2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

I can’t be the only one who thinks Med still has a chance to win Olympic gold right ?? 🤔😁😁

Pretty sure you are the only one i think.
She may even medal, but quads aside, with all the girls who have a correct Lz and can do 3 of them across 2 programs...

No, of course not. Her best chance at an Olympic gold medal was in Korea, but it was not her only chance. She is still an elite skater, and now she's training in an environment that will allow her body to heal.

...that's why you should look at the entire season instead of one competition.

It is still an amazing result indeed, but we all know that if Alina skated as good as she did at the Olympics or the Europeans, she would have won Worlds easily.

I don't like how certain commentators (CBC among all, if i remember correctly Mark Hanretty from Eurosport, and also TSL) pushed the idea that some of these skaters can do certain jumps only with the arms...
The entire season in which she was an Olympic gold medalist as well as World Champion? Okay, let's look at that. Which Russian lady can say the same about this entire past season?

But Alina didn't skate well; she choked, and Osmond beat her.

So what? What does what announcers say have to do with whether Osmond is World Champion or not?

There is always hope and even if she finds herself outside looking in the ones who are ahead of her could bomb. Not really likely but there is always a chance...we all thought Liza was done and then she won a WC.

I'm definitely hoping for Evgenia to go to Beijing but we have to wait and see her progress at TCC season by season. If i see her qualifying for the national team against the juniors i'm gonna be really impressed. Alina beat her thanks to her 3lz-3lo and now almost every russian junior can do that combo + the technical difficulty in the ladies field keeps getting bigger. She had the upper hand thanks to her huge PCS scores but we've seen that judges are willing to give those big score to another russian girl who performs well so she can no longer rely on that alone. It's gonna be tough for her but she's a fighter and she's definitely not going down without a fight! :agree:

Someone please translate it, regardless of what she says!

Edit: this was meant to quote Sam's post, about Gubanova's live.

Med moving to Canada doesn't change the fact that she would still be a Russian vying for a chance at another title, either.

I'm not sure why you are pointing out this already discernible distinction to me. Kostner, for example, is an Italian who gets on podiums representing Italy training with Mishin in Russia and with Huth in Germany. Clearly, skaters look at opportunities to train in foreign countries for an environment that may better suit them. Orser is arguably the best current coach in the singles discipline. As you know, he has coached Hanyu to two consecutive Olympic golds, the first OGM to accomplish this since Dick Button, and Yuna Kim to her OGM in 2010. Having coached a skater to an OGM in singles in 3 consecutive games is quite an achievement. It doesn't change the fact that they're Japanese and Korean, respectively. But their training environment in Canada has no doubt helped them realize their potentials. Clearly, as others have pointed out throughout the off-season, Med has a long-term plan for her career and she has chosen to move overseas to Canada to pursue it.

A lot of tired stuff I also already knew about

Cool. I am sure you decided to write this sentence:

I'm looking forward to seeing her development with this move to Canada, under Tracy and Brian. :)

With the same amount of goodwill as everyone else who usually writes that sentence here has.

I did see you decided to ignore my response to your question there, though. Wonder why.

Realistically... small chances. But you‘re certainly not the only one HOPING that Med will get her Olympic Gold Medal. I‘m with you to. Medvedeva for OGM 2022!
In addition to the personal gold medal, there is also a team gold medal. I think it's quite possible for Zhenya to get the gold in the team.

Can someone please translate what she said? Why did she miss test skates?

Nastya said she doesn't know when her next competition will be, and she ignored the questions about whether she'll skate with the seniors (but why wouldn't she?)

She also said Buianova is just but not strict, and she likes Kostornaya more than Shcherbakova. As for the rest, nothing too interesting, imho.

I suggest you read the whole conversation and see how my question fits to the context of it. But let's not derail this thread with a back and forth exchange on our perceptions of each other's words ;).

More on topic discussion, I'm excited to see Med's programs, choreographed by David Wilson, especially her SP to Oranged Colored Sky. Does anyone know when she will debut her programs?

There are always chances and beliefs. In her 2015 interview Leonova was seriously talking about her 2018 Olympic podium plans. And at that point one could believe her. I remember her Chaplin SP and her lead over Liza in Obersdorf - Liza became a WC later on.

But seriously Evgenya had her biggest chance and she was within an inch to get it - the stars did not align for her that day.

Russian Test skates probably where the federation gives feedback to coaches and skaters on their programs. Break out the popcorn!

I truly believe Zhenya can win the Olympic gold in Beijing. 3.5 years is a long time in figure skating, but I feel she is up for the challenge.

But are we likely to see both programs if only the free is open to the public? Or at least that was my understanding - I hope I'm mistaken. Otherwise I suppose the first Senior B she does - Autumn Classic perhaps? - is the first time we'll to see her short.

Thanks! I missed your post due to another exchange I was having.

And to Tolstoj, how many of those 15-17 year olds finished on the podium in every single competition they competed in the entire season, with as many or a greater number of competitions as Osmond? There are reasons why she is currently ranked #1 by the ISU, made up of her consistent competitive results from the past two seasons, and she deserves to garner greater respect.

As for Alina's arm variations, I do like the arm variations used in her flip combo, especially the tano on the 3F. But imo, the wow factor diminishes with each additional jumping pass and competition.

To say I don't like the program I understand it, but way to much pantomiming? There is actually only one moment of pantomiming in the beginning and I find it very cool. she is 14 after all not 25. If someone 25 years old done that I would have said yes this is more for EX rather than competitive program. Or maybe I have the wrong definition of pantomiming.

I guess, I’m just worried they will take a skater of Sasha’s caliber and skill and not package her properly on the senior level...

Nobody in Russia is happy about the new rules, i kinda agree with them.

They made arms variations pointless, limit the second half, what's next? only 1 triple-triple? it really feels Figure Skating is regressing.

They’re not limiting the amount of quads ladies do so it’s not really regressing, it’s pushing the ladies to do harder elements in base value rather than execution
