2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Wow kinda breaks my heart to read what some of you are saying about Maya. I know she had a rough skate, but was she really that bad? Funny thing is, when I watched the event live today I actually thought in the moment that Maya was more of a pleasure to watch than Kamila. I don't really follow Maya too much so she was a nice surprise for me despite the mistakes. I guess I was watching something different than all of you...

I hope she gets another JGP, I can see the potential. Clearly both girls had some issues the past two days, probably due to nerves. It was sad to see them upset, but I hope they are able to grow from it and continue to fight, if given the opportunity (Maya). Bravo to Kamila on a flawless quad and a deserved win and to Maya for medalling and winning the short. I look forward to watching them both again and seeing the improvements I know they are capable of!

I don't. I mean I'd love for her to get more chances. But if she were to get another chance, it'd mean that one of the other girls would have to implode. Because for Maiia to get a second assignment, one girl would have to either place 4th or place 3rd with a score below 179, and in this field, it'd be a disaster for them. Especially since Tarakanova, Sinitsyna, Vasilieva, and Tarusina should go senior next season if they do well this year. And a 179 for a Russian lady is not doing well, and definitely not enough for a GP (or for the fed to submit them).

What?

P.S. But only +3 for her spins looks like a crime for me. All her spins should be in +4+5 zone.

It might be that her flexibility works against her here. I think some judges are afraid that the sport might develop into super flexible acrobatics, so they don't appreciate her spins because of that.

The usual ISU age discrimination against juniors, otherwise Valiyeva would have bested all but a handful of seniors. And there is no ground whatsoever in ISU rules to discriminate against skaters by age or reputation, none!
You'll see 'worse' spins in the seniors getting 'higher' GOE and still those judges proclaim they judge only the performance at hand, evenly and fairly.

Jontor might have a point, but then it is the same as with quads: do you oppose progress or not, do you appreciate certain qualities in a skater or not?
There is no way you can 'objectivy' these criteria in a rule book. So the judges use GOE as a ranking slider once they've run out of deductions on technical merit.

I think Kamila's GOE will rise quickly. It's her first JGP and she was already getting -3 instead of the mandatory -5 for falls. By the time JWC comes around I'll be very surprised if her spin GOE hasn't risen to +5.

Edit: Wait, I just looked at the protocol and J5 (the one judge who gave Kamila two 3s on spins) just isn't acting right...they also gave a 3 to another girl's invalidated spin, what the hell?

I don't know why there is so much hate on Maya. I feel for those russian ladies or girls. Such scrutiny. It wasn't a great competition for her but she still did win bronze. I should be so lucky. But with such depth she wouldn't come to mind as one of the Russian best right now.

Judges are a bit hesitant to give high PCS and GOE for skaters. The 3A kind of forced them to expand their scoring range last year, but juniors are still not treated equally.Or maybe some judges indeed did not like Kamila's extreme flexibility. But for me, her spins are the best in the field, junior or senior. Also, it's bit weird that Kamila didn't get -5 GOE on her fall, but that's probably because she kind of held her landing before falling.

I don't get why people feel the need to be so harsh about some skaters, especially when they're so young. Apart from a couple of Russian competitions last year I didn't even see Maya compete before, so it's not like I'm a big fan, but it was really sad to see her so heartbroken and disappointed.
Of course, it's okay to point out a skater's mistakes and to have preferences for others, but to declare, after just one competition, then someone is awful and shouldn't even be with a certain coach is a little mean. She was recently injured, surely she was nervous, it was her first JGP; the majority of skaters have had a meltdown at least one time in the history of their competitions.
As for her style or her lines, honestly they're not really my cup of tea and there are things I would prefer to be different, but I guess there's time for her to grow and mature. Surely the coaching team will work with her to see what went wrong here and to help her.
I don't know if Maya will get another JGP assignment, considering the level of the other Russian skaters, but I think is very severe to deem her done after just this one competition.

Probably, since she crashed to the ice a lot later since her landing, the combination was considered completed but badly executed? That combo proved to be the 'stumbling block' for many skaters.

It's a mystery how can someone with such a beautiful quad struggle with some triples lol. Goes to show that nothing is given in this sport.

So, next week, it’s Sinitsina vs. Tarakanova in terms of Russian juniors? I honestly can’t say who’ll come out on top. Both were given so-so PCS last season and neither seems to be a federation favorite. I think they are pretty much on an even playing field.

Based on test skates, I think Sinitsina has the upper hand between the two, but of course there isn't as huge gap like between Maya and Kamila. I'm very curious how it plays out with them and Alyssa... The prospect of having a JGP where the Russian girls won't have a clear lead on everyone else is pretty exciting, tbh  I love me some actual competition. Seoyeong Wi was a very nice surprise this week for the same reason.

Exactly. FFKKR seemed to protect Valiyeva, just like USFS seem to protect Liu. Next week will be very interesting for sure. Hopefully the Russians arrive rested or pre-adapted to the time difference. Much is at stake for both Anastasiya and Kseniya. Every little detail in their preparation counts, yet we know very little about #TeamPanova ...

About Maya and given the known fact that in Russian FS only golden medals count, she’ll be very disappointed with herself. Not about her scores or placement, but over the fact she’s fallen twice.
This is what grieves her most, and it is now Gleikhengauz’ duty to pick her up and settle her.
Even if she ends up without a second JGP qualifier, she should leave this all behind and concentrate on events to come.
The race to JGPF is far from run, other Russian skaters still have to prove themselves.

Maya Khromykh is young and full of promise and a worthy member of Khrustalniy’s top group.

Every athlete wants to prove himself but for Russian figure skaters and gymnasts the bar is set so much higher.

I sort of missed those "I like Medvedeva (Zagitova, etc.) but". I hope to see a lot of those this season because it will mean that Russian girls keep winning.
Seriously though, what we read these last 2 days is just a tiny scratch on the surface compared to what we'll be reading 2 weeks from now [emoji28]

I wonder what Maiia and Kamila will skate for Gala. Kamila repeats only SP, so she could skate to Spartacus. Maiia repeats both programs, so taking one from last season is not an option. Maybe Daniil created new programs for them? The 3A only got new galas before JWC19, so it's not usual practice for their coaches to choreograph galas for juniors.

Maybe someone can help me find the answer to the question - why don't the judges rate Camila's bilman and i-spin to the maximum? In my opinion they are perfect. Or is someone doing it even better? Or does she travel a lot? I do not see any errors.
But one judge rated 4T at +5. Handsome man.

what are talking about? the protocoll is full of 4s and some 5s for her spins, come on

Courchevel seems like a really beautiful place for holidays but it does take quite a lot of energy from the skaters to get through their programs. It was obvious that everyone struggled towards the end of their long programs to get those jumps airborne and spins going.

Are you seriously ? I see 5 ratings of +3 and 6 ratings of +5 ( For the last two spins, these are 4 and 2, respectively). Judges tend to rate her rotation as average as well as excellent. I don’t understand how it can be only +3. I asked.

Do you know me personally? No then don't go suggesting I have something against Russian girls... geez getting triggered by nothing

#TeamTutberidzeForProgress has their work cut out for themselves also.
Going for the big solo skills is one thing, they should not forget the other high scoring elements, combinations and cascades.

Plenty of time remains for Valiyeva to improve herself in this before her second start. The home event for her, where the pressure on her will be several orders of magnitude above what it was at Courchevel.
Chelyabinsk is sold out, but perhaps the support of her Russian fans will elevate Kamila?
