2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Sometimes I doubt do all of us watch the same skaters during the same competition... :scratch2::think:

Agreed about Vasilieva. She was robbed last week. I feel like her scores were artificially suppressed to ensure Russians didn’t take 1st and 2nd to avoid an all Russian final. But her performance really should have won in my eyes given Alena’s mistakes.

I don't think she should have won, because Alena (IMO) is on a whole 'nother level. But I do think she was underscored.

I do feel like Vasilieva was underscored, but I definitely wouldn’t put her over Alena, nor would I put her over Yelim, to be honest. While her score was low, her placement seemed accurate.

Over both Yelim and Alena?

I don't know why, but Yelim's skating is boring to me. Alena, Alina, Sasha, Anna....I'm on the edge of my seat. Also Rika, Young You. But Yelim? I dunno, just does nothing for me. I prefer Vasilieva. (Even though her expression could use some work)

In no universe is Kanysheva with her equally tiny barely rotated jumps and snooze-worthy interpretation in any way better than consistency queen Tarusina, nor could she have beaten Kawabata today. Do not let the scores fool you. Overzealous panel in Austria, PCS undeserved. Vasilieva was robbed in comparison last week.

What makes you bad mouth Kanysheva like this? She is over two years younger than Tarusina, so her interpretation will come. And her jumps are actually big and have the best technique of a Russian junior. But I love Tarusina as well. This is the Russian Ladies thread anyway...I’m all for supporting them all.

So uh.... has anyone seen the video of Tarakanova's quad toe? I must say I am pleasantly surprised.

I am not convinced, since she is not even landing it (if she was, they would have published a clean-ish one). Just way too far from being usable in competition so far.

I agree that Yelim does not look so dynamic. But she still deserves the medals she got so far. Vasilieva was good, but not to the point getting a better placement.

Can I just say, as somebody who is also heavily involved in ballet and dance, as much as I currently love Kamila I am not putting ANY money on her lasting more than a couple of years. She has The Leg™ and I know exactly what that leads to. Looks very good on a prepubescent 12 year old but it inevitably means they have wide set hips and will naturally become very bottom heavy seemingly overnight as soon as puberty hits. It's very common in dance, less so in figure skating, but Polina Edmunds is a good example of it.

This isn’t really a fair assumption. I grew up on a contemporary dance team and we pretty much all had The Leg from a young age (if you mean The Leg as in practising leg extensions a lot), and now that we’re all a little older, some of us have become bottom-heavy with wide-set hips but most of us haven’t. I’m turning 17 and I still look like a stick. One of my dance friends is nearly 22 and still looks like a stick.

Of course, it’s possible that Kamila could become bottom-heavy as she grows, but I don’t think it’s fair to assume that just because she has good flexibility and control in her legs. If anything, The Leg should spark concerns about injury, not puberty.

Maybe I misunderstood but I interpreted tinybluemoon's comments as being about the structure of the hip not about Kamila's general flexibility. I.e. they are saying Kamila has a great range of motion/beautiful easy extensions BUT that in a number of cases they have observed this kind of extension/flexibility in young girls is actually a sign that they probably have relatively wide-set hips - something which is not great for figure skating - and which only becomes physically apparent once they enter puberty.

Personally I'm not sure if this is true, for example Alina Somova has this type of easy leg extension (even more extreme that Kamila's) but she certainly did not become bottom heavy after puberty.

This is a fan video. The rotation looks pretty good. Apparently she did land one without falling but I don’t know if that was true or not. Someone said it on Twitter

If she cannot land it most of the time, it's no good for competition. Not sure about rotation, but it looks she managed to fall on her butt AND then hit her knee in the fall. Which could be cause problems in competition. I mean, what good is -5 GOE (and fall deduction quad), when it can only cause problems. Going to the skate knowing it is 90% chance of splatting on a difficult jump... no good, imho.

Gutted for Tarakanova in her SP performance, however I think this is my favourite SP of the season so far, I simply adore the music and the way Ana portrays it.

I dont think anyone is suggesting she put it in her program yet only that it looks promising and that maby she will land one clean in the future. And praticing a quad should indicate all of her tripples are solid again after her sickness and coaching change over the summer.
