26/scary-moment-for-palo-alto-skater-with-olympic-aspirations/.

Shoulder dislocation tends to recur on the same exercises. A Samohin 2 at nationals would be horrible to Vincent.

He's still young and I hope he doesn't push things too far. Remember when Angela Nikodinov dislocated her shoulder? She missed quite a bit of time letting it heal. In fact, I think she had to have surgery and she couldn't do a Sal for a couple of seasons.

it is uncertain whether or not USFS/IN will revert back to posting audio of media teleconferences.

AFAIK, none of the pre-Nats audio for 2018 has been posted (at least, not yet???).

Yes, they're usually batch-posted on IN a few days after they're done. I'm looking forward to Max's!

Thanks to you both for answering! At least I know I'm not neglecting to look someplace obvious.

Seriously? Only if the other skaters' mothers are on the committee? And if the other skaters kick your butt at Nationals, what then? Ugh.

It was a joke. Not ironic or mean. Just a light-hearted remark. Adam knows the mothers aren't on the committee.

Well, the only way I could see them not going with Adam is if he has nightmare at Nationals. He just beat Jason at the GPF and he has a ton of momentum going into Nationals. With Vincent not being 100% healthy, I no longer have him in the picture. Our team needs the big jumps to be competitive with the rest of the men. Nathan, Max, and Adam Rippon. That's my team....

Any word on if Vincent is still going to do the crazy 5 quad layout in light of the shoulder injury?

Then how does Adam fit in if big jumps are needed to be competitive? Adam has no quad and i doubt at his age he will suddenly get one. If Vincent quits sabotaging his SP and lands 3-4 quads in the LP he can beat Adam because Vincent has the big jumps.

Yes, he said he would be attempting 5 quads and 2 3As. It's not uncommon for slightly injured athletes to be able to give some of their best performances because the injury helps them to focus better.

This is an excellent question! When it comes to the battle between Vincent and Adam I have to go with their 2017 head to head matchup. The fact that Adam made the GPF and Vincent did not, gives him the advantage. What Adam has is incredible PCS with his LP. When he skates clean, he's absolutely beautiful to watch. I really like Vincent but, he is fresh out of Juniors and I think he and Alexei represent the future for the US Men.

Olympic Selection Criteria:
2018 U.S. Championships
2017 Grand Prix Final Adam (5th), Max (DNQ)[/B]
2017 World Championships: Both DNQ
2017 Grand Prix Series: Adam (2nd SA, 2nd NHK), Max (3rd CC, 7th TOF)
2017 Four Continents Championships: Both DNQ
2017 U.S. Championships: Adam (WD), Max (9th)
2016 Grand Prix Final: Adam(6th), Max (DNQ)

-According to criteria, Adam deserves to be on the olympic team more than Max. The only way Max will be selected over Adam is if Adam places 6th or lower at Nationals and Max places 2nd or 3rd. That scenario would be a real stretch. The only spot really up for grabs is the 3rd spot, and that is between Jason, Max, or Vincent.

I’m not sure how you got this out of the criteria - no one knows exactly how they’re weighted or used; no exact “formula” has been published awarding so many points for a 5th place finish at GPF, etc.

I'm not trying to speak for NathanandMiraiFan111; still, here's my thought. If you look at the order that the criteria are listed in, which (the way I read it) reflects the weight and the tier of each, then Adam has the advantage over Max. That includes both the GPF 2017 result, and the Grand Prix season 2017 results.

Of course it isn't everything; we all know what clutch performances at Nationals can do, and how thrilling they are. Nothing is 100% predictable; and thank goodness for that!

Looking at the emotional tone of the post that NathanandMiraiFan was responding to, it seems to me that NAMF hoped to add a bit of objective clarity.

I agree that Adam probably has a “body of work” advantage over Max; the question is how great it is. Adam’s had a good season, but except for the GPF, he has no Tier 1 competitions, and while his Tier 2 results are slightly better than Max’s (2 silver v 1 bronze), we have no idea how the much weight the committee places on those results. Basically, I don’t think there’s enough information to make the kind of specific valuation that NathanandMiraiFan did! JMO.

Agreeing with and adding to what Tavi said:

As a diehard Max fan, I readily agree that for the criteria other than 2018 Nats, Adam would have the advantage over Max.
That broad assessment is not at issue.

But it is not warranted (IMO) for NathanandMiraifan111's post to name specific Nats placements that would result in a certain outcome regarding team selection.

For one thing, Nats will be a head-to-head competition, and we have reason to believe that scores will be taken into consideration.
If the committee needed to compare the men who placed third vs. sixth in San Jose, I think a gap of twenty points would not be viewed identically to a gap of five points, for example.

And honestly, there's nothing stopping the committee from deciding that body-of-work isn't really that much of a factor. Just look at Japanese Nationals -- Wakaba Higuchi had a much better BOW under their criteria than Kaori Sakamoto, but it wasn't compelling enough to justify sending Wakaba to the Olympics over Kaori, who essentially had an amazing two skates at nationals.

I hope we get a men's national championship that has so many splendid performances that we argue over the results and the team selection for years.

Because, frankly, Russian nationals and Japanese nationals weren't that great. I haven't seen it, but I understand Javi underwhelmed at Spanish nationals.

It's time to step up to the plate, gentlemen.

In this report it says:
He feels he’s made a complete recovery now, although there is still one spin position he cannot do. He figures it will be cleared up by the time the men start the short program next week. He’s lucky he’s young and his body heals fast.

He can't be seriously injuried if he's going for 5 quads and 2 axels in the free skate. He's still on my 'will' list.

Because it’s a championship? And maybe also because it determined the number of Oly spots?

And it was LAST SEASON and has no bearing on how well anyone is skating now.

Wakaba had an amazing season but faltered in both the GPF and nationals. It could be argued that both my have a direct result of her injury but Wakaba has a habit of succumbing to pressure at high stake events (4CC and Worlds 2017). Kaori also has medaled in 6 of her 8 international events for the last two seasons. I think body of work and momentum were major factors in the naming of the teams. Kaori to Olympics for momentum and consistency to deliver under pressure. Wakaba to Worlds to reward her body of work!

Just my opinion... detailing this thread. Sorry!
