2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

A wonderful performance by Daria Usacheva today. I am not a connoisseur and I can’t judge PSC, but in my eyes she is very high as an artist, I watched her program in one breath from beginning to end, her skate is light and fast. Music and she today were as one. Jumping was also good. I am impressed with her very much.

Just to put this out here-In an interview, they asked Alysa Liu what is the most difficult part of figure skating/competing etc., and she said " not being able to eat what I want to. Being hungry all the time". (I'm paraphrasing). It is what it is in this sport. For many, it IS endless dieting. No different from ballet or gymnastics.

Alysa has posted pizza and ice cream on her story a lot though [emoji39]

Is anyone else bothered by Davydov's remarks? Vasilieva is struggling with her weight. Tarusina was tired of the endless dieting. What's going on in his camp??? I was bothered a few weeks ago in an interview where he said he demands total submission from his skaters. I'm not sure he's a coach I'd send my daughter to.

I'm sad to see Anna retiring so young, but the writing was on the wall as far as her competitive prospects. Sometimes it's just better to face reality and cut your losses.

How is Vasilieva struggling with her weight? She skated very strongly at her two JGP events

Nastya looked gorgeous and I can't wait to see it with the music. Probably some under-rotations, but at least she landed everything. That step sequence looked great and I like the song. I remain optimistic for her. Well kind of. She's fifth place for now, but only a couple points out of silver. And the girls above her are no easy rivals.

And as like everyone else, I prefer this music for Liza. I can see some actual choreography in there. Its so much better.
I'm glad you like the music and you remain optimistic on Anastasia. I do wish she kept the short program last year because the music was great and she did her best short program ever at the Russian Cup final when she scored well over 70 points for the first time ever and should have been higher than 3rd place. Nastya really could have perfected that jazzy short program this season and she didn't skate it enough last year for people to even be overexposed to it. I hope this short program works out for her because if she's ever going to move up the food chain with a Russian ladies she's going to have to do a lot better and have a short program pointwise much higher than in the mid-60s.

It has to be hard on Anastasia because she started the season with inflammation for the second year in a row and had a new coaching situation for the second year in a row. It's a hard situation for her but I hope she makes the best of it.

I don't know how many times Liza has hit 80 points in her short program but obviously she had an outstanding skate. She keeps getting better in her early twenties and should be an inspiration for everyone. Seeing some 16 and 17 year old Russian girls retire as unfortunate. we should all be happy Liza has stuck it out and is having a great second act to her career. It will be fascinating to see her compete against 4A this season.

I would doubt very much that Alysa Liu said “being hungry all the time” was the most difficult part of figure skating.
Could you please provide a link to this interview? That seems too important to “paraphrase”.

Sometimes (I’m not saying this happened here, that’s why I would like a link so I would know) journalists or translators make leaps to support their own presuppositions.
Do skaters eat healthy diets? For sure:thumbsup: Do they avoid foods like pizza except on “cheat days”? Every interview I’ve read with a skater says yes. Do they miss pizza. You bet:cool:

Is that “hungry all the time”? No. No skater, Russian, American, from *anywhere*, should ever, ever, ever, be hungry all the time, that is not part of this sport, and should never ever be tolerated. At all. Ever.:(

I'll have to see this program with the music to decide for sure, but I did kind of wish she kept her one from last year too. I already like the new one, but the last one was one of my favorites of all time. And she didn't really get to have a proper moment with it. Of course, its so hard in Russia these days. Its heart breaking, but I still think there's hope for at least getting a CS and doing well. Getting a GP spot for next year is going to be difficult though, especially if she only goes to one CS. Even getting on the SB list will be difficult, and this past year that wasn't even enough. But hopefully we can see her beautiful routines at Nationals this year at least. But I just really want to see her at a GP event, she deserves to be seen by an international audience larger than just a CS.

Simone Biles does the same, all the time. I've noticed that many of the US gymnasts do this. When you are deprived of something, it makes you want it all the more I think.

I'm sure most figure skaters and gymnasts and ballerinas who have to stay as slim as possible are hungry a lot of the time. Alysa is so tiny at about 4 feet 8 inches tall and 75 pounds that she makes AlenaK1 look like an amazon. ;) There is a steep price to pay in the sports for the boys and girls and they pay those prices. They are so much stronger and tougher than I ever have been. but I wish there was more their sports could do for them to be healthier and stronger.

She's never had a proper moment with her jazzy short program from last year Take Five. and she never even had a proper moment with her wonderful Romeo and Juliet free skate from two or three years ago which was the best Romeo and Juliet I've seen since Sasha Cohen skated Romeo and Juliet so well. The reality is Anastasia can never have real moments unless she climbs the Russian ranks and you can't really climb the ranks if you get one or two challengers a year and the Russian Cup. Her opportunities are limited. Sad. but we should all still enjoy her beautiful skating wonderful artistry and innate musicality.

Only if she ever received the opportunities Stasya has.

100%. obviously i can't speak for every athlete, but i had huge problems with this when i skated which led to much bigger issues that i am now still dealing with even 10 years after quitting. there is a delicate balance with food when you are an athlete, and it's even trickier if you're someone who has an unhealthy relationship with food. but of course, these girls burn thousands of calories a day training and can afford to have some treats here and there.

Truth. I want to see that interview, too. That statement would have caused total uproar in America if it were true. Which leads me to believe it never happened.

Anyway, figure skaters are athletes and they need to eat very healthy. They should never be hungry or be told that feeling hungry all the time is normal.
Anyone advocating that, is advocating for anerexia.

Alysa is tiny but she looks very strong. I think she eats!

No, not a translation, as I recall it was an American interview, but I can't for the life of me remember who it was-it was this year though, and recently. I think it was after Lake Placid, and possibly it was the Today Show or GMA or something. (It was not the Ted Barton interview). It is at the end of the interview. (last question). And no, the way she said it should not have offended anyone, she was being cute-lighthearted. As I recall they were just asking her the usual things, why do you love skating, competing blah blah blah. It was a puff piece. And I don't think she literally meant she was hungry all the time...sheesh. Just that she has to watch what she eats, and some things she cannot eat. I'll wade through her fan page, I'm sure someone posted the link. (My best guess is NBC/Today show as NBC owns the rights to figure skating in the US)

Why would tho? Because someone is feeling hungry? Feeling hungry has nothing to do with being hungry. After all, that felling is not unusual felling for puberty. Even for adults too. Do you eat everytime when you are feeling hungry? And i must say that statement about the statement look to me as a cheap food comercial, i mean, do you all work in some food company

For a native English speaker “being hungry all the time” sets off red flags. It means you have real feelings of real hunger *all* the time.

That is not “feeling” hungry. “Being” hungry, in English, is much much much different than “feeling” hungry. Being hungry is not missing pizza. Being hungry is not, wow, I wish I had some chocolate now. It is *being* hungry.

I repeat what I said earlier, no athlete, anywhere, should “be” hungry “all the time”.

Sorry for the double post, did not see this until I posted earlier.

Thank you for responding, now I am much more relieved. It sounds as though all she said was something to the effect that that she follows a healthy athletes diet and she misses <insert favorite treat food here>.

For me, that is very different from being hungry all the time, which no one should be, and particularly not a young, growing athlete. That was my only point :)
