Running the numbers, Piper and Paul's chances at the Final aren't as bad as I thought they were after the RD disaster, mainly thanks to their huge FD score. We can basically assume four qualifiers:
1. Papadakis/Cizeron (1st at NHK, 1st at IdF)
2. Hubbell/Donohue (1st at SA, 1st at SCI - already qualified)
3. Stepanova/Bukin (1st at Finland, 1st/2nd at Rostelecom)
4. Guignard/Fabbri (2nd at SA, 2nd at Finland)
Zahorski/Guerreiro are the other team with a bronze medal right now, their other event being NHK, where their presumed competition is Hawayek/Baker. H/B supposedly are dealing with a concussion aftermath, so it's possible they won't show, or that if they do show, they won't be at their best, but that's only mildly important -- one of these two will come away with a silver.
Rostelecom, Stepanova/Bukin's second event, may or may not also feature Chock/Bates, also recovering from injury and having dropped out of Finland. Similar to H/B, if they do make it back, they're likely not going to be in peak form, but even if they aren't great they'd be favoured to do no worse than second. The other teams that would be in contention for the silver if C/B don't appear are ones like Hurtado/Khaliavin and Carreira/Ponomarenko, who likely aren't going to get the scores and/or ordinals at their other event (Finland, in both cases) to contend for a Finals place.
Which brings us to...IdF, where Papadakis/Cizeron will reign supreme, and there's a potential three-way brawl between Gilles/Poirier, Sinitsina/Katsalapov, and Hawayek/Baker (again, assuming they make it). Sinitsina/Katsalapov just need to be on the podium to qualify, so they're likely the fifth team, given their big scores so far.
The sixth and final spot will have to be decided here, and the only team seemingly set to be contending for it that isn't actually at this event is Zahorski/Guerreiro. If Z/G take silver at NHK, then they're the competition. If H/B take silver at NHK, then they are. Piper and Paul's first-event score is noticeably higher than Z/G's, even with the fall in the RD, because their FD was so huge, so they're still in a position to win a tiebreaker with them if they take silver at IdF. Which is what it comes down to. If they come second at IdF, they're likely in.
