2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Even if she doesn't have a good senior season, still she will be the quad queen. For any of the 4A to make the team will be difficult. Just to be clear I didn't make any assessment on how the season will go.

Yes .. because she will try to land in every competition ... she will not play safe because she isn't that kind ... If you ask her land a 4 or win with a safe 3 ... she will try to land a 4

Now that the segment is over...

- I'm really happy that Daria mostly held it together and won silver here, even though she was looking for gold and probably would've had it without the mistake on the toe. She's struggled with nerves, and was much better here than in the past. Her lutz edge also looks to be improving! And with a silver medal she still has a good shot at the final

- Maya had a much better event than Courchevel, showing that she's improving over time! Her nerves look to be better controlled than at test skates and JGP Courchevel, so the competition experience is helping.

- Some of the GOE looked suspect to me (was Maya's second error really worth -1.67 GOE? Especially considering the GOE that other errors get overall) but I think the placements are fair. It's not over now - with a silver, Daria can still make the final. Alysa and Haein will most likely make the final as well, but Daria, Kamila, Alyona, and Ksenia can all join them. So there's still a chance for 3-4 ladies to make the final. It's not as many as last year but this is a rebuilding year. Next year, Maya, Daria, and all the others will be seasoned veterans of international competition, and Maya can claim her first win  like Haein did today. Daria still has a shot in Egna, though she will face Kanysheva.

I don’t even know man....

It seems like Maya was called up at the last minute when Kanysheva withdrew when she likely was not expecting to even be given a second assignment. That could not have been easy for her.

There better be a really good reason that Sinitsyna could not skate here.

I want Anna Tarusina.

Russian girls in the SB list after 3 (of 30) events

2(2). Kamila Valieva 200.71
4(-). Daria Usacheva 194.40
7(5). Maiia Khromykh 190.73
9(6). Anastasia Tarakanova 179.29

It is just nerves, not the end of the world.
Let‘s not forget how young and inexperienced these girls are.
Alina, Rika, Evgenia - all of them made mistakes in JGP and they still have great carriers.
The 3A spoiled us last season and we tend to forget that the junior years are a learning period, not a „kill them all“ mode :-) So, I am not worried about Maya and Daria; they have plenty of time to build character and win their competitions.

Well, isn't this JPG season full of surprises

I really cannot wait to see how these girls develop both this season and the next. I really enjoyed Daria in particular; a clean performance by her would be awesome!

Thinking things through here...

Route to the final

Competitors:
Alysa Liu: With a gold already in Lake Placid, any medal at Gdansk will put her in the final
Haein Lee: With a gold already in Riga, any medal at Zagreb will put her in the final

Russians:
Kamila Valieva: With a gold already in Courchevel, any medal in Chelyabinsk will put her in the final
Daria Usacheva: With a silver already in Riga, a gold or silver medal in her second assignment (Egna?) will put her in the final
Ksenia Sinitsyna: Still to skate, but looks to be a favorite for silver in Chelyabinsk, so a second silver or a gold in her second assignment will put her in the final
Alyona Kanysheva: Still to skate, and status unknown, but earned two silvers last year. Repeating that performance would put her in the final.
Anastasia Tarakanova: With a bronze already in Lake Placid, a gold medal in Zagreb would put in the final
Viktoria Vasilieva/Anna Frolova: Still to skate, but likely to get anywhere from 2nd-5th place in their event. Earning a silver medal would get them a second assignment most likely, and another silver would put them in the final.

Maya Kromykh: appears to be out, with a bronze medal from Courchevel and a fourth place from Riga :(

I was surprised too. I don't think it would have changed something if the negative GOE would have been smaller but it seemed to me that it was hard when Matsuike received only -0.25 on her combo mistake

But as I've said, the final standings would probably be unaffected still.

I thought Haein deserved the win for being the cleanest and she was so good. But Daria is one of my new favorites. The way she moves is so beautiful and expressive. The beginning of her program today was just stunning. She has so much potential.

I would love to see Daria in the final! With a silver and 194 points, that seems like she has a good chance of making the final. She just has to skate well at her next event and then she can definitely make the final.

I know everyone has been saying Daria can improve her facial expressions. There was a bit of a disconnect because she is so expressive with her body. But honestly it doesn't even matter to me because she connects to the music wonderfully. And I think her face just doesn't show expression much. I noticed that during the ceremony and after.

Too bad for Maiia. She had a great opportunity to help secure herself for the final. But not even on the podium, she is out of JPGF for sure.

Daria still has a very good chance for the final! She's got a silver and her score isn't bad at all (It's actually pretty good) and she will likely have lost a bit of the nerves she got from it being her first international competition. I like her lines and musicality. She's emotional too. I'm not a fan of both her programs but she's got a lot of potential and is overall just a beautiful skater.

Too bad for Maiia, though. But she fought for everything today. She did both combinations in the second half and that 3Lz+3T was very beautiful. She needs a bit more experience but I think she will come back strongly for Nationals and the second half of the season.

IMO Daria's expressiveness can give a good run for their money to a lot of skaters.

Dar'ya to me appears to be a very bright girl, her face stays composed, she isn't a little girl anymore, but one can sort of see the gears in her head spinning, digesting all these conflicting thoughts, feelings, emotions.

I wrote this in the competition thread:
"Still in awe over Dar'ya presentation of the image, esp in the beginning, where she portrayed a nervous girl searching for her lost love, parting the crowd, gazing, running after a glimpse of him. Even the facial expressions matched the image, in this image you don't smile, you are anxious and afraid."

No problems with Haenin winning, her routine was sublime too. As was Maya's. These three girls stood out above the rest.

I feel like the assigning of JGPF has been kind of a mess this year :( I mean it was unpredictable. With Tarakanova being the sole assignment because of Visas at Lake Placid, and her not having her best skate for 3rd place.

And Maiia being lucky to receive a second assignment. I mean, Sinitsyna last year placed 3rd and didn't get a 2nd assignment right? There are so many limited assignments for such a crowded field. Maiia was gifted another opportunity and she didn't finish on podium, effectively ending her chances at JGPF.

Maiia had great opportunities to win both her events too, or at least silver. Courchevel she had a head start on Kamila of 5 points from SP. And Kamila, although her quad was amazing, had a fall as well. If Maiia had skated clean, she could have won or at least silver. And here, she and Daria practically had the same score from SP. After Daria made mistakes in FP, Maiia could have taken advantage of that chance, but she ended 4th :( I feel like another Russian junior may have taken advantages of both these opportunities to win or gain silver.

I sincerely hope that Maiia finds what is troubling her, whether it is mental or physical preparation.

But I'm happy for Daria getting silver and with a great score for her first international comp. She has a good chance at getting to the final :)

Daria should be in Zagreb (if no new changes occure), again against Haein Lee :)

Sad thing is that Daria's performance was great. I think that even with fall she would still lead if it weren't for the second mistake, because overally she was strong in everything.

Nearly the same can be said about Maiia, though she needed completely clean skate. Which didn't happen.

But remember that both girls are only 13 and their cometitors were a year and two years older with experience. And Daria and Maiia were better than Haein was last season - that's just a note for those who would like to offer another cathastrophic scenario

IMO Daria's expressiveness can give a good run for their money to a lot of skaters.

Yes I absolutely love Daria's skating! She is so expressive. I don't know any other 13 year old who can pull off Je Suis Malade. She has been given such mature music choices and she does great with them. I see a bright future for her. 194 at her first international is incredible. And that score if she skated clean? Definitely a few points over 200.

Daria is so incredibly mature in body movement and expression. Facially of course she could improve, but that's secondary at this point given how wonderfully gifted she is in movement. So musical and expressive!

Poor Maya, she must be feeling awful, but I think she showed more of a fight than she did at Courchevel when things started to go wrong. At the end of the day these girls are first-year juniors and they've always got next year to make the JGPF even if they falter now.
