Maybe the best for Elizabet is to take it slow and heal. Hopefully we will see her at Worlds.

I am with Liam on this one. It was indeed a choice, by RusFed. And they made the wrong choice imo. This is what they had in last year's SB list. Top 24 qualifies, there are 4 ladies, 4 GP spots availaible. Additionally, Sotskova who was only 43rd also qualifies through WS list. RusFed needed to make cuts.
18. Sakhanovich 202.62 - Got one spot instead of two.
20. Tarusina 198.76 - Got nothing. Kept in Juniors.
21. Gubanova 198.65 - Got nothing.
23. Konstantinova 197.57 - Got 2 spots due to being Top 24 in the WS list.
---------------------------
43. Sotskova 179.72 - Got 1 spot due to being Top 24 in the WS list.
Now, the WS list is using the last three years result. It is designed so that if a skater takes a sabbatical or is injured one year, they would not completely fall out of the ranks. This is good, and works well for all Federations - except for Russian Ladies where the depth is insanely high. Instead, this system keeps old merits high in the rankings, and new merits are blocked out.
Sotskova didn't take a sabbatical last year, she wasn't injured. In fact, she competed a lot but the results were mediocre with Russian standards. Maria's latest "good" results were at the Olympics and Worlds 18 months ago where she scored 198 and 196 poínts respectively. So Maria didn't earn anything last season, she got 1 GP spot due to 18 months old results. Maria also explained the bad results from last season with focusing more on University.
So now she got one spot at GP France + a free ticket to RusNats where others need to qualify. I suspect Maria will struggle to make the top 10 in France and she will probably fight for the last places at Nationals.
On the other hand:
Sakhanovich - If she medals at SC she doesn't have the chance to follow that up to Q for GPF.
Tarusina - Injury stopped her this season, and she resigned. But who knows how her motivation had been given a GP spot, maybe she would have reconsidered and continued skating.
Gubanova - Would certainly have been a podium threat at GP France if she was given the chance.
Maybe Maria is innocent in all this, but RusFed certainly are not.
But that's my point. The others earned their GP spots too but didn't get them. Why did RusFed choose Maria over them? It was very clear last season that Maria was the lowest scoring of all the candidates for GP spots, and there has not been any indication or sign that Maria would score better this season. I am OK with Maria competeting at this Denis Ten Memorial and other lower competitions. But sending her to important competitions like Challengers, GP and RusNats when there are a dozen of others with better potential waiting in the wings, that is just unfair imo. The only thing I see is lost opportunities for the others who also earned their GP spots but didn't get any. Bad decision by RusFed imo.
Maria was guaranteed to get the spot due to her WS. This is per the ISU rules. It doesn't matter that it was a result of 3 previous seasons. That's the rules. Had the others done what she had done, they'd get the spot over her. As per the rules they're competing under. RusFed didn't make these rules, the ISU did. And these rules to qualify for GPs, are the same rules all skaters compete under regardless of nationality.
Yes I know the rules. Gubanova and Tarusina were guaranteed a GP spot as well due to their SB. This is also per ISU rules. There is nothing in the rules that says that WS trumphs SB. They were all guaranteed spots, but too many ladies resulted in RusFed needed to step in and cut someone despite the rules. I am not saying the rules are wrong - they are what they are. What was wrong was RusFeds decision in who to cut. That I disagree with.

Sorry to say but you're the one with the problem if you simply don't like the fact Maria has that spot.
Gubanova isn't exactly doing much better and Tarusina has been forced to retire, because of injury.
So what is it you expect Rusfed to do, pull Maria off the GP just because you don't like it? Who would you send in her place?

Can some russian confirm this is real? https://www.instagram.com/p/B3aEyd-pZBC/
If so, russia reached a complete new level in figure skating!![]()
And soon they will be marching all over the world, together with other young Russian skaters, taking all the pedestals...
Agreed. But sticking up for Nastya at this point is like spitting into the wind.Yes I know the rules. Gubanova and Tarusina were guaranteed a GP spot as well due to their SB. I wish she kept her short program from last season she could have really perfected it this season. But this years short program should turn out fine.Well, Tarusina has retired and Gubanova is not at her best either. (loved her SP last year). So, in the end I am not sure the Russian federation made the wrong decision.
Actually Nsstya performed considerably better than Maria last season. Her quality of skating was much better too. But that was then this is now and Maria has been through so much and I want to see her do better and be happy. Her confidence is shot right now in my opinion and I don't know how she can get her confidence back. It's also very hard for I figure skater as tall as Masha who is 5 ft 8 in tall to do all the moves required in ladies figure skating today and that are done by skaters five six seven eight nine 10 11 inches shorter than she is. We have to be honest the competition in Russian ladies figure skating is so brutal I've never seen anything like this before in any one discipline in this sport.Sorry to say but you're the one with the problem if you simply don't like the fact Maria has that spot.

Get well soon, Elizabet! how unfortunate she has to miss gpDarya did well at the Denis Ten Memorial Challenger. Darya earned 136 points in the Free skate and placed 1st. Maiia had a fall and a step out and earned 125.69 points and placed 2nd overall.

Sakhanovich or Gubanova at least if they take her spot wouldn't score 46 SP and 90+ in FS
Sotskova made the Olympics and wont be making ever again, its time hang up the skates on move on with her studies FULL Time.
The 3rd skater Gap in russian ladies is over, The Med skater gap is over too...
her skating skills has totally regressed and seems to gotten even taller, very difficult for a skater like her to be competitive, do you honestly think she will still be competitive ?
she is at the bottom of the barrell.
Poor baby Maya, still struggling to skate clean. Congratulations to Daria, 2 massive scores to go in her SB, well deserved!![]()
There really isn't any need to be so cruel, calling some the bottom of the barrel.
I'm sure Maria knows she won't be competitive internationally or even within Russia anymore but so what?
Maybe every single skater who isn't likely to make their national team should just retire, I mean why bother skating just for the love of the sport? (That was sarcasm btw)
Maria has said she wants to continue skating, that she loves to skate and compete and if she's happy simply to do that than what does it matter that she isn't as successful anymore?
I really wish people would stop complaining that certain skaters should retire. They skate because they want to, and will quit when they want to, not when whining fans tell them they should.
well Fumie Suguri skated for long time even Leonova has tried stay on. Im just saying if Maria knows she wont be competitive she should have just asked the Fed to withdraw her, she can skate dpomestically all she wants.
