2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

That dress was ugly. Like something a little kid would wear for a birthday party or something. Maybe she can "accidentally" spill something over it, rip it, set it on fire, forget it in Lake Placid, lose the luggage?

You can dislike Nastya's skating but can we not be unkind about her dress--she has publicly said she's needs money to fund her skating career and yet you are still surprised that her costumes aren't pretty enough. I'm sorry she can't afford Olga but unless you want to donate money to her gofundme which has raised only 1/8 of what she needs these costumes are the best that she can get. The 'ugly' dress already impacts her pcs probably so can we not judge her for the fact she prioritises spending money on her skating then on getting pretty dresses when she is already being judged by the judges for it. On this note choreo--she was probably meant to go to the US like Sinitsyna, Shabs and Kanysheva have to get Kanaeva choreography probably for her Frieda program but she couldn't afford to go. We can dislike her choreography and costume but they are doing the best they can within the limitations they have and rightly so she's already getting punished for it--we don't need to attack her for this

Also just because a skater doesn't have a pretty smile or look suitably serious and contemplative doesn't mean that she's not interpreting the music or performing--watch her arms and how she actually responds to the music with her body not just her face. She changes speed with ease as the music swells and builds responding to it in a way most skater can't and she does that here. In Frida and the first half of her short at least she is doing all of these things and she has the presence and maturity.

Otherwise yes this wasn't a good competition for her but yes she was marked harshly

The scoring this week is in complete contrast to last week--how is her score equal to Khromykh when Khromykh had such a disaster skate. Yes maybe she's not a massive emoter but at least she wasn't crying during her program and yet she still got three more points in PCS then Nastya.

She was the only skater to get a level four in the short and yet she got a level 2 in the free skate?? the same spin she's always done and has received a level four gets a level 2. Her flip which has never received an ! in her junior international career for good reason gets an !. Her euler triple sal which was no more under than Alysa's (to compare identical jumping passes) gets called under and Alysa's doesn't somehow.

I don't think she should have beaten Yeonjeong because of the short but I do think her score should have been at least a point or two higher easily--her free skate to me deserved at least 125 and in this respect she was robbed because of this she may not get a second assignment.

I'm sorry but of all times I've seen Nastya compete, these 2 programs were with as little emotion as there can be, aka nothing, nada, blank. I didn't see any interpretation really. But let's not forget that IN is only 1 part of the PCS.

Between the two yes, since they both got the bronze, but Maya is that little higher on the season best total score.

I'm not sure if Russ Fed will utilize this criteria ... Tarakova has more experience ... and had a though JGP

I agree ... The dress is original ( beautifull or confuse that is other discussion)... She skate serious ( i don't see anyome skate to this music with a smile becuase the music don't ask for a smile) ... I don't think that alysa program's are better or is good expressing the music ... she just smile .... and in the levels sorry but i don't get different ... for me alysa is a good jumper and spiner but her programs and expression are empty (she just smile during the program)....

And I like tarakova programs and she doesn't so awkward with her body if weren't for the SP ( kamilieva fall too) ...

Nastya's programs unfortunately didn't reveal her unique energy and emotions. 2 years ago she delivered beautiful programs at JGPF with components not much worse than those of Kostornaia or Trusova. The judges were indeed stingy compared to Courchevel where Khromykh got very high components with multiple mistakes and not really a good program in general. If I had to choose which one of these two would get a second event, I'd go for Nastya with no doubts. However, there are still 2-3 events that will be important to decide who gets a second event and a chance to qualify to JGPF.

I quite enjoyed Nastya's skating today! I mean she didn't have a lot of expression, but her power and speed are amazing! I think she might be the fastest skater I've seen and her jumps are huge.

As for her costumes, the main problem with them are they're kind of busy - the FS one for example has a lot going on (although someone mentioned in the Ladies FS thread that it seems to be based on a painting, not sure which one, but if so that makes more sense), but I quite liked the cut of them, they're different from the usual floaty dresses.

More importantly, she seemed happy with her skate today! She's very hard on herself, so I was really pleased to see a smile on her face at the end of her skate. I do hope she gets a second spot and a chance to make the JGP final.

"Kamilieva" what a cute word
Anyway...as a fan of figure skating with soft spot for few russian skaters, Im glad for Alysa, Seoyeon Ji and Yeonjeong Park. Russian girls havent rivals for too long, they need this young pikes. I hope that same as their success kicked US/Korea/Japan girls and training stuff to work more, now it will kick girls like Kamila, Maya, Sofia Akatieva and many others to work even more and RFFKKR to modernized their training methods.

Yes or if they want to encourage multiple groups to achieve success (since regardless Eteri already has arguargbly the best russian junior girl), they could choose Tarakanova.

But honestly and looking at the past seasons, Rus Fed doesn't really care about all these things, they want more skaters at JGPF, and given Tutberidze's most consistent track record, i can see them choosing Khromykh because she may have more chances to win the next event. (depending where they send her)

Still in my opinion i like both but Tarakanova is slightly better, she deserves better programs, the packaging she had with Plushenko last season was nicer.

I believe her dress to be based on some outfit or outfits from the movie .. Frida.

Frida, the Mexican Artist, .. had a garish dress sense.

I'm wondering if the fact, that the dress reflects the style(s) of the movie, .. is lost on the Judges.

.. that being said, .. it's not a Program that goes well with Anastasia. She's a powerful skater, and this program doesn't allow her to feel, nor show, that.

If Tarusina is injured and Frolova isn't in the mix. Isn't there enough spots for everyone to get two assignments??
Valieva +1, Khromykh +1, Tarakanova +1, Vasilieva +2, Sinitsyna +2, Usacheva +2, Kanysheva +2 = +11 total.
Am I forgetting anyone?

That would make sense. We may still see 5 Russians in the final then. Was hoping for 6 though

You're not forgetting anyone, but we need to wait and see how Frolova ranks. I don't expect her to win or anything, but the way things have been going so far we can't be sure who gets assigned.

I know that Nastya has a very slightly smaller total score compared to Maya, but if it came down to it I think I'd give it to Nastya. If she were at Courchevel I think she'd come on top (very close though).

I think this is probably a bit too optimistic tbh, but you never know, 5 events to go :D

Realistically, Russia can get 2-5 spots at JGPF. So far I can only predict that Kamila and Alysa will be there. There are 5 events left and we don't know the situation of many juniors. There are lots of strong Korean juniors who may get their medals and tickets to GPF. At the same time, girls like Usacheva or Khromykh don't have a lot of international experience and Kanysheva has changed her coach, so they may surprise us in some way.

Is it confirmed who’ll be at jgp Riga this week? Kanysheva and Usacheva, or a different girl?

Also, any word on Nugumanova? It was so hard to see her so sad in the kiss-and-cry at last year’s nationals; she thought she’d done so well, but when she saw her score, she covered her face with her hand and looked about to cry.

I don't think the team for Riga will be changed. Some changes were already made but Latvia's event wasn't among them.
Nugumanova has moved to Rukavitsin, she'll train here together with Gubanova.

About upcoming test skates: it's really cool that we'll get not only good quality broadcasts (not that I didn't enjoy Tuktik's livestream last year), but also a lot of content about girls. Everything from Junior Test skates was posted on YouTube, hopefully that will be the case with seniors as well.

This is the Russian test skates week. I am going there both days and I shall write live reports. Somehow, the thread is in Summer competitions section so that I will post there. The good news is that it does not need subscription.

Do we know who will be there already? All skaters who got a GP event? Or only those on the Senior National Team/Reserve team? Both? Sorry if the question was already asked. :) Anyway, the week has finally come. So excited to see all the girls skate again this weekend.

I guess they are obliged to participate to that joke called test skates but I would preferred they didn’t.
