2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Except the individual achievement of Liza, here I think it's important that Mishin showed that in his team girls can do quads too. He has a couple of years more of training and this way may attract some talented girls of a younger age to move to S.Petersburg. Learn the quads and reach the higher ranks from there.

I don't think that having a 'granny' skater who landed a quad in training has such a pull on young skaters. The young girls that scream the loudest at any domestic figure skating event want to jump like Sasha, have a 'transformer' dress like Anna or perhaps even skating skills like Alyona. These young seniors inspire the new generation.

#TeamMishin only made a statement to show they still have some relevance against the domination of the Moscow rinks. Nevertheless, it is quite an achievement for Tuktamysheva, so I hope she makes good use of her new jump.

Alyona’s 3A was a complete surprise. She did land it couple years ago but she stopped training it. Then between Russian test skates and Finlandia no news, no rumours, no videos, no instagram posts landing the 3A. And then Finlandia happens and during the practice bam she lands a 3A. On top of that, she already has it included in her free skate two times! Like what an amazing reveal!

But are we just going to believe that Sasha was lying about not having landed a 3A yet in her Skate Canada interview? And that Alyona was lying in her interviews about when she landed the 3A again? Because the rumors came in the summer, before either of them had supposedly landed the 3A.

Don't get me wrong, I really want to believe the rumors were true. Especially because one of those rumors was about Alina landing a 4Lz. And it is almost eery that the two quad combos, Alena with 3As, and Sasha with 3As have all come true. But I just can't see a reason why Alyona/Sasha would lie. If Sasha had in fact landed a 3A at that point, why wouldn't she just say something vague like "I'm still working on the 3A, its a work in progress" instead of "I haven't landed a clean 3A yet". Same thing with Alyona, why would she outright say that she hadn't landed a 3A until after test skates? I understand why they would wait until a strategic time to release the videos, but I don't understand why they would lie in interviews after the fact. But I'm definitely curious if anyone has a potential reason for that.

I don't know why, but I thought that Alyona landing 3A for 2 weeks and being THAT consistent with it to put it 2 times in her program was a little unrealistic.
But since she said so, I just rolled with it. Although, I mean, it was a little bit suspicious sounding from the beginning.
I also thought that the rumor breaker could've just gotten lucky initially.

Who knows, team Tutberidze can play their games very well.
When Elizabet landed 3A like a week after worlds, I already thought their posting was a bit off. It takes more time to learn a jump, especially if they had to prepare a clean performance for worlds with a program with a quad, they probably did not have time to train 3A. So 3a must've been landed way before worlds. :scratch2:

I've only just seen Liza's quad!

Wow!

She is not giving up is she, that jump is beautiful!

And here we have a skater who is not a young teenager and actually has a womanly figure learn and land a quad...hopefully people will stop complaining it is only "little stick thin girls" who can master them
And I'm so happy it is her!

Landing a quadruple jump in an actual competition would clearly make more of an impact than a video from a practice shot.

Having said that, achieving such an action at an older age can absolutely have a tremendous impact, not only on young junior athletes coming up but on those already at the top. I would say that Butyrskaya's gold medal at Worlds had a larger impact upon the skating world during her time than many of the other titles achieved. Because of it, athletes like Michelle Kwan knew that staying in the sport and winning were possible. The clearest example of this, to me, is Boginskaya in gymnastics. In 1992, so many people thought she was the exception. Perhaps the last vestige of the past. By 1996, not only was she still competing but it was clear that she had had a more immediate & powerful impact upon the field than plausibly the entire podium at the 92 Olympics. Because the athletes had stayed in. So many of the high-profile 15 year olds in '92 stayed in and were still competing at 19. Still medaling. And today, the ladies stay in even longer. She did that. She inspired an entire field. If Liza can do this now, it could very well not only inspire upcoming athletes but encourage the same athletes that are currently at the top to stick through the tough growing years ahead.

I very much hope that if Liza can pull off her quad in competition that it will be very encouraging to others.
That "an old dog can learn new tricks" as the English saying goes

Does anybody know what kind of specialised medical treatment is available in Arkhangelsk to young professional athletes?
Alyona Kanysheva said in her IG Story she is in Arkhangelsk for treatment: https://www.sports.ru/figure-skating/1080604916.html

I have searched the web for specialised clinics etc., since Arkhangelsk is seat of the Northern Medical University, there might be some specialisms there that aren't available in Moscow?

This is just my opinion and pure speculation but I wouldn’t exactly call their statements “lies” but maybe more of “half truths”. You need a certain % or successful attempts to own a jump, and an even higher % to land it consistently in competition. Maybe they don’t consider having a 3A until they are landing more than 50% of attempts? Or more than 80%? In Aliona’s 1tv interview that was filmed over the summer, she said her goal for the season was to land a 3A in competition. Why did she state this was her goal if she had no intention of training it? The video wasn’t released until after she did it.

I can believe Aliona’s 3A wasn’t working out consistently in her programs until 2 weeks before Finlandia. It explains why she didn’t do it at test skates. But her not wanting to try it again until after test skates? I find it hard to believe. I do think she was telling the truth that she was scared to try it again due to injury, I just think the timeline has been altered a bit.

Are there any videos of Alina or Evgenia landing practice quads (or 3A) without a harness? I remember seeing Alina doing a 4F in a harness before.

:otopic:

You are not a young russian girl on any domestic competition, you don't know what they want.

And please refrain from calling a young 22 year old woman a "granny".

Getting back on topic, Liza's 4T was simply stunning, such a beautiful technique, people may say what they want about her lack of transitions and basic SS, but she is with not doubt the russian lady skater with the best technique in the current field.

Not that I know of. Apparently Evgenia tried 4S at a show in Japan over the summer but there’s no video because of broadcasting restrictions/no fan cams allowed, and none were successful.

I read she fell in one and the other had a step out. But I think maybe now that Liza has gotten her 4T Zhenya might be more inspired to try her 4s, who knows.

Didn't Trusova literally say that she hadn't landed the jump clean though? She didn't say tat she didn't have it, but that she literally hadn't landed it yet. My point is that she could have been vague about it but she wasn't, which leads me to believe she really didn't land a clean one yet. But I agree that Maybe Alyona could've landed one before.

I'm happy for Liza.. she just proved that we the right technic .. a woman with a woman body can jump everything ... Go Liza:cheer:

Now ... I just think what more surprises will have until the nationals... because with a 3A and a 4 .. Liza just become a strong contender even with lower PCS

I don’t remember her outright denying she landed it but I also don’t speak Russian so the translation might be off. I remember her saying it was harder than quads for her and specifically talking about step outs. But I don’t remember her explicitly confirming or denying if she had ever landed a 3A. To me, she left it a little open to interpretation. But again, this may be the translation.

Plus the main evidence - her parents promised her a poodle for winning JWC again and landing 3A. She showed off the poodle at Rostelecom 😂.

I'm wondering if we'll see Liza's 4T this season. We can't be sure how consistent she is with it, although the one in the video looks solid. With the 3A, it also came shortly after she posted videos of it, but she had been doing those since her early teens in practice.
