Could anyone confirm when the events will be please?

That's why I have to correct the first quote a little bit. It means something to me as I was born in Perm and lived there until 16 y.o. before moving to Moscow. I remember that one of my essays in English class started with: "Perm is my native town..."

1 million people can hardly be named as "small city". In fact, it is 14th largest city in Russia, much bigger than Saransk where Rusnats happenned this year.

It was founded in 1723 by the decree of Peter the Great. This is actually another quote from my school essay that I already mentioned., So, it was in the 18th century.

The rest of the information is correct.

Interesting about Perm. Sam, is Peter The Great the greatest Russian of all time?

Speaking of the greatest who is the greatest female Russian figure skater of all time? Irina, Zhenya or Alina? Close call.

Greatest male Russian figure skater of all time? Yagudin or Plushenko? Due to longevity it would have to be Plushenko.

Well Peter the Great certainly was well-known and of course 'Great'. But then so was Catherine the Great. Don't know who was the Greatest though.

Greatest Female Figure skater would be Irina to me. Two olympic medals, Two world titles, 7 European titles plus a lot of other medals at World's and Euro's. And what about Maria Butyrskaya? Granted, no Olympic medals, but I think she was the first Russian lady to win a World's title, and also has three European titles to her credit, beside various other medals. Both ladies skated for a long time too. In that sense neither Zhenya nor Alina are there yet.

With the men, I find it more difficult. Number of Olympic medals definitely Plushenko. He also has 7 European Crowns (though not consecutive) and a few World titles to his credit. Yagudin has only one Olympic medal, but it is a gold and team competitions at the Olympics did not exist yet. And - to me but I am biased and a big fan - some really unforgettable programmes like Winter, Gladiator, Laurence of Arabia and The man in the Iron mask. With Plushenko I recall a lot of moves, steps, transitions and such but not much change in them through the years, though they were pretty original when he started off. I suppose I would have to give the crown to Plushenko - indeed because of his longevity which is truly admirable. I rather enjoyed their rivalry though, and have remained a Yagudin fan for life.

Last but not least: I do love all the history lessons I am getting here, and I agree with a poster above that 1m people is not a small city. Haha, we've got only one city that comes close, and the rest are all smaller and still called 'big cities' around here. .

Yes Slutskaya gets the title because of all her international medals. But Butyrskaya beats her when it comes to Nationals. Maria was on the podium for 11 consecutive years between 1992-2002 and won the title 6 times. An amazing record.

What amazing analysis Jane. Agree about Irina. Unreal record. But I forgot about Catherine The Great and I forgot Maria has such an awesome Rusnats record. Back then the Russian girls had a decade or so to develop their careers. Not so today. Most girls are done or past their prime by 20 and it's sad. The depth of Russian ladies talent has never happened before.

Longevity is great, but not everything. Some stars shine only for a short time, but are incredibly bright and lighten everything around. Like an explosion :-)

In that sense, for me the greatest of all time, or at least the most special, is Yulia. She is the reason I started watching figure skating and so did many other people. Her 2014 fs video has 11 million views, the most watched figure skating video on the Olympic channel. If you see the comments below, today people are either watching her again or are just discovering this whole new world and are asking silly questions. The fact that she retired so early and that we saw her at so few competitions, makes each skate even more special. My personal favorite is Rostelecom GP 2016, short program.

Great point about Yulia. She was magic and revolutionary for a few years. 11 million views and counting. I am some of those 11 million plus views. ;)

Oh yes, I love Yulia's skates. Just as I love Alina and Zhenia. But for me, following skaters through the years is one of the highlights of FS. Although obviously longevity is not everything, it is a great part of my enjoyment. So yes, I love quite a few skaters just because of that. Which is probably neither here nor there as this thread is about Russian ladies only (with a few diversions). I would really love it if there was a Russian lady I could follow for many years. But longevity is one of the reasons for Irina getting my vote.

Interesting fact about Irina Slutskaya. She was NOT selected for the world team in 1999 because she finished 4th at Nationals. It didn't matter that she had just won bronze at the GPF and took silver at Worlds and Europeans the year before (and was 5th at the Olympics). According to Wikipedia: "Slutskaya then considered leaving competition but decided to continue."

I would have to say Irina due to the fact that she made two comebacks, each time better and stronger than the last. She also still holds a few records and was the first lady ever to do a triple lutz-triple loop combo in competition.
