I can't answer that, but I do remember that Sima was fresh off winning Warsaw Cup:

I don't know if that makes any difference, though I do seem to recall winning a Challenger helps, but at least it gives one score that was very current.

I really hope it’s Sima. She has such good momentum now and has really improved with Turenko, versus Leonova, who has stagnated

I thought the WS and SB lists used for GP assignments were always the ones from the end of the previous season...?

Ok...so then any success you have during the current season doesn’t count for your considerations. You may be correct. I honestly don’t know. Im fairly certain that they sometimes use current WS at big events to determine SP starting order so I guess I assumed they would look at the current ranking to determine substitutions too.. That’s why I thought it would be hard to track down her ranking (or anyone’s) a random time from last season.
Only if you win a challenger series. Then your added onto the substitution list. Otherwise everything achieved this season affects your GP selection next season. It's why was so angry that Gubanova wasn't sent to JW. If she had, she'd have a larger SB and be eligible for a GP spot. Hopefully she gets some CS so she can get good SB for next season.

Eunsoo would be ideal for Skate America. She already trains in the USA and she already has one GP. But is that spot automatically going to an American lady, if any? I don't quite remember how host pick rules work.
There's already 3 ladies at SkAm (Starr, Bradie and Megan) so there can be any more. Eunsoo would be an ideal pick, but technically USFS has no obligation to replace Elena. But Raf already has several students at Skam, so it would be an easy replacement.
The only issue with Eunsoo is that Skate America has already skipped her once. She was a perfect invitation before. She trains in California. She was at the top of the list. She's with Raf who has to come anyway because of Nathan. They could have selected her for SA earlier instead of Chartrand, and they went with Chartrand from farther down in the standings. If they have skipped Eunsoo once because she is a threat, they are likely to do it again.
But fingers crossed anyway because I would REALLY like to see her compete live!

Going with Alaine over Eunsoo could also have been part of the dealmaking between the host federations. Canada might have asked for it in exchange for other considerations, whereas Korea just has to take whatever’s on offer.

I am almost positive Russians need a visa to come to the US and at this point there may not be enough time for a replacement skater from Russia to get one, unless one of them already has one. Although, I am not sure how long they last once issued.
Sima got one or had one on very short notice last year. I think skaters prepare themselves for these situations if they are on the sub list.

Both Sakhanovich and Leonova were at last year's Skate America but I'm not sure either whether their visas are still valid or could be easily renewed.
