It took only one infected person (Patient 1) attending an event with hundreds of people in West Germany to spread it over to 500 people in that area in a span of a week, the whole town had to be put into quarantine and still it spread everywhere over the state because the people visiting the event came from all over the country. In the US over 30 healthy people got infected all at once because they visited the same convention and were in close proximity. Elderly and sick people are most vulnerable to the virus and have life threatening symptoms, however, even young people have died and have shown severe symptoms and hospitals do not have the capacity to treat thousands of people with life threatening symptoms all at once as Coronavirus spreads extremly fast. Health care systems are on the brink of collapse because they cannot treat so many people at once and in Italy they already have to make the decision whose life to save whose life they do not safe, because they do not have enough ventilators and other machines to treat every person that needs intensive care.
Holding an event with thousands of people at close proximity is careless and puts many people's life at risk. It is easy to be so ignorant and dismissive if you do not live in an area that has been extremly affected by the virus.
I bet you didn't read. I meet thousands of people every day anyway without attending any sporting event and whether there will be an event like figure skating championships or not won't put any more or less risk on me or on anyone of those thousands of people, because they still meet each other on everyday basis and anyone of them can be infected and not just by COVID-19. Either you will separate all mankind into their small private cells or you have just to put some risk to live.
(don't be alarmed, I was in private quarantine
