2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Kostornaya a 4s?
Does anybody else feel like Aliona should not try to strain her body and disrupt her consistency with quads and instead keep polishing what she has and, as bad as it sounds, just wait for Anna and Sasha to grow a bit more and become (more) inconsistent?
Same goes for Anna, does everybody like the idea of her learning more quads (4F etc) ?
I get that they are being pushed by the coaching team and their own minds, but I think every skaters goal are the Olympics, which are in 2 years. Maybe they should think more strategically

Anna landed a 4F today were you not watching? She is also very consistent this season with her 4Lz

I don't say it was xenofobic, after all I'm not a man of PC times. I care only whether something is polite or not, vulgar or not, reasonable or not. And the claim wasn't polite, it was unreasonably vulgar, therefore stupid.

Something being impolite isn't vulgar though. It sounds quite PC to suggest that. What is unreasonably vulgar is the accusation of saying someone is xenophobic which is what the other poster did. I wouldn't want to defend said poster myself. But whatever you fancy I guess. :)

This entire thread is a constant loop of bullying, so not sure why you suddenly are sensitive to that now.

I am not the first nor last person to say Trusova is all jumps and her skating without it isn't anything to write about, as evidenced clearly today. I would hardly call that bullying.

That is your opinion. The mistakes certainly did not help and of course performance suffered...that happens with anyone. It would have happened if Anna or Alyona had skated the same way.

I am sensitive to bullying of ANY skater and do not condone it no matter what.

Two wrongs do not make a right and just because bullying goes on it doesn't mean it is okay to join in and add to it.

I did not say Anna didn't land a 4F today or didn't skate brilliantly.
I said that I wonder if it's the right long term strategy for Aliona to push her body for a quad at 16yo when she is a strong gold medal contender now, with her consistency, 3A and PCS. Same for Anna, push for more and more quads with high risk of physical injury and inconsistency, or try to maintain what she has while transitioning from a child's to an adolescent's body in the next 2 seasons and improve her PCS?
It was just a thought.

Does anyone know how stasya, Nugumanova Sofia and Gubsnova did today? Guliakova from what I understand had a great event and finish fifth.

honest to God I think there's so much pressure on these young ladies I don't know how in the world they can handle it. To know that Sasha was crying at the end of her free skate is disappointing. So much weight on her tiny shoulders for being the Supergirl in figure skating. I hope she can handle it and I do want her to cut back a little bit take one or two quads out of her free skate.

The main thing is to stay healthy but they do have Valieva and Liu to contend with in Olympics year and those two are likely to have multiple quads in that season.

Guliakova was 7th with 196.99, Konstantinova was 13th with 180.34, Nugumanova was 14th with 174.66, Samodurova was 9th with 192.08, and Gubanova was 10th with 190.06.

Kostornaia is very watchable even without jumps.

She is, but falling and popping her first 3 jumping passes would be a different matter.

Sasha has improved in other areas, as shown by her SP yesterday...unfortunately the FS was a tough one and a case of gritting her teeth and standing up on the rest of her jumps to save the Bronze.

My sincere hope is that these top 3 Russian ladies are skating for the love of the sport and are caring for their young, developing bodies. Alena is my favorite because she has superb technical skills and tremendous artistry. Anna had an outstanding Free Skate and deserves the gold. I just hope the strain of multiple quads will not put too much stress on her fragile body. Alexandra is the quad-queen but when they fail so does her moment. I would love to see Alexandra put as much energy into developing her artistry. These 3 are amazing young women

We're not them and we're not their coaches or parents.

We have no say in what they do

What a great competition for Anya once again national champ! And well deserved!

Aliona was visibly nervous but did well to hold it together, I’m sure she’s kicking herself over the 3F combo and 2A - her best jumps. But the 3As were better than ever.

I was shocked by Sasha’s performance, especially after her perfectly clean runthru this morning. But she’s a fighter and will come back stronger at her next event. Heart breaking.

Sasha had quite a lucky escape because Zhenya and Alina could both reasonably have scored 230 if they competed without injury/equipment issues. This type of performance is so uncharacteristic I hope it's just a blip.

Trusova today is prime example of what happens when you have nothing but jumps and those fail you.

Yes and no. But mostly no.

What happens when her jumps fail is third place in a ridiculously deep field. What happens to Tuktamyshieva or Samodurova or Konstantinova when jumps fail them? It's hard to medal at a figure skating event when your jumps fail you regardless of your content (except in ice dance ).

Sure, she's disappointed, and rightfully so, as she's capable of better. But she's human and entitled to have bad days. It happens to everyone. Nathan, Yuzuru, Patrick, Evgenia, Alina, Julia, ...

Yes, all those quads is risky, but that's sport. Taking risks gives you a chance to accomplish amazing things. I admire her courage, her guts, her strength, her athleticism.

All three of those girls - and many others - are all phenomenal. And shout out to Tuk - so much respect for her.

It‘s better than discussing (and shaming) the personalities of teenagers. To my mind asking “Is it good/reasonable/clever to have young athletes train more and more quads at the risk of their health two years ahead of the biggest tournament of their lives“ is better and more constructive than “why did teenage girl XY not react appropriately after having lost a major competition she had worked for day in day out?“

Uh yes...obviously? But this is a thread to discuss Russian Ladies figure skating, I discussed a thought

They know the situation that's all I'm saying.
There is a lot we do not see or know.
I don't think Eteri is some evil witch who sacrifices the health of her skaters forcing them to do quads, I think they are ambitious young girls who want to win and push themselves and each other to achieve their goals.
And I think they know the risks.

Anna is not as fragile as she looks, she is obviously quite strong and Sasha is all muscle, in exactly the kind of athletic shape to handle those jumps.
Alyona takes things a bit slower and is a bit more focused on perfecting her existing content first.

True

Oh puh-lease. "Grit" and "courage" and "character" are filler words people throw around when there's nothing else one can say about a meltdown skate.

There is something else to say. She earned 226 points after all. Check the recent WC results.

Skaters of the world would join the queue for such a "meltdown skate" with the tech score 82+
