2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

I have zero insider knowledge, but anyone else think we might see a triple axel from Sasha next weekend?

I’m thinking maybe she will put the 4F in. She mentioned it in an interview with the Olympic channel and also Anna mentioned the possibility of putting it in her program in the future. I’m sure Sasha wants to be the first to do the 4F in competition!

Anna has good program layout for another quad (or triple axel), she does her 2 quad passes, a light choreographic sequence and then 2 consecutive double axels. If she's reasonably consistent on another quad (especially if she keeps getting dinged for an unclear edge) it would be good points to do her 2 quad lutz passes, a breather in the choreographic sequence and then switch the first double axel for a quad.

I noticed that, too. It looked to me like the first double Axel was a clear place-holder for a triple Axel one of these days.

About the edge calls on her two quad Lutzes, in the United States the ABC TV coverage aired today and gave much better views (in my opinion) than any of the on-line vids. The first one (combo) looked fine in real time. But on the slow-motion replay, from a better angle, the ! was quite evident, and a stricter panel could even have called an "e."

The solo 4Lz looked clean as a whistle, to me -- maybe a tiny last-second wobble. Tara Lipinski commentating gushed, "That's TWO QUAD LUTZES -- I can't even believe I'm saying those words!"

I have no problem with her Lz being called as ! in that competition (though i think is problematic to call literally all of them as the same). What is more problematic to me is that exactly the same Alina's Lz is called as e, and exactly the same Alyona Lz is called as clean. I won't comment on other non-Russians skaters here, even i'm more commenting on the judging system than the skaters, so  Acording to the GOE we saw in the tech box in real time, panel of judges saw all those Lzs as the same (and more/less fine ones, comparing to Kaori's Lz for example which was judged with no positive GOE in real time). But tech panel decided to review just some of them! If you want to be fair, than you need to review all of them, or none of them.

Plus given that she and Trusova's first element is their double axel in the SP suggests to me that they are practicing for it to be a triple axel and it wouldn't surprise me to see 1 of them popping off a triple axel before the season is over.

The US coverage was NBC (wishful thinking for ABC to be the broadcaster again), I was relatively pleased with the coverage - the commentators were mostly positive towards the three new Russian seniors that are dominating figure skating right now - and they even acknowledged that the pairs discipline still exists!

Liza will possibly attend golden spin, she said so herself.

I believe Daniil even talked about Anna going somewhere before the GPF.

Why was it deleted twice? El Henry is for you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZQ3MZVmENM Why was it deleted twice? Or did I write in Russian? El Henry is for you. I would like to know your opinion....

Unfortunately this particular video is geoblocked for me. It was labeled as Kamila Valieva. I do not read Russian, so I don't know what program.

I did go back and rewatch Kamila's LP this year. She has speed and drama and commits to the movements that were given her. I think she may like being on the ice (expressing joy on the ice is a real plus for me). Unfortunately, Exogenesis will always be associated with Jeremy Abbott for me, and of course, Kamila at 13 cannot be expected to compare in depth of expression and commitment with Jeremy at his best. I look forward to her growing into programs like this one, to see what she can bring when she has had more experience.

Now, that is all the junior ladies I am going to watch until JGP.;) I think I've said on this Forum, I'm afraid I just don't follow the junior ladies. If I watch a junior Russian skater, it will be Andrei Kutovoi:luv17:

To each his/her own, but is there a reason for this? If everyone is raving about a specific performance, will you purposely stop yourself from going and watching it? Is there a reason to limit yourself to one Russian junior skater? Of course, you can watch whatever you want, but I don't see a reason to purposely avoid watching a certain category of skater (and then announce that you avoid this category of skater on a thread dedicated to them :) ).

She skated clean! I did not expect that from her considering her rough showings on previous competitions. But that wasn’t enough to make the podium.

Thanks. Other than Anna it doesn't sound like the silver or bronze medalist at China did anything special so it's disappointing that Sofia did not contend for medal there. I wonder if SS can learn a quad or triple axel. She may very well be small enough to do so. Maybe.

My favorite discipline, by a country mile, is the men. My viewing of ladies' skating overall is limited, particularly in comparison to the men. And 99% of that is senior ladies. I only have so much time in the day:biggrin:

So, since I only have so much skating watching time, I am afraid I probably miss much good skating, and I do not watch the junior ladies. I am not watching Russian junior ladies, American junior ladies, (I have seen Alysa Liu maybe three times? Only because she skates senior Nats and, being in America, it is easier to access American skaters). I am not watching Japanese junior ladies, I am not watching Korean junior ladies.

I tried to watch this particular video as a courtesy to NordStream. I can dope out Cyrillic names, due mostly to my knowledge of Ancient Greek and the faint similarity of the letters, but I don't know the program and I really can't go searching.

I did my best.:)

I don't want to knock Sofia, but she's recently gone through some puberty growth. Her jumps are also uncharacteristically small for a Mishin jumper. At CoC, they looked barely eked out, so I doubt a quad or triple axel are likely anytime soon.

It would not surprise at all, she knows that in Rostelecom he will have the weakest competition, to all of them wins with triple singles, she does not need a quad. So you can afford to experiment with 3A and 4F. Skating cleanwe will see the first ladie skater win a GP event with more than 50 points of difference over the second.

Then again, the whole concept of time and ease of reviews will pop up. The tech panel probably only triage and review those that look odd in real time or those ultra big elements e.g. quads or....horrors, those with a reputation for edge issues. That is the current reality which leads to inconsistency in strictness and causing fans / spectators alike to get confused and upset. Just hope some new fangled rotation technology device comes along soon for judges, callers and spectators to be able to objectively see the actual degree of revolutions performed in the air. It will create new avenues for fans to cry foul over though....
