2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

I could watch Alena Kostornaia do a program of nothing but crossovers. Her skating is so pure and beautiful. I hope she fights for her place this season.

well, the russian ladies are really bringing it, and the season hasn't even begun. Could this be the season with a russian podium at WC? I can honestly say there was something in each program that I really enjoyed.

If Alexandra skates clean her tech score will be huge. Her little brother must be proud. It is clear that Alina would change her layout a bit. Some people feel like Anna and Alena will fight for the third place in the team but I think there could be some big surprises: Anna is the russian champion en titre and Alena showed last year how to beat two ladies with quads :)

I don't want to sound harsh, I love Liza and her sass but she dissapoints me. I love that she did two 3As and her lutz is beautiful but I feel like she didn't progress at all in the last years in other departments. Trusova's spins actually improved a lot, Liza is losing points with those bad spin positions. Also, she’s on two feet for a good part of her programs. I just can’t seem to get into her programs since her Bolero and that arabian techno music. On top of it, her team should focus on optimizing her layout. She has 2 3A in FP but she is losing points all over the place, her choreo is basically just little jazzy hand movements. I'm just mad because I want her to be capable of more than this.

At this point I don't even wanna watch the other competitions, the only one I'm gonna look forward to is Russian Nationals. This field is so insane

I watched sashas free programm and I am sorry to say for me I do not see an ounce of daenerys in this programm, zero nada. For her to portray daenerys like she wishes to do it the complete wrong songs have been used. I feel nothing like really nothing (me personally I speak only for me,)when I watch her free skate. And I absolutely love daenerys. Yes she has 3 quads and her jumps are great but for me programm is not a portrayal of daenerys stormborn targaeryen. There are so many iconic daenerys themes they could have choose from and they did not include one of those, they choose the wrong music. Yes it's a game of thrones themed free skate but it isn't a daenerys themed skate, at least not for me

Yeah unfortunately it really looked like both her and Samodurova were affected. :ohwell:

I thought the same thing... I didn't feel like Sofia messed up her jumps in her short just because of some technical mistakes, she looked a little nervous to me before her short.
But Sofia also said that her current shape is 'the best she can do at the moment'. I guess puberty is hitting really hard, so she's losing her consistency.

I was really excited about Zhenya's music choices and I loved her short program but the free seemed kind of empty to me...

I realized this morning that with Shcherbakova going to Skate America that it means that Tara and Johnny will be commentating her FS when she does her dress change. Pretty sure those 2 will lose it (in a good way) with the dress change.

Maybe you should try watching again. At first I only watched in low quality and the lack of successful jumps made me feel like it was missing something, but the program has choreography throughout, between each jump. Not just that, but choreography that fits the music and is timed well with it, too. Give it another chance. Sure, it could use more polish and maybe more transitions as well, but "empty" it certainly is not.

OMG, these ladies are all so good, I'm shook (as the kids say.) Anna's ~costume change~ made me screech a little. So very Katniss Everdeen of her! And I like Alexandra's program, but was confused by the "dracarys" at the end. That was totally Arya music, and Alexandra is more of an Arya, anyway, the tiny little assassin. I love Alena's Twilight program. She clearly really enjoys it, and it's something different. Liza is killing it with the jumps, and I think it's a good choice to go with that "flapper girl" style music again. I've never much connected to Stanislava's skating, but I love the Moulin Rogue music on her. And on Sofia! Alina is KILLING it already. Zhenya seemed nervous, but I think her programs have a lot of potential for magic. They are all crazy talented. Excited for this season!

What Liza's program could've looked like with the Drumming Song :) enjoy :)

Somehow, with this energetic song, the program looks like it has more in it?
And the moments when she touches her head make more sense, coinciding in moments when she sings "there's drumming inside my head" or "you could hear it"

btw, I think there's nothing in this music that 'viewers wouldn't have been able to understand'. It fits perfectly to Liza's skating.
Mishin, why'd you change it! :dev2:

I suspect Johnny was at 2017 Worlds when Laurine Lecavalier did her costume change program in the Grease FS (Anna uses almost exactly the same movements to effectuate the change, I think there’s only so many ways to make the costume different:biggrin:).

But I couldn’t find any commentary from Tara and Johnny, so I don’t know. I suspect they will chuckle, as did their counterparts at NBCSN did when commenting on Laurine’s costume change, and Terry Gannon will point out where it’s been done before :)

Tara. That would be the "Tara" who talks at the wrong moments, has a proclivity for discussing other skaters during a skater's performance, and expressed a wish that Yulia would smile during her Schindler's List?

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll be standing by with my mute button.

In other words, you can just say you dont like her/with the costume change

In other words, you can just say you dont like her... or not comment on it at all...

What does my comment have to do with whether I like someone???

I’m sorry, this makes no sense to me. I honestly thought I would find Tara and Johnny commenting on Laurine’s ocstume change, so we would know how they would react. But I couldn’t. Knowing Terry, that’s how he’ll react.

If only...….I am so excited to see this program! I love Liza and I love the song so I hope she can pull it all together and make this her best SP ever.

I've already edited my comment tho, because it sounded too harsh and too personal at second reading... But the point is, those two costume changes are not the same, nor Anna was using exactly the same movements as Laurine. The only similarity is in the fact they are both the costume changes.

She really does have the best crossovers I've ever seen. Her speed across the ice is heavenly.

Now the surprise is spoiled, but what a fun surprise it was!

Well, I think we will need to agree to disagree. The mechanics of the costume change are precisely the same to my eye. And I guess I'm thinking of the comments, oh how different, how new, and I was like  Not to anyone who's seen Laurine.

Whether it is *new* is much different question than whether it is good, or whether someone likes the program.

And do Anna and Laurine have two entirely different programs? Yes.

The major standouts for me at test skates were Kostornaia and Trusova. Alena's combination of musicality, commitment, and raw skating skills is just phenomenal and sets her apart from almost every other senior woman. I hate Twilight but adore her free skate and have watched it...I think three times now?

I'm not won over by Sasha's FS program yet and actually prefer the short. The first part if her SP is a little off, yes, but the second half is the perfect fit and I could watch her totally commit to that step sequence all day. That being said, my taste level could certainly be off - I just posted in the Russian pairs thread that I really like Tarasova/Morozov's free skate. Regardless, she has those quads and I'm very excited to see if she can maintain her consistency.

Test skates are always way too early to use a predictor of the rest of the season, but making bold and foolish predictions is what we do here, so. I see the worlds team being Trusova, Kostornaia, and Zagitova at this point, but wouldn't be shocked to see Tuktamysheva sneak in there again.
