2017-18 State of U.S. Men's Figure Skating

Wakaba had an amazing season but faltered in both the GPF and nationals. It could be argued that both my have a direct result of her injury but Wakaba has a habit of succumbing to pressure at high stake events (4CC and Worlds 2017). Kaori also has medaled in 6 of her 8 international events for the last two seasons. I think body of work and momentum were major factors in the naming of the teams. Kaori to Olympics for momentum and consistency to deliver under pressure. Wakaba to Worlds to reward her body of work!

Just my opinion... detailing this thread. Sorry!

And I can see Adam or Jason getting Worlds based on BOW also, but I don't think it's enough to get an Olympic berth if they're outside top 3. On the other hand, I didn't expect Jason to get Worlds on BOW either last year, so what do I know?

I think BOW will be used very selectively. They really only used it on one skater -- Ashley -- in 2014.

I’m willing to bet if Max had been to Worlds last year and done well, you would be happy that it was being considered.

And Max's solid performance at Worlds in 2013 is a big reason, IMO, that he got Worlds 2014.

Cute attempt at a gotcha, but no, I maintain this season's results are more important as they speak to actual form, rather than what might have happened a year ago.

Hope Max's teleconference is today, I'm looking forward to the highlights.

I’m not trying to be cute. But the “season” is arbitrary. And frankly, competitions in September/October are probably no more predictive of how someone will perform next week than one last March.

I agree that Adam probably has a “body of work” advantage over Max; the question is how great it is. Adam’s had a good season, but except for the GPF, he has no Tier 1 competitions, and while his Tier 2 results are slightly better than Max’s (2 silver v 1 bronze), we have no idea how the much weight the committee places on those results. Basically, I don’t think there’s enough information to make the kind of specific valuation that NathanandMiraiFan did! JMO.

I don't disagree with you. It's true, we don't have exact information. I was just going on the basic idea that they've put the events in order of weight and tier considerations. I tend to be literal that way, and not very cynical.

But as I said, we all know what clutch performances at Nationals can do. Nothing is 100% predictable. The funny thing to me is how much weight so many GS posters put in their own analysis of what the skaters have done and how thoroughly some believe in their own predictions. For me, it's as much about belief in possibilities that haven't necessarily yet been seen. Here's a toast ... to each his own! :)

Go Adam!:hap10:

I'll offer you a deal. I'll root for Max if you'll root for Vincent. ....

:ghug:

And here is a nice nod to Max from Vincent's media call:

The U.S. men’s field is stacked with Olympic contenders, including 2017 Grand Prix Final Champion and 2017 U.S. Champion Nathan Chen, 2016 U.S. Champion Adam Rippon, 2015 U.S. Champion Jason Brown, and 2013 U.S. Champion Max Aaron. “Everyone poised to make the Olympic team is a fighter,” Zhou said of his competitors, and he pointed to training mate Max Aaron’s work ethic this season as inspirational.

This comment from Vincent about hometown support in San Jose made me smile :):

“I think there is going to be a cheering section that my mother is involved with organizing, so I’m very excited about the support I’ll have there.”

Go, Mama Zhou :yay:.

ETA:

Forgot to mention that Jordan Moeller is a choreographer  for Ben Jalovick, per the Official Event Program for 2018 Nats.

See p. 37 of the program. (Rohene and Jordan both listed as Ben's choreographers.)

Go, Jordan :yay:. And Ben :yay:. And all the men :yay:.

<, <<, <, <, <....

Now that Vincent Zhou is Christy Krall's main U.S. male skater, I am curious about whether she will be able to help him fix his UR issues. Krall's skaters tend to not have near as many URs or edge issues as other coach's skaters. I'm assuming that Zhou's growth spurt has completed - he looked like he grew A LOT over the last couple of seasons.

He can't be seriously injuried if he's going for 5 quads and 2 axels in the free skate. He's still on my 'will' list.

Yes, he said he would be attempting 5 quads and 2 3As. It's not uncommon for slightly injured athletes to be able to give some of their best performances because the injury helps them to focus better.

I'm more worried about Vincent, from a health perspective, attempting jump content like this than I was about Nathan - and that's saying a lot.

Thx for the catch :clap:So cool about Jordan; he has such a smooth and artistic sensibility. And of course, you couldn't do much better than to apprentice with Rohene:agree:

It is sad that some well deserving skaters are not going to get on the team. It is a dream to walk out as part of Team USA at the opening ceremonies. We all want our favorites to have that experience.
I was thinking after the GPF that ( senior) nationals seemed to be coming so fast, now it can't get here fast enough.
A week from Sunday we will know who gets the 2 spots ( we all know Nathan is guaranteed a spot) aaahh!!:con3:
I may need hospitalization in a soft room before all this is over.

Want to take a break of talking about the top men to share this.

Dinh Tran, who is profiled below, is one of the junior men competitors. He is the 2017 Novice Men bronze medalist and competed at JGP Poland this season.

His skating is really lovely and it's amazing what he had to do to get to this point.

SAN FRANCISCO — Dinh Tran’s path to ice skating stardom takes him past drug addicts, prostitutes and the homeless along the pungent streets of the Tenderloin.

The teenager pushes his Razor scooter or takes a Muni bus to get to the Yerba Buena recreational rink about 10 city blocks from his studio apartment. One day last week he was spotted on crowded 4th Street rolling a suitcase filled with skating clothes toward the rink.

“I just got off the bus,” he said.

In a sport known for glitzy wardrobes, polished maneuvers and high-end individualized coaching, Dinh, 16, is not the norm.

“It’s against all odds,” said Jessica Gaynor, Skating Club of San Francisco president.

Dinh Tran is one of 15 up-and-coming Bay Area skaters competing this week in the lower divisions at the U.S. figure skating championships in San Jose. Only the senior skaters are trying to advance to the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Dinh is scheduled to skate Monday at Solar4America Ice and Wednesday at SAP Center in the fiercely competitive juniors that will preview the next generation of American men.

The Stuart Hall High School sophomore is not favored to win by any stretch of the imagination. But just reaching the national championships at this level is triumphant itself.

Mimi Hoang has reared her four boys in a tiny apartment in the crime-ridden Tenderloin neighborhood where she has lived for years. She and her youngest son sleep in a bed crammed into a large closet. Her oldest boys sleep in a bunk bed while Dinh uses a mattress on the floor of the living room.

A bit more of Vincent's positive comments :) about Max, via Lynn Rutherford's tweeting:

On his call, Vincent said Max was just killing it in practices. Impressed me that another skater would step up and say that. ...

https://twitter.com/LynnRutherford/status/946497266830987269 (Dec 28)

Lynn's tweet was giving an example -- in her usual self-deprecating fashion :ghug: -- of why she was re-thinking her predictions after the media calls.

BTW, I was pleased to see that when referring to Brynne McIsaac's move away from her family in order to train with Tom Z, the article below (not written by Lynn) says, "... the family environment at the rink helps."
I think/hope it is safe to assume that with their goodwill to all, Vincent and Max are examples of supporting the family environment.

:agree: Perhaps GS should go ahead and block-book a whole hospital ward before Nats.
And then I will reserve a bed for myself. :hopelessness: :sad4: :shock2: :drama:

Thanks so much for posting this!

His story reminds me a bit of Rohene’s, and I hope he will one day have equal success, whether as a skater or a choreographer or coach.

To go OT a bit, Alison Manley once did a great interview with Rohene where he discussed what it was like for him growing up in a tough neighborhood. Sadly, the interview was cut short due to equipment malfunctions. I really wish that she (or someone else, since she’s no longer recording podcasts) would finish it.

ETA: okay this is really OT, but I just saw this picture of Sandy Koufax, and my first thought was, OMG he looks like Max!

What a wonderful story about a grounded young man dealing with some very challenging conditions in pursuing competitive skating, I also thought of Rohene and his story about riding the bus to get to the rink, also among the least of his own challenges.

Go Dinh; I now have another junior man to root for:hap10:

(And OT I’m glad that the local paper Mercury News is stepping up and highlighting junior and novice competitors with “up close and personal” articles.)

The first passage, I thought he was an ex druggie homeless prostitute who pulled himself together. It is still very admirable. I echo the sentiment, someone to root for moving forward.

More artwork (skating doodles) featuring some of our favorites!

Four of the top US men, plus Wonder Woman, as Fab Five Superheroes. :hap10: It's really cool, and imo good depictions!

Note: the acronym in the skating doodle link was disallowed. I did try to give credit where it was due.

I love this doodle so much!

My only question: who is Max supposed to be? I got Ashley as Wonder Woman, Nathan as the Flash, Jason as the Green Lantern, and Adam as Cat(wo)man but I wasn't sure who Max is. Apart from his awesome self, of course.
