2018-19 U.S. Ladies' figure skating

I thought Kaitlyn Nguyen's technique was not good to start with, mostly relying on her super narrow frame for fast rotation. I remember seeing Angelina Huang once at last year's JGP event. Lots of lovely quality. Maybe she has better plans than skating?

i hope Hanna Harrell get JW spot and do well, if she want to be full time senior and get a GP its a nice chance to get new SB. As much as i want Ting in JW if she does not get the spot i won't be that mad since she will have no problem getting GP through top 24 SB placement next season.

I find it interesting and it's not directed at you specifically that when calculating the US ladies chances that there is always the assumption that one of the Korea ladies is automatically above them. Yet we have at least 3 US ladies Ting, Mariah and Bradie who have all scored above the best Korean competitors. According to the ISU seasons best no non Russian or Japanese skater has outscored Bradie this season internationally and only Leona Hendrixx and Elizabet Tursynbaeva. One of those being early summer scores which they have yet to acheive again during the season at a competition where the scores ran very high. The korean skaters are much further down the list. Not sure who they are sending to worlds.

All in all I think their odds are good and there really is no one on the international scene right now who is completely unbeateable.

It's Eunsoo Lim. And the ONLY reason I would place her below Tennell in terms of potential is that she's from the Korean Fed instead of the big four. Sorry. She medaled at a GP event, which Bell couldn't do.

I said their main competitors anyway. They could beat her. Or they could not.

I would say we now have a few medal contenders at the Grand Prix and Junior Grand Prix:
- If Ting goes clean, then she can probably grab one or two
- If Bradie gets ideal assignments, she can grab one, MAYBE two
- If Hanna lands her 3A and goes clean, she can grab one, but I don’t see her getting 2
- If Alysa improves her technique and lands everything, she can grab two and a trip to the Final
- We have a dark horse with Audrey Shin who could probably grab a Bronze if she doesn’t let her nerves get to her

Hanna has only said she’s working on 3a. Not that she has it or that it’s even close. I think she can medal without 3a anyways, depending on her assignment. But in this prediction is she on the JGP or Senior?

She said that she wants to include it next season, so maybe she already has it down? I’m not sure. I heard she’s been practicing Quads and the 3A for awhile now, and considering how high she jumps and the distance she gets, I wouldn’t be surprised if she already has a good, but maybe not consistent, 3A. Her main goal was to be consistent this season and she was the only Junior lady this season to have completed her programs during the tests and summer comps. without falling.

Does a lady now have to have a 3a just to medal on the JGP? Or would she be making up for other flaws with the 3A? (I just don’t have time to follow juniors much, wish I did).

Eunsoo medaled at a GP event (Rostelecom) because the level of competition was worse than both of Mariah’s...not because she actually skated better than Mariah during the GP season. Mariah actually beat Eunsoo in a GP this season. But yes I also believe that Eunsoo could be tough for both Mariah and Bradie..

Not necessarily. However, it will help to fight against Eteri’s upcoming Juniors who might or might not have Quads.

Also yes I know Mariah’s not going to be world medalist anytime soon, but I still think people underrate her. If she skated her free in Skate Canada like she did at NHK she would have gotten bronze. Even with a lack of a solid and consistent triple-triple, Mariah’s still not someone to ignore.

All the quadsters should be moving out of Juniors and into senior. Although there is a chance that others who have been attempting them and or rumored to be working on 3a (from more than just Russia) will remain on JGP.

Alysa is going to need to improve on her presentation. As the tech levels have gone up in recent seasons so too has the level of performances on the JGP. Tech will get you you into the discussion but the top skaters are all strong enough that it’s the presentation that sets them apart. Look how far Alena Kostornaya has gone without a quad or 3a.

If she can stay consistent though she can use a similar formula to US Nats and expect to have success the likes of which we haven’t seen from an American on JGP since ....ummm.......maybe Gracie?

We’ll see the strength of Eteri’s upcoming Juniors during the Russian Junior Championships which is next week. As for Alysa, I hope she doesn’t push that Quad too much. Having 3 consistent 3A’s that she can carry into adulthood is much more valuable than having a 4Lz with a 50% chance of landing it every time. Hopefully we can also see Hanna’s 3A and Ting’s Quad soon.

I was referring to Starr picking up a host selection - as injuries wear on throughout the season, they'll be looking for lower tier skaters. As I said, she is popular and has crowd-pleasing programs. And she won't be a threat to local talent.

It is time for USA to see an African American skater on the podium representing our country. Other countries all over the world recognize equality better.

Medals are only part of the story. Eunsoo has a reliable 3-3.

I'm uncertain exactly what you mean. If you are saying it would be great to have an AA skater do well enough to make a podium, I don't necessarily disagree, although I try very hard to live a color-blind life.

If you're saying that Starr should be some sort of affirmative action selection to a podium or should receive international assignments on the basis of her skin color, then I could not disagree more.

I don’t think the Fed has been actively working to have their podium consist of a specific ethnic background. Debi Thomas was the national champion in the 80’s!

I think the main issue is that 1. The sport itself is expensive and therefore already limiting to anyone regardless of race that does not come from an socioeconomic background that can support the high costs of becoming an elite skater. 2. And more importantly is that there haven’t been many African American skaters winning. It’s a vicious cycle but I think when you see a skater at that top that “looks” like you, you can relate more and personify that skater.

I have so much respect for Starr and the road she is paving for herself. She has been very lucky to have a lot of international opportunities both on the junior and senior level but I feel like the fate of her podium placement solely lies in her hands (ie: improving tech and skating skills).

I think it's best to ignore this poster. That post looks instigative.

She’s also reliably scored slightly less than Mariah...which is really what matters at the end of the day at Worlds. She’s a threat but I wouldn’t exactly say that she’s for sure going to beat Mariah at competition.
